In the 80's,Bruce Springsteen,Michael Jackson, and Lionel Ritchie. They all had top selling albums, and the award shows were all about 'em.As far as I'm concerned 2day,Prince doesn't really have any peers. He's surpassed every1 and stands in a category all by himself.

1980s none (Well, maybe Caetano Veloso)

I agree, back in the day..Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson and Madonna, where his peers, now I would say that Prince stands alone. I do not see anyone equal to him. Most diffenetly not Michael Jackson, I see Michael Jackson as a has been. Now this being said, I was a huge Michael fan back in the early to mid 80's. But when he started going with a lighter skin tone and the nose act, I lost all interest.

Dont forget about ""Rick James, bitch!"", as Dave Chappelle would say!

He never had the world wide appeal reached by the likes of Prince... Madonna,.. Michael... The Boss... etc I would probably have to say his current peers are Madonna... whose career has been nearly as long as Prince's and to a lesser extent Janet Jackson

I LOVE Rick James, but he in my humble opinion did not have that success.

I would say a peer or "contemporay" of Prince would have to be Rick James. I mean, he opened for Rick back in the day, or maybe I'm misinterpreting the meaning of peer?
