Javi

I can understand those of you missing the shows of the 80's, but I think Prince still can offer amazing shows. Actually, he's one of the best live acts of the moment. His shows are different from the ones he made in the past, but really enjoyable too.

At this point is where my pow differs from Alexnvrmnd777's: I don't give a fuck for 'a show', I mean the visual side of it. It's ALL about the music for me as well.

Over time, there have been countless threads both here and at HQ about Prince's dancing and the fucking splits. I always said that if I want to see monkeys jumping, I'd go to the circus, to the zoo or to the jungle, and that when it comes to a Prince concert ALL I care about is the music.

The only 'problem' now is that what he's playing and how he's playing it bores me TO DEATH.

That new arrangement in LRC that everybody raves about sounds HORRIBLE to me, I can't stand it. When I lay my hands on U was never a favourite of mine but on top of that he absolutely destroyed it to my taste in recent performances.

I don't want to see him dancing or going through anybody's legs or running along catwalks or masturbating the guitar. I want him to play. But I don't like how he does it nowadays, that's all.

And that's why I'm by no means eager to get this today, tomorrow or in 6 months' time. I WON'T WATCH IT. I'll just archive it for completeness's sake.

There's an edgy side to it that's been missing for a lot of years.

The cover photos for this release are not very good at all--Prince looks like a Bowie-like alien from another era... lol I think his look for W2A is much better. wink

Well, I agree with this point as well. I probably wouldn't even notice the lack of show aspect if the music was fantastic or had an edge. But because the music is Vegas-like with no real soul, it helps to bring EVERYTHING down.

So, yeah I hear you, and I concur with this point as well.

Yeah, why don't we have him sit on a stool and play guitar (or even just sing) for 2 hours?? That's "mature" like according to your logic, isn't it? In case you or anyone else forgot, he is a part of SHOW business. He's so worried about the business part of it, that he forgets there's also a "show" side as well.

No one mentioned that he HAD to go through Cat's legs again or whatever, but let me ask you this. If he performed this way for his entire career run, would you be as in awe of him in a live setting as you are now (since we've all seen the type of legendary shows he's put forth)? Hell, he would never have gotten is golden rep for giving the best performances if he did. It's because he had EVERYTHING in his shows. He had the great musicianship that you were talking about, but he ALSO had something to see and play off of for the crowd. He truly gave you a SHOW. Now, he mainly only gives you the music, which is HALF of what you used to get, and y'all are licking his 'nads too much to even see it. But hey. whatever. biggrin

So what the hell shall he do? You know you're talking about MANY years ago? I really like to know what your idea of a perfect SHOW by Prince would be nowadays. Remember he's 53, not a 25-year old guy at start of his career wearing stockings and pretending to have his hohner ejaculate. No one disrespects the old material, no one would, we would not be here, but the main problem is you and I have complete different ideas of what music is. Another difference is that you like a SHOW, possibly including dancing, splits, acting and in the end, good music, I like a concert and I love to see musicians play instruments, be it a guitar (my favourite), bass or drums or whatever, so I guess I'm lucky enough lately. If we were to witness other artists live, I guess you could go see Lady Gaga, I'd rather go see Santana, or Jimi Hendrix, if that was possible. But hey, how boring am I or would they be, they would just be musicians play guitar all the time biggrin

You guys apparently only see black or white, so there's really no point in conversing with you types. No one said anything about splits or jumping off of pianos or whatever else has been brought up! But he could be doing MORE but just standing there looking bored!! Hell, the band could also do a little choreography in unison as well. And, I'm talking about just little shit. Ya can't use the "too old" excuse for them, now can you? And you mention you wanna see musicians play guitar, bass, drums, etc... What in the hell do you think was going on back in the day?? Hell, Prince was seen on the drums MORE back then than he has in the past 10 years or so. He WAS playing and doing ALL of those things you say you love to see. It was just there was something in is presentation where every aspect of a concert was hitting on all cylinders.

And if you're comparing a Lady Gaga performance with a Prince performance from back in the day, you're more deluded than I thought.

