i think someone needs to make a mash up mix of the music from Hot Thing and Hot with You, and mix it with lyrics from teacher, teacher and hot summer as well. think it would be better.

in my mind hearing "hot thing - i wanna get hot with you - it's gonna be a HOT SUMMER" sounds ok-ish.

well probably not.

Exactly. Nu already made the point that the internet globalises everything so news items can be regurgitated on other sites as if it's them that have the scoop. Prince gave to theCurrent (a local MPLS Minnesota radio station). All of us can hear that Hot Summer is not groundbreaking, and a just a piece of pop fluff lacking huge musical substance but some of you should also at least entertain the idea that these aren't perhaps a sign of the end of days and that Prince has lost ALL his mojo.

I was refering to this full page on EW.

http://music-mix.ew.com/2010/06/07/prince-hot-summer-new-song/

My point is the same that this has been a high profile release. Not another "guitar" demo.

Sorry for using the word exclusive.

flip u

And your point is still off the mark! This has NOT been a high profile release!

It went to the Current, days before they played it. Realizing how bad it was, they didn't know what the hell to do with it, until they emailed Paisley Park to wish Prince a Happy Birthday, totally forgetting that he's a JW.

They felt bad about that and decided to give the song some airplay to make it up to him.

The blogger from EW, being a Prince fan, knew it was his BD and looked around the web for some news, got wind of it and wrote up a quick little something to help fill his daily quota, using a video clip from Youtube.

It's it and that's that!

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

What? you think having getting a full page on Entertainment Weekly for a single mediocre music track isn't a big release?

It doesn't matter how it happened. Anything released online has the potential to be a big release. There is no controlling it. To get back to my original point, Prince knows what the internet is and he takes his profile far too seriously. So the suggestion that he just puts this stuff out without quality control for "fun" is just plain silly. This is Prince we are talking about! The track is poor, because it just isn't very well written, performed or produced. Not because he doesn't care about quality control for these releases. This is his product. However fading its quality may be.

hmm

Is that true by the way? Where did you hear that? I was wondering why his birthday was being mentioned!

I remember the original version of Guitar. It royally sucked! But then he added more feeling and GUITAR to it and it turned out ok. Hopefully this song isnt gonna be the final product. It may be ok, if he added more feeling to it and cranked up the guitar more.

Unfortunately, the song is being widely panned on the EW site, too.

Hope he puts out something good, and quick, especially to generate interest in all these shows in Europe.

yeah, I still have it, not very good.

It wasn't released to the radio though was it?

I remember it was put up on the mixing desk of NPGMC as a new demo.

I just don't get why the fams are excusing the lack of quality by saying this is a demo.

We have no way of knowing that.

Maybe it's just poor? boxed

Dude, do you realize how ridiculous that sounds? If he still gave a damn about quality control, your ears nor mine, nor anyone elses would have ever heard that not very well written, performed and produced song!

And for the record, it doesn't take stuff days to blow up on the internet. When it's right, it only takes a matter of minutes!

Have we got crossed wires? Have you read the last few pages of the thread, because it sounds like we are saying the same thing? I'm talking about HIS version of quality control, I don't for a second think, that HE knows he is releasing substandard material. He has just lost it for whatever reason.

And for the record, i never said it takes days for "stuff to blow up on the internet".

Whats your beef?

Do you realize how ridiculous you sound when your comments are not related to whats being discussed?

Read the thread, then come back if you feel the need to comment further, but only after you have done your homework.

You are trying to make the argument that Prince does NOT know that HE is releasing substandard music and I think that is bullshit! HE KNOWS and just doesn't give a damn anymore because no matter how bad it is, some people will still rationalize and give it a pass by saying goofy shit like...it got a full page write up on the Entertainment Weekly (Music Blog page with the only link to the song in that write up being a random Youtube video)...so it's a big release. rolleyes

The song sounds like it is all in fun to me. Can Prince not have fun and release it? Does he have to shatter the Earth every time he releases 3 minutes of music? Come on. WTH do we expect here? I think its okay for him to have music that we think 'sucks' or is 'great', everyone will feel it different to some level, that' s the way art works.

Why should Prince really care? Do not forget, his number one objective is to make MONEY, and music is sort of how he does it. He really makes money by performing. I think the reason a lot of his music is sort of less par now, is that when he is live on stage he could sing 'Doody ma Poody' and people would still go nuts. Why? Because he is Prince.

You may say that you would not cheer simply because he is Prince, fine for you, but the truth is everyone around you will be cheering, and he will never hear you not cheering.

Does he really care if he is on the radio? I think it would be nice for him, but no, not really. His name sells itself. He hasn't been on the radio hit wise in some time, and that doesn't stop Leno and Ebony from taking every effort to grab him up. His name still sells.

Wouldn't we all love to be at a position where our name sells?

