Is that Janelle MonĂ¡e? It sure does sound like her.

The lead female vocalist doesn't sound like Janelle Monae to me--this woman's voice sounds much huskier... hmmm

I'd like to know if it's Bria Valente? Sounds like her singing in a voice we've never heard. Could it be?

There's something reassuring about you guys. Five, ten, twenty or even thirty years from now, I fully expect to be find you somewhere, still at it.

My faith in the human spirit is replenished.

As for the new song, it's deliberately uncomplicated and retro, like Chelsea Rogers and Guitar. It's his idea of a catchy upbeat tune, but he's making music for his own personal radio with not a care in the world for what radio stations actually play. His efforts at being somewhat radio-friendly and current were sometimes interesting but more often forgettable, and he has mostly been presenting himself as a keeper of several black music traditions. The fact these traditions are considered old-fashioned doesn't faze him, it's what he enjoys performing, sometimes self-indulgently. Too bad he has such a elder stateman aura, as I'd love to see him do some Gaga-ish tracks.

Your reasoning is borderline Spinal-Tap/Mighty Wind. As Ed Lover might say "C'Mon Son" It's okay to be contrarian, but when you typed this, did you have a voice in the back of your head saying "What if the song was deliberately crap? That would be disingenuous"

Would you like this song or even give it a passing glance if it was sung by:

Jonas Brothers

Taylor Swift

NickelBack

Miley Cyrus

Avril Lavigne

Pink

Justin Beiber

Adam Lambert

John Mayer

Coldplay

Maroon 5

Would you say it was "uncomplicated and retro" if it was any other artist? If you answer honestly, I believe you would say "I really wouldn't care & I'd probably call it filler and uninspired" Which brings me to the point that alot of people are making on this thread. Why apologise or back pedal for something obviously crafted to be subpar/mediocre/phoned in and painfully dull because it's penned by a musical icon from Minneapolis? Orgers need to stop giving Prince a hall pass. For god sakes be honest with yourself, people. "Hey, this sounds like Prince is deliberately releasing dull coasters. Why should he get attention for that when any musician studio rat makes a dime a dozen of these tracks all across the world every day? Hey,wait a minute! Prince is just attention whoring with his music over nothing! " lol

Sorrry, but that has far more of a ring of truth to it than most wish to fathom. It's probably why alot of musicians commit suicide due to the aggravation of not getting noticed for doing the same caliber of work. falloff

So almost nobody thinks, that Prince wrote the song because he got something to say?

All I see around here is "I like the song" vs. "I hate the song"

But imho this song isn't just a nice poppy summer song, it 's about the things that are going on in the world right now, plz study the lyrics , the earth is heating up you know........

It s sad to see that people don't just listen to the man anymre , for years he tries to get a message out, and nobody listens....

It s just like he says in Hot Summer : " Some of them are teachers some are clowns "

You're definitely the latter. As if this song has a real message. The lyrics are dripping with vagueness and half-baked ideas. There is no point to anything he's saying in this song.

This has to be an ad for the European shows.

There is no way this is the best song he can come up with these days. I can't believe that.

Sure we all know it's not 1987 but he can definitely come up with better songs than this, LF was only 2 years ago and there is some decent work on there so we know it is still possible.

If this turns out to be the lead single and standout track for the new album I might change my mind smile

hmmm I guess no 2+ hour show on Hot Summer? evillol

2 things:

I think you're reading way too much into it. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

And, ironically, in that line you quoted, considering the pseudo-intellectual/philisophical bullshit Prince gloms on to and regurgitates third-hand from what he overheard at a cocktail party, we'd have to classify him as one of the clowns, not a teacher.

I'm not overly fond of it. It's got a vague mid-to-late 80's feel going for it and not much else.

If only he could go back in time and give this to Susanna Hoffs to sing. It's not good enough for him.

I think Prince should just replace the YouTube tags on the Sheila E. New Orleans Super Bowl clip and call it his new song. Far better than most of his recent stuff.

The best part about this particular clip is that NOBODY will know the diffrence. Thats the beauty of it!

No curse words or dopey lyrics either.

I have a feeling Prince obsessively checks this forum in particular for comments on his work. His behaviour pattern seems to dictate that he cares a great deal about his reputation as a songwriter.

Anytime anyone goes out of their way to tell you "Opinions don't matter" That person will always have his/her ear to the ground. It never fails. falloff Poor prince, the one place he could never regulate was the biggest place on the net for uncensored Prince discussion.

Add to that a handful or so of imbalanced medicated individuals and we have a grand ole time. I may be soon to join you with that medication! smile I havent decided on what concoction to prescribe to myself. Im thinking it has to bubble and have a vapor trail coming from it like in "The Nutty Professor" But I have to wonder a bit why Prince fans get so angry that someone says "This song is uninspired" There will be another song and we will judge accordingly. Although we will have a chainsaw and jackhammer behind our back, but those are just trivialities. falloff

P.S. Prince is Buddy Love from the Nutty Professor! I've figured it out! Look at the suits! Buddy Love can't be turned off now! Prince, we will try to save you!! biggrin

Honest i think the Viking song didn't sound good.

Cause& Effect sound Good but if he but cause & effect on the radio waves he might had a hit

Hot Summer is Good too another radio hit. Why i said this is listen at the radio the songs they

have out now don't come close to Prince. (listening out of my own ears) . Katy Perry and miley Cyris) Prince needs to go back to the funk no lie ( if you care you have to be truthful)

And i'm not drinkking purple kool-aid or advisory fam clinic it's the truth..

i went out and had some kids to listen to the song they didn't like it but they like rap.

I bet some people are going to kill me.. And i like "Hot Summer" but i'm being honest.

It's a good song but quite uneven. The verses are really good and sounds fun but the choruses aren't on the same level and sounds a bit simplistic (not in a good way). The choruses aren't bad but there's a noticable difference in quality. Too bad on what could've been a really hot summer song. But still worth revisiting.
