Since the Super Bowl, I haven't stopped thinking about him. Whether I think about him a little or a lot, I still feel the same. He's incredibly talented and knows how to perform. And you're absolutely right, if he wanted to create a controversy he would have done something different... that is pretty fun, cuz that is the title of one of his early albums.
I'll say this, though, when it comes to stage presence, he's got one unlike anybody else I've ever seen. Once he comes onstage, he casts his spell and I don't want to/can't look away.

Welcome to the club! wave Man you've got one hell of a lot of catching up to do and exciting discoveries to make! smile

Thanks so much. I joined this site and I couldn't wait to get on and start posting. I've been all over the place today and it's so cool to hear from all of these people that like Prince as much as I do. I have so many thoughts on him that it's good to have someone that'll listen. But you can't blame me for being such a newbie, "Purple Rain" is 2 years older than I am, lol. But better late than never.

What I want to know is...

Where in the hell have these people seen a penis that has a long ass hook going straight though the middle of it?

At no time when Prince was behind that screen could you not see that hook looking thing on his guitar.

So for them to watch what we were watching and come to the conclusion that it looked like a penis, then they must have seen a penis somewhere that looked like that and I want to see it, too! The folks over at Playgirl Magazine must be slipping! razz

Isn't it funny how after all this time, journalists still claim he changed his name to The Artist Formerly...., then to a symbol, then to this, then to that, then back to Prince! Arrrrghh! Can't they get it right? He might be weird, but it was a very simple transformation to a symbol for a few years, then back again. It bugs me people are gonna read that and think it's true.

of course it APPEARS phallic, but the popular argument here seems to be that most folks don't believe prince was on the horn to the NFL halftime producers saying "get me a big ol' sheet to fly on stage so i can stand behind it and do a shadow puppet sausage show. that would be cool. huh-huh. huh. huh. OWWAH!"

it just was what it was. hell, every time someone eats a banana, it looks like a blowjob. doesn't mean that's what they're going for.

Wait a minute - you're doing it too! Listen every1:

1. The symbol and symbol guitar are INTENDED to have phallic connotations.
2. That idiosyncratic P guitar-playing pose clearly and INTENTIONALLY (undoubtedly) has phallic connotations.

OTOH, whether or not the purpose of the sheet was to accentuate that is anyone's guess (highly doubt it), but my main point was, SO F-ing What?
The banana comparison is off the mark - that's unintentionally phallic. My comment was that nearly every car commercial, and certainly nearly every popular music performance contains INTENTIONALLY phallic imagery. That's what makes P's stripping of the metaphor somewhat intentionally ironic i.e. he took a classic phallic symbol and made it look MORE like a phallic symbol!!!

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

i find it ridiculous, that for all the great music this man has allowed us to hear over the years, all the praise he's received throughout his career, and moreso as of late, for his musicianship and artistry, that people can't simply see a guitar hero, behind a curtain wailing on his axe. frankly, it sickens me. so, i say to all the critics, or as i like to call them, "haters on payroll," may u live 2 c the dawn...

Ah, no (it may not have been clear but I don't go with your banana example coz it's a coincidental thing), but the symbol for masculinity for some absurd reason creates that association for me (call it a dick-thing!)

Ya know, what I don't understand is that there was all this controversy over the SB thing, but then you have pics of Wyclef totally grabbing and holding himself multiple times while onstage with Shakira at the Grammys. I haven't heard anybody (media) bitching about that, so WTF?? I hate how some of the rap/hiphop guys do that nowadays, but I guess they think it's cool to emulate the pedo who started it. ill

Pointless discussion, everyone. Musician (especially guitar player) in sexual imagery shocker!! For God's sake! Name me a top guitar player who doesn't through a few naughty moves into his routine. That's why we fucking like them! And it's probably why you don't get guitar solos from female guitar players that make you shoot your load!

Prince's halftime imagery questioned
By JAKE COYLE, AP Entertainment Writer

In the sensitive post-wardrobe malfunction world, some are questioning whether a guitar was just a guitar during Prince's Super Bowl halftime show.

Prince's acclaimed performance included a guitar solo during the "Purple Rain" segment of his medley in which his shadow was projected onto a large, flowing beige sheet. As the 48-year-old rock star let rip, the silhouette cast by his figure and his guitar (shaped like the singer's symbol) had phallic connotations for some.

A number of bloggers have decried "Malfunction!" — including Sam Anderson at New York magazine's Daily Intelligencer. Daily News television critic David Bianculli called it "a rude-looking shadow show" that "looked embarrassingly rude, crude and unfortunately placed."

CBS spokesman Dana McClintock said Tuesday that the network has received "very few" complaints on Prince's performance. CBS last aired the Super Bowl in 2004 when Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake's "wardrobe malfunction" sparked criticism and a subsequent crackdown on broadcast decency from the Federal Communications Commission.

But this time, it was the NFL that produced the halftime show (MTV had in 2004). Spokesman Greg Aiello said the league has received no complaints.

"We respect other opinions, but it takes quite a leap of the imagination to make a controversy of his performance," Aiello said. "It's a guitar."

The majority of the reaction to Prince's performance has been laudatory, including positive reviews from The Associated Press, the New York Times and USA Today — all of which noted the lack of controversy in this year's halftime show. AP Entertainment Writer Douglas J. Rowe wrote: "He delivered one of the best Super Bowl halftime shows — ever."

