Well, for the very same reason I've featured some of your threads on the homepage in the past, because it's of news-worthy interest to the fanbase. I'd say if Rolling Stone magazine as well as numerous news agencies are commenting on it, as well as even the NFL getting involved to stick up for him, that it's pretty newsworthy - regardless of the fact we all know it's a load of bollocks. Not to mention judging by the feedback here, I'd say featuring Anx's thread was more than appropriate.

A male friend of mine sent me an email and mentioned that this guitar looked phallic. I watched the Superbowl performance twice and I hadn't noticed anything like that. So after he made the comment I had to look one more time and then I thought well I could see where some people might think that. Basically I think this comment or idea is thought by people that only know the first part of Prince's career and are stuck on that. I think most of the long time fans just witnessed an awsome performance by a true musician.
I emailed my friend back and set him straight, giving him a lesson on all three guitars that were used during that performance. I said it's a guitar in the shape of a symbol that he once took as his name, nothing more. For heaven sakes if everyone thought of that symbol as a penis, every time you wore a necklace or earrings with that symbol you would associate it with having a penis around your neck or hanging from your ears.

Fuck this!I'm really tired of all the "malfunction"bullshit.First Janet now Prince.Come on people. Is this 2007 or 1957?Maybe they should start filming performances from the neck up.That way no one will be offended.I'm really considering relocating outside of the USA larry luvlife

Hey, what's with all the denials:
Of course it's fucking phallic!!! It's based partly on the masculine symbol, which (very vaguely) is meant to resemble a phallus. On the other hand, who the fuck cares! The fact that it's SUGGESTIVE is the very contrary to saying that it's EXPLICIT or crude. Maybe they should start editing the Empire State Building out of aerial shots of New York shown on TV. And what about women caressing a microphone as they sing into it - what does that make you think of? They should also edit fast-moving trains etc. at crucial moments in old movies shown on the tube... "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

abcnews.com is doing a poll on their homepage on whether people felt Prince's pose was phallic. Here's the results, so far.
Go to http://abcnews.go.com to vote! (from abcnews.com) During this year's Super Bowl halftime show, Prince 's oversized shadow was projected onto a large, flowing beige sheet. To some, the conjoined silhouette of the 48-year-old rock star and his guitar--shaped like the singer's symbol-- suggested a phallus. Was Prince's pose phallic? No. People are being a little too sensitive these days. 207 Yes. I noticed it when I watched. 94 Not sure. I would have to watch it again to see what people are talking about. 32 Total Vote: 333 During this year's Super Bowl halftime show, Prince 's oversized shadow was projected onto a large, flowing beige sheet. honestly, this whole thing is a bunch of BS. he gave a fantastic performance. now some people are trying to nitpick to find something to accuse him with--- just let the guy bask in his accomplishment. sheez. i think the ppl who brought it up don't really like his music. I think Prince totally intended all of this.
However, I've gotta say that the Superbowl performance was Prince at his best. One of the most fascinating and entertaining artistic aspects of Prince and assoiated artists is their ability to be nasty in a clever fashion. Being explicitly nast takes little talent to produce and takes little imagination to understand. This is mostly what we get today, with the exception of Prince and a few others. However, being cleverly nasty is another situation. Early Hollywood was nasty in a clever fashion. Prince is nasty in a clever fashion. Overall, classy art is nasty in a clever fashion. I thought Prince's halftime was perfect. The overall performance was the best of all Superbowl performances. The music was amazing. So amazing was the music that along with the witty work of Prince, the media took a few days to figure out what was "controversial" about the performance. Perhaps for some this section of the performance can shed some light to a new interpretation of the the new song "Guitar"?!?

So amazing was the music that along with the witty work of Prince, the media took a few days to figure out what was "controversial" about the performance. Totally agree. I have to say that I think Prince knew what he was doing--but at the same time he knew it was so perfectly subtle that he (and we) can say, "whatever, it's a guitar. what else would it look like?" and that is plausible. (I don't know if he thought it would become such a hot topic though.) Just like he doesn't sing, "I sincerely wanna f#@k the taste out of your mouth" anymore, but instead he sings, "Imagine me on the tip of your tounge." Cleverly nasty. That said, I think it's beyond ridiculous that this is becoming a 'major' story and I really hope it doesn't completely overshadow Prince's performance. Why aren't people complaining about the latent sexuality of football itself--the quarterback has his hands up the center's(?) ass for every snap--that's WAY more sexual. As my art history professor used to wryly joke, "Everything taller than it is wide is phallic." The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

the only question remains is--Was it intentional? Will Prince EVER admit to it? Not likely.
I think it may have been--what was the purpose of the sheet anyway? How about the Taco Bell commercial with Carmen hovering over an upright burrito ?

Our society really scares me. These same knotheads are probably the same people who payed good money to see penis puppetry on broadway a few years ago. ( yes that really was a show and it really was what you think) and they defended that as art.
It was a guitar, he loves it, they all play with them, get over it. We all woulda rather seen him handle little prince...without the sheet, but that is porno and he don't do it and the NFL won't show it so get over it. Of course it is phallic, duh, get over it. For anyone who still has a problem, come see the doctor, you need valium so you can GET OVER IT. Lord.Mercy. "I don't trust anyone who doesn't laugh--Maya Angelou

The news reports keep forgetting to mention that he cast these supposed lewd shadows during the performance of a song ("Purple Rain") that has absolutely no lewd allusions or imagery in it. If this were truly his intention, don't you think he would've picked a sexual song when displaying his erect guitar?

And you're right. Hell, it's not like Prince was standing in the middle of the stage singing Head, Sexy MF, Jack U Off, or anything like THAT. [Edited 2/6/07 18:47pm] Part of me was kinda hoping he would. Not realistic, I know. But I just can't resist witnessing the crazed, overprotective Mommies and Daddies of America Patrol have a shitfreak that their precious darlings just might figure out there's more to sex than "when a mommy and daddy love each other very much, and they want to have a baby..." So sue me, I love a spectacle. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
