I tend to agree. I feel a tiny bit sorry for him, but jesus the guy needs to come back down to earth. 3 million$, how many leather covered Opus is that? What? No body bought them and it was cancelled. Woohoo, we just saved several hundred alligators.

Goes to prove that the gig was very much confirmed though for all the doubters out there. I wonder will he pay up? He needs a ...

He needs a big draw, publicity wise. It would be a good time to dust off those classics languising in the vault, build up some hype and release them. He could get a distributer straight away for that stuff...

Then on the back of it, tour his ass off for a year to get himself back on his feet.

I've been a fan of this dude since the 70's. To that extent, I feel a certain "old friend" connection with the guy and it troubles me to see him in this condition. You never know what's going on in a person's life, though. What ever it is, I hope the dude pulls through.

falloff Wow, he finally got nailed for ripping someone off! But how enforceable is this, given Princey isn't a citizen or resident of Ireland? I'll have to investigate... hmmm

And the best part:

hah!

Kelly confirmed Friday that the order was specifically against Prince, not his agents from the William Morris agency, who were absolved of liability.

Edit: Hmm, will we see a tour announcement soon?? hmmm

I'm not understanding all the pity for him. Look, I like the man and his music as much as the next Purple Hippie, but all these folks here saying "You reap what you sew ARE RIGHT!!!!" It's well known to all of us who have been fans (and NO, NOT FAMS - That word wasn't around back when I discovered and became a fan), that Prince is a musical genius and we love the jams, But even his closest of confidants when speaking of him say he's not the nicest man to be around. His antics, LIKE THIS, are exactly WHY we are fans,--and if you need proof.... check the 9+ pages of replies to this thread....
We love the gossip and this ORG is our Purple People Magazine. Hence, 9 pages. LOL.
As far as weather or not he has 3million on hand, DUNNO, DONT CARE.

What I can say is I hope not. Look back through his catalogue of music and tell me the music when he was broke isn't the best of his career. When Prince has plenty of money, we get whatever tempo-changing rhetoric against whoever has pissed him off this week. But, when he's BROKE!!!! He makes the most magical pieces of art that are undying over the test of time.
Think to yourself RIGHT NOW... What is my Least favorite Prince song????
Look at his life/money/pissed-off-meter at that time. Hmmmm??? Coincidence?

Now look at a BROKE Prince..... We get Dirty Mind. We get Gold Experience. We get Musicology.

But yeah I guess ya can't make money on projects when you get bored and move on to the next thing without finishing what you started.

heya Rob good to see ya here.

The man is arrogant as all hell when it comes to paying bills, we all know. Being the control freak he is, don't think for a minute he isn't in control of every $ going out no matter who he has signing for him, so i don't buy anything being anyone's fault like accountants, etc.

Just my own speculation of course, but if he is in any financial trouble- his toes might be wet but the ship ain't sinking or he'd slap together a handful of unreleased oldies and rush it to WalMart/iTunes/amazon. I think he would keep something spectacular ready to go in a pinch if needed- there's a reason he's held back some the most popular nuggets: emergency funds. Like this Box o Chocolates I've read about here- if it's as spectacular as people write, slip that out there with a retro photo, take it to Oprah's show and POW!: he's got bank for the cost of manufacture/distribution.

Yeah I doubt that control freak side of him ever changes. I'm pretty sure he knows the details about all this, but acts like the wizard of purple oz. If he lets someone else take the heat, it's what they were hired for no doubt. But it comes down to.. whose idea was the site? Who went out into the media touting his site as a revolutionary musical universe? That's just bait and switch.

What has me wondering is who will distribute his next album. I doubt it will be target. I can imagine their response.."But.. we can't even give away all the copies we still have left of your last album!" Watch.. I have a feeling those will be $1 as a doorbuster this christmas season on black friday.

I think he's soooo hung up on this idea that his best is yet to come that he's too stubborn to put out any of the real good vault material. Or he re-records it like "In a Large Room With No Light".. which is like saying "I've run out of ideas... lemme get some ideas from my former self" I seriously think he will hold out that bluff so long that we will never see any golden era outtakes until the man is gone and people squabble over the rights. If he doesn't have them buried with him that is..lol

He's no idiot.. he can make that money to pay the bills. Just hope he still has some fans left to buy it when that happens smile

Good to see Prince is forced to pay up when he messes people around as is his standard business practise, now I wonder if a class action from his fans who lost money for flights/hotels/work when he cancelled would work, I doubt it, but might wake Prince up abit when his fans sue him .... we could add the rip off from his websites/clubs to the action as well.

Prince's view of how his fans can fund his lifestyle is bizzarre, the rip off's for the loturflow£r.com website, the O2 aftershows he charged £30 for but then decided on the night if he could be bothered to play or not for his fans, I went to 2 and he played at neither, first concerts i've ever paid for and the artist decided not to play and thats ok ?????