Besides, it isn't an honor to be on the radio anymore. Listen to it. It isn't about the talent, it is about the connections. There was a time when someone had to be able to sing to get on the radio, but that time has long past. That time was even dying out as Prince was rising.

Anyone can be a star now. The internet has made cheap the efforts of artist. Prince may be big, but even he has felt that. The stage is all that really counts for him now.

We are all so full of doody here

It DOES matter how it happened because that reveals the original intent of the artist. He did NOT intend this as a major release, the fact that it wound up on a blog on Entertainment Weekly notwithstanding. Do you REALLY think that if Prince had a major release he'd do it this way?

Or would he court radio stations in major markets (like LA), and serious music journalists for major media (like Edna Gunderson for USA Today), and hold a series of listening sessions for his new project--all of which he did for Lotusflow3r.

To base the "purple sky is falling" Prince declension theories on 3 give away tracks to local MPLS outfits is premature, histrionic, and unwarranted.

Actually no, that is not what I am saying at all.

Here let me make it easier for you:

1. Some FAM BS a few pages back commented that Prince should not be held responsible for the quality of these tracks as he was releasing them for fun to a small audience.

2. I pointed out that I didn't believe prince worked that way. He takes himself too seriously.

3. And this was not a "small release" and regardless of who it was originally sent to Prince is well aware of it's potential attention once it hit the internet.

4. I added that there is no way Prince would release music that HE was not happy with. Our reaction to said piece of fluff is however out of his control.

Anymore questions?

Number them 1 to 10, and I will answer them when I get a chance.

Keep working on those comprehension skills.

I'll jump in here...

1. Personally I'm not making an argument about responsibility for quality. Of course Prince is responsible for his creations. My argument is simply about what those songs are supposed to reflect.

2. I think some of you take Prince more seriously than he does.

3. It was a small release. This was most certainly NOT on par with any mounted campaign to make an artistic statement.

4. Again, I'm not debating Prince's happiness with the track. He probably was very happy with it. But you act like he only finds joy in a filet mignon... sometimes a sandwich is just as joyful.

I generally agree. But I have to tell you I don't take Prince seriously.

But Prince does take Prince seriously.

His musical/visual output is everything to him. But he is floundering right now.

That is what echoes in the debate about the size of this release. He released it, that is all thats important to Prince. He let go of one of his babies into the world. He has compared his songs many times to children. He thought it was ready to fly. Then we shat on it. Because it is mediocre.

And I happen to prefer chicken sandwiches to filet mignon.

His last major release--Lotusflow3r/MPLSound/Elixir--I had problems with and was very critical of, especially the poor vocal performance of Bria on Elixir and the failed attempts at swagger on MPLSound. But there were plenty great moments, both technical and artistic, in that set released just a little over a year ago. Enough to challenge any claim of him "floundering."

Are there things I wish he'd do more? Wish he'd do less? Yes. Do I think his lyrics need to be more humanistic and less theistic? Yes. Are his preaching answers far less attractive than his asking questions? Yes. Is there more in my list of what I hope to hear / see from him in the future? Yes.

I was not a fan of "Purple and Gold" nor of "Cause and Effect." "Hot Summer" is just ok--not horribly bad nor amazingly great. But... I'll wait for the next serious/major/complete project before making the claim that he is floundering. I don't count any of those three as the basis for that determination.

You can hear he's going for an 80's sound, with the female voice, but oh dear!

Who's singing on that? She's terrible, and the song is just weeeeaaaakkkkk!

And I happen to prefer chicken sandwiches to filet mignon.

wink

Again, we agree on almost everything. The floundering comment of course is mine alone. Thats just the impression I have gotten from the material he has released lately, it feels to me at least he has lost his musical voice. Don't get me wrong, I think the man is and always will be a musical genius. But of late, well he doesn't seem to know who he is. The tracks all sound like they are trying to be tracks from his back catalogue. Except without the bite, without the smart and crazy lyrics, without the personality? Thats why I say he is floundering.

Prince was never mediocre. Now he has aged. He is no longer at the top of his game. I still enjoy his releases. I just wish he would start writing from the heart again. And I do feel he has been gagged by his new choice in religion.

Keep working on those comprehension skills.

ta ta. flip u

You keep making the same flawed premise that I've already addressed...twice. bored2

And once again, you completely miss the point. Prince released a new track. It is not a small release.

What if it was Madonna/MJ/Gaga/U2/a.n.other artist of stature?

It doesn't matter who it was released to.

What

It doesn't matter who it was released to.

wink

I'm not missing anything. If it were Madonna/MJ/Gaga/U2/a.n.other artist of stature...

1. It would have been a better song.

2. It would have been talked about on more than 3 or 4 websites including this one, therefore making it a big release.

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Ok, so this conversation thing, you know how it works right? I say something and you respond with your view? You don't go off and tangent to a completely subject?
