first listen...i was on the fence, although I am always grateful for a new P song. The next 10 listens, I really wasn't sure. I stepped away from it...didn't listen to it for a few days. Then the song was creeping up in my head. I was waking up in the morning with song in my head. So I listened to it again...now I can't get enough of it. It is a simple song, a refreshing song, and a happy song. He's talkin' about how as long as we're his friends, everything else is good.

It's catchy but nothing groundbreaking. I wonder if he pulled this from the vaults. Sounds like an old cut.

Im amazed at how so many in here are acting like its the end of the world because they don't like this song. It's not like it's an album, its one friggin song for God's sake! I'm not feeling it that much either but damn, I'm not losing faith in Prince (I don't have faith in man, let alone Prince). From what I see, the song's not going to be on the new CD so that should put a smile on your face if you hate this song. Y'all need to step back and chill for moment.

The song is not as bad as everyone is saying it is. It's not horrible at all, though it could've been better.

Not in the album = a good thing. Looks like it was a track to build up anticipation for the album and concerts.

I love this song! Hot Summer is fun and joyous in sound. To me it's a great Prince pop gem!

i don't know why i still subscribe to "rolling stone", but this "summer double issue" with the repulsive lady gaga cover has a blurb on "hot summer" (page 102 "Top Singles" if you're counting):

I can TOTALLY see an ad on TV for Splish-Splash or Hurricane Harbor (local waterparks) with "Hot Summer" playing in the background!

I agreed with the lacklustre assessments but after a break of a few days, listened again and found it quite cool and VERY catchy (can't get it outta my head).

I'd compare it with things like cybersingle or interactive and I think it holds up well there. It also remind me a bit of Get Your Groove On, Jam o The Year or Life Of the Party, in the simple melody, crappy kitsch lyrics, feel good department and I actually prefer it to all of those...