DUBLIN – A Dublin judge has ordered Prince to pay $2.95 million to Ireland's major concert promoters for canceling a 2008 concert at the last minute.

High Court Justice Peter Kelly made public the damages total Friday because the singer has yet to pay the amount to Dublin promoters MCD Productions in a confidential settlement reached last month.

Kelly last month ruled that Prince had committed to perform in Dublin's 82,300-seat Croke Park in June 2008, but withdrew without explanation 10 days beforehand after 55,000 tickets were sold. The 51-year-old Prince did not testify at the hearing.

Kelly confirmed Friday that the order was specifically against Prince, not his agents from the William Morris agency, who were absolved of liability.

Why this took so long is obsurd.
This is not all Prince liability when WMA sould share the burden. They are negilant in themselves.

Why should WMA share the burden? it was Prince who pulled out, not them, if Prince would have played, 55,000 fans would have seen the show and not lost out, this is Prince's fault.

At the time the concerts were cancelled there was much debate on here that Prince hadn't agreed to the gig or signed a contract, for the courts to rule on this, Prince must have agreed to a concert, so if he breaks his contract, infact it was stated he received a large upfront payment for the gig, he's solely responsible for this.

He did a similar thing for Blenheim palace back in 1991, that got cancelled with about a weeks notice if I remember, I had flights/hotel booked for that, that I lost out on then ! I also had tickets/hotels booked for the 1987 SOTT UK gigs that he canceled with short notice, I'll never learn !

What I don't understand in all this is why Prince didn't just come over, play a straight forward set for 90 mins, like he played at the O2, not like he needed loads of rehearsals, a basic stadium stage/lighting wouldn't have been too much hastle too arrange, then he could have pocketed the cash.

So if there is not a contract, there is no real legal evidence. 'No breach of contract.' Recieving an amount of money doesn't constitute a contract. It is very normal for a person 2 recieve some amount of the money.

Legally, there is a contract, as the court ruled Prince had broken it, I do not know if there was a written contract in this case, but you can have a verbal contract, its not normal for someone to receive $1 million advance without entering into an agreement/contract, if it was, i'd like to have one of those deals please !.

As I see the facts as reported, Prince entered an agreement to play Dublin, received a substantial sum up front, the concert was then marketed for months, over 55,000 tickets sold, venue booked etc by the promotor, fans buy tickets, book hotels/travel, take time off work etc, then Prince cancels the week before without explanation..... so who's fault does it sound?

This story went on...

As Prince didn't pay the 2.2 million Euro (3 mill. USD), MCD owner Denis Desmonds took the steps to enforce the judgement:

theirishtimes said:

Mr [Maurice] Collins [SC, for MCD,] also indicated his side may, if necessary, take steps to enforce the judgment via a European Enforcement Order. -source

pollstar said:

[Denis Desmonds] told Pollstar he’s already pursuing Prince via a European Enforcement Order (EEO), a method of enforcing foreign judgments within the European Union without the need for any intermediate proceedings. -> Promoter Not Waiting On Princely Sum

So Prince would not come to a member state of the EU right now...

A few days ago there was a new article about it as Prince still had not paid up on April 13:

Stalking The Elusive Prince

Posted on Wednesday April 14, 2010 at 01:01 PM

Having won a euro 2.2 million judgment against Prince over the singer’s failure to show for a 2008 concert in Dublin, Irish promoter Denis Desmond appears determined to collect his money.

The MCD chief has secured a court order allowing his company to pursue the pop superstar throughout the European Union and is also considering applying to enforce the judgment order in the States.

“I haven’t heard from him and his people haven’t heard from him,” Desmond told Pollstar, after a Dublin court granted him a European Enforcement Order to help him get his hands on the cash.

“I honestly think they’re as much in the dark as we are,” he said, indicating he had no reason to believe it was Prince’s legal advisers who are stalling the payment.

“I think he’s just trying to drag it out for as long as he can and for whatever reason he has for doing so,” Desmond explained. “It’s the rock ’n’ roll business. So, we’ll just proceed with trying to enforce the judgment.”

The EEO means MCD can seek income due to Prince from concerts or other sources throughout the EU.

An Irish court awarded MCD euro 2.2 million ($ 3 million) Feb. 26 because Prince pulled out of a summer show at Dublin’s 82,000-capacity Croke Park at a couple of weeks notice. The amount of the settlement wasn’t revealed at the time because both sides had agreed to it.

On March 26, High Court Justice Peter Kelly ordered Prince to pay the settlement and said he was making the total damages public because so far the veteran rocker hadn’t paid any of it.

On April 13 Prince still hadn’t paid up and Justice Kelly granted MCD permission to go in search of the money.

He also ordered Prince to pay a further euro 5,000 ($6,825) toward the costs of that day’s hearing.

So it seems that he has to pay up first before he can come to Europe (France, U.K. ...)