For decades, the electric guitar, by nature, has been considered phallic. From Jimi Hendrix's sensual 6-string swagger to Eddie Van Halen's masturbatory soloing, the guitar has often been thought an extension of a male player's sexuality.

Was Prince's pose phallic?

"The short answer is, of course it is," says Rolling Stone magazine contributing editor Gavin Edwards, who points out that on Prince's "Purple Rain" tour in the mid `80s, he performed with a guitar that would ejaculate, squirting water out of its end during the climax of "Let's Go Crazy."

"All that said, it didn't seem like a sniggering little puppet show," adds Edwards. "I think it was one of those things because a guitar at waist level does look like an enormous phallus."

By enlarging his shadow, it's possible Prince intended to accentuate this aspect of his solo, but it's just as likely it was accidental. (You can find videos of the halftime show at YouTube.com.) A message left with Prince's publicist Tuesday wasn't returned.

The late-night shows have taken notice. On CBS's "The Late Late Show" on Sunday night, host Craig Ferguson said of Prince: "He was obviously very happy to be there, wasn't he?"

Stephen Colbert reacted with mock outrage on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" Monday night: "They knew that they were dealing with a lustful, pansexual rock 'n' roll deviant," said Colbert, who joked that the sheet hid (not enhanced) Prince's "demonic guitar phallus."

In recent years, Prince has scaled down his performances, which were once renown for their gymnastics. His mini-concert at the Colts-Bears game in Miami included parts of "Purple Rain," "Let's Go Crazy," "Baby I'm a Star," Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," the Foo Fighter's "Best of You" and Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary."

The Minnesota native has attracted controversy before. Tipper Gore launched a campaign to place a warning sticker on his 1984 album "Purple Rain" because of the lyrics to the song "Darling Nikki." Though his musical style has been expansive, he's best known for funky, sexually charged songs like "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and "Get Off."

Prince's previously most talked-about performance came at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards, where he donned yellow, butt-baring pants, (a stunt later spoofed by Howard Stern). Always eccentric, he famously changed his name to The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, then to simply a symbol and finally back to Prince. He also became a Jehovah's Witness in the mid-`90s.

But Prince's halftime performance, though celebrated, came in a much different cultural environment, where even the fleeting outline of a man and his guitar could, for some, suggest shaded depravity.

"If people want to be hypersensitive, they can be hypersensitive," says Rolling Stone's Edwards. "Those trombones are phallic, too. What are you going to do?"

IMHO, I feel it wont be long before prince will be back at his music with

the BAD words etc. I couldnt believe he had that symbol on that superbowl

stage. lol He did say he wouldnt ever play his old stuff right? WELL... He

is !!!! Why is he playing his old stuff when his NEW stuff is so cool ? In

vegas theres LOTS of old people... they would like his new stuff like NEWS,

TRC, and MANY others. This is not right. Has he lost his charisma? The stage

make-up was phemonenol. He MIGHT have had to use the symbol for impact?

However I feel he's back to it. WHY? sad His appearance worried me. I DO

hope hes well. His colors he wears are off. Not HIM. I did notice the twins

were better than I had thought for flashy stage shows. However I NEVER did

notice the stage before when he played. HE was always the focus cuz he was so

dynamic. Anyway, its none of my bizzness. Just a bit depressing. confused I still

LOVE him.

I can't believe we're still talking about it. I'd figure this thread would be locked soon because it's kinda old news and not many of us really care anymore. I didn't interpret it that way at first glance and to this day, I still don't. The press just got bored after two Super Bowls with no "malfunctions" that they started this whole stint about one of the world's most respected, well-known artists.

Reading information on the smoking gun yesterday about the complaints people sent to the FCC it seemed to me that people are just stupid when it comes to not just Prince but what they see & what they want to see.

Prince has played in that so called position for a number of years and then a couple of guitars in different configurations came about where he played in the same manner and it is on record. I have attended Purple Rain, Love Sexy,Hit and Run, One Night Alone, Musicology, shows and recently at 3121 my B-day weekend 12/06 and he played it in somewhat the same way. Look at how you play a guitar, it is strummed from the hip/waist and controled from the neck. It can be said to be phalic no matter what. If this was going to be a big deal I am sure the NFL would have mentioned it to Prince. With all the Janet controversy you know they reviewed the show for content as well they had to have reviewed his past thoroughly before asking him to participate. I don't think they would have ok'd it if they thought it was an issue.

The most insane letter says that the moment in question (I beleive it was only on screen 10 seconds or less) would turn her son gay and (what did janet's breast do to him last time? Did it send him back to breast feeding or is he now a breast man?) she would have to get him HIV tested. With all the stuff on TV, cable, internet (myspace) that are acessible to think that one moment would corrupt a child and turn his life around that much is just insane. People get a life and TEACH your children about things and stop leaving them alone to find out about life on the TV and Internet. Prince creates music not life and death. I do beleive there was a time delay where if there was a problem the FCC could have delayed showing the image and blocked it. If you feared him and the possible imagery so much you should have excercised your FREEDOM and turned the show off and then turned it back on to watch the rest of the game.
Does Anybody know about the QUAKE?? I MEAN REALLY!!!
