Brendan said: Thanks to Prince’s Super Bowl performance, The Coalition Of The Mothers & Fathers Of Children Panicked That Their Kids Will Wake Up One Day And Discover That They Have Genitalia will be working ‘round the clock to get the following guitar guidelines passed into U.S. law:
1) The guitar shall no longer be played in public such that its neck can protrude uncomfortably outward and upward from the waist region. 2) Playing the guitar at face level remains okay, primarily because this just looks like the beak of a big bird and can be quite witty. 3) The preferred method of handling a guitar will be to lay it flat and play it as if you were tickling a newborn. We think the steel guitar players are terrific role models here, just so long as the guitar is part of a table structure and not laid across the lap. 4) The body of most guitars is too curvy and suggestive of the female form. All curves are to be spackled out immediately. The more rectangular you can make the guitar’s body, the better. A pear shape is also acceptable. 5) We understand the auditory need for the hole in the center, but were seeking for it to be closed whenever the guitar is artificially amplified. We’ve considered mandating a patriotic star shape, but have since realized the potential for abusive visualization here as well. 6) Furthermore were looking into there being a whole lot less hand play in and around this acoustic orifice. But we’re naturally cognizant of the constraints this might put on picking and strumming. 7) No more suggestive faces while holding notes or chords. Such behavior is obviously rooted in masturbation and orgasmic bliss imagery. Anything beyond a wink will be considered rude and/or vulgar and will be open to subjective fines. 8) If one must slide their hand up and down the neck of the guitar, it must be slid slowly enough that no untoward images are ever conjured. Sliding your hand too slowly will be considered sensuous and will also not be tolerated. I wouldn't be suprised of what you said is going to be enforce next year. These crazy laws make me want to move to UK or Canada sometimes, and hopefully that would come true of going to the UK in the future. [Edited 2/6/07 19:30pm]

Practically every guitarist out there holds it at waist level when they're playing, so they're all pretty much f*cked by these standards. These ding dongs are sexually repressed, so they see phallic/sexual references in everything.
Yes, Prince did jack off his guitar back in the day, but I think that was the furthest thing from his mind during this performance.

Thanks, Brendan. I am still laughing. Well written.
Just watched the show again. Prince made the same move at least three other times with two different guitars. Letitgo, folks. Just letitgo. nuh-uh! there's pear-shaped women out there, too...same with those with no curves at all. may as well just give it all up and have it so nothing's acceptable but air guitars.

They’re working on that one. Here’s the rough draft: 9) The movements of an air guitarist can easily be misconstrued without the proper context. It is therefore mandated that the hands of the air guitarist be held out at arm's length, perpendicular to the body and preferably gloved at all times while participating in the miming of the old system of guitar playing.

But, seriously, what a joke! Shoulda known they'd find a way to slam Prince. At least most of the press has been extrememly positive.

This 'discussion' is just laughable and sooooo american. Here in europe you can see naked people on tv EVERY DAY. And guess what ? NO ONE CARES. A few hours ago I saw a penis on tv, A REAL PENIS, not just something that could be interpreted as a symbol for a dick. A real one. So what ?

It seems like the critics will find any reason to keep Prince out of the mainstream. They don't understand some of the things he's done, like changing his name to a symbol, wearing buttless pants, or acting all mystical and mysterious for a while there. The true fans stuck by him, but the general public exiled him. I feel like they just can't get over the past, and recognize Prince for who, and what, he really is. They'd much rather see him as the weird guy with the heels and squiggly name than a true musical genius. I almost feel sad for them. They don't know what they're missing. Yes its sad Some times people Just are not Happy with what they see and want more Or i feel they cant Understand him yes he has made Missakes in the Past but Shit No ones perfect Sheesh. i Loved His Performance Was Amazing Bravo

First they are afraid of a breast...now a phalic symbol! It's just certain people in America, Mike. There are some people who like to make a sensation and a scandal out of everything. They are trying to point fingers at someone else to distract from their own problems. These kinds of people can be found all over the world, and they come in many different shapes, sizes, and colors. Funny why the Hell are they afraid of a phalic symbol ? thats messed up yes i Agree They can be Found Every where i Thought His Performance was Amazing. Oh! I love ya Baby but not like i Love my Guitar.

This popped up as front page news on some of the top websites -- I showed my mother and told her about the comments (Prince purposely making lewd shadows against the backdrop of a giant condom, etc). My mother was shocked. I showed her the article -- it was one of the top 5 news items of the day. My mother said, "THEY'RE PIGS!!!! THEY'RE PIGS TO THINK SOMETHING LIKE THAT!!! THEIR MINDS ARE IN THE GUTTER!!"
By the way, she was VERY impressed with the performance, especially "Purple Rain" -- she said, "I love that song." She also liked the dancing girls and how they were dressed (might have something to do with my mom being a big Tina "Proud Mary" Turner fan). edit: anyway, out of all songs for Prince to cast lewd shadows, do you really think he'd do it to "Purple Rain" -- come on!!! Once again this country is SO STUPID!! That image bothers someone?? In the middle of the Superbowl filled with commercials showing tits and ass, and commercials talking about prolonged erections, give me a fucking break with this country already, no wonder we are looked at like morons around the world, because we are in uproar over Princes guitar movement, what is this 1950 where Elvis had to be filmed waist up, we really havent made any progress "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I missed the actual performance, so I watched it on Youtube and when I saw this part, I said to myself, "Self, so many dirty-minded individuals are going to think that Prince was strokin' himself." I laughed it off of course, but I guess, I was pretty right to feel that way. How else was he supposed to play the guitar....have it hovering over his head while he went through the stringing motions in the air? For people to even think this, they have to have a pretty filthy thought process (which I do, but am not ashamed to admit:-D ). He has always played the guitar this way, so I don't see what the big deal is. It's not like he had stuff spewing out of it like in the old days. He could have put the guitar on the stage and humped it like he used to do, but he actually chose to do a clean performance. I was super proud that he performed in the rain; and he did it looking GQ has hell. He's the ultimate, and anyone who says otherwise is just too embarrassed to admit that the performance was phenomenal; and that Prince was/is/and will always be one of the greatest performers of all time....period. I thought so in the 90s. People did some very naughty things in public and on TV than Prince so called phallic and there was little buzz. This decade does feel like being in the 50s again at times.

I knew what he was doing and yes it was intentional but...it was done with some subtlety and class. You didn't see him pulling any stripper antics or even his older buttless chaps or ejaculating guitar stuff. It was done with Princely class, but, ONLY PRINCE COULD DO THAT SO COOL.

Also, as we know, Prince has never been above stirring a bit of controversy. Can you imagine the outrage if he humped the stage?