But as I mentioned in my reply to Vitriol's comment, his music basically mirrors his shows. It's BORING. Okay, you got him to exclusively concentrate on playing an instament. Well, what he's spewing out is dullsville. It does all start with the music, and maybe that's why the entire thing falls apart for me.

It's funny that the people complaining didn't complain about the right thing, the Setlists. They complained about the facial expressions, the lack of movements and all they could think of but no mention at all of prince performing the same songs twice on the same night, it would've been much better if he did 2 different setlists. Also a lot of the songs he performed aren't really songs i'd like to hear him do live if i ever saw him in concert. So the setlists are my main gripe with the concerts but all and all i still find them enjoyable and as i said in a previous post there won't be any recent pro shot concerts of his released any time soon. This is the best release you'll get in years in terms of prince dvds so might as well enjoy it or archieve it like vitriol aka mr archive biggrin

well everyone is entitled to their opinion vitriol...(although i think your not 100 per cent serious half the time) but i cant agree with you on his live performances in recent years...to me...in general...since the turn of the century...prince has been on fire as a live act...his recorded work in recent years isnt up to his 80s work but..live...he has taken it to another level...

.

i saw the lovesexy tour in 1988...and..while it was brilliant..it was high energy...more of a 'show' than about the music....but it doesnt compare...to me..to his 2002 one nite alone tour.. which concentrated more on his music and vast back catalogue...and it blew me away...

.

look at his recent tv appearances ...superbowl half time show...'fury' live on snl...rock n roll hall of fame performance...they are...imo...better performances than anything he did in the 80s or the 90s....he is a far better musician and live act than he was in the 80s...

.

maybe you have just been a fan too long and you want him to surprise you ...but...come on...the guy is only human...put on the montreux show on dvd when you get it (and..no..i dont have it yet)...sit back..put your feet with a wee whiskey and enjoy the show for what it is..... wink

.

just to add to this...i saw him at hop farm in july and..believe me...that show was not a guy going through the motions.....it was a festival show with lots of casual or non fans there and he made a lot of new fans that day....he was brilliant...he could have played without much effort but he gave it his all....people were in tears during 'purple rain' ...and these were not hardcore fans....i dont think he could do anymore than he does....

i know he can be a dick but..sometimes...his fans are soo critical its almost unbelievable...i will always defend his live performances...because their is no one better...

look at his recent tv appearances ...superbowl half time show...'fury' live on snl...rock n roll hall of fame performance...they are...imo...better performances than anything he did in the 80s or the 90s....he is a far better musician and live act than he was in the 80s...

.

maybe you have just been a fan too long and you want him to surprise you ...but...come on...the guy is only human...put on the montreux show on dvd when you get it (and..no..i dont have it yet)...sit back..put your feet with a wee whiskey and enjoy the show for what it is..... wink

.

just to add to this...i saw him at hop farm in july and..believe me...that show was not a guy going through the motions.....it was a festival show with lots of casual or non fans there and he made a lot of new fans that day....he was brilliant...he could have played without much effort but he gave it his all....people were in tears during 'purple rain' ...and these were not hardcore fans....i dont think he could do anymore than he does....

i know he can be a dick but..sometimes...his fans are soo critical its almost unbelievable...i will always defend his live performances...because their is no one better...

I agree Blackbob, I saw him at Malahide and was completely blown away. I've been to hundreds of gigs and this was by far the best I've ever been to, only Bowie comes close. My girlfriend was at the gig, I actually had to carry her there kicking and screaming, as she hates me playing his music all the time and although she hasn't been converted to a full blown fan, she was completely blown away by his performance. She just couldn't keep her eyes off him and actually got emotional a few times! She also has been to many gigs and she even rated it as one of the best she's been to.

There's an edgy side to it that's been missing for a lot of years.

well everyone is entitled to their opinion vitriol...(although i think your not 100 per cent serious half the time) but i cant agree with you on his live performances in recent years...to me...in general...since the turn of the century...prince has been on fire as a live act...his recorded work in recent years isnt up to his 80s work but..live...he has taken it to another level...

AMEN to that!

The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Remember there is only one destination and that place is U
All of it. Everything. Is U.

I know--I was merely trying to steer the thread back to something resembling the original topic. wink
