congrats to him... too bad it doesn't make the music any better.

having said that.. isn't this amount of sales for a week for a no.1 album low? i can't recall a usuall amount for a no. 1

maybe its all the rest of those shit albums that keep me thinkin its low
[Edited 3/28/06 19:56pm]

Yeah, I think it's fairly low numbers but enough to propel him to #1!! Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor debuted at #1 last year selling 350,000 copies.

They don't and they do. They don't because a great album's a great album no matter if it sells poorly or well. Some of the "best albums of all time", as picked by reasonably well-informed critics, didn't sell well but were influential like Nico & the Velvet Underground. They do business-wise, though Prince went a long way toward making this all relarive, with his much greater share of $$$ per cd, though everyone knows the money's in touring. And in terms of immediate cultural impact, yeah they do, and it's always nice to know the music is getting heard by a wider audience. But at the end of the day, like I said, a great album's a great album, and a number 1 crappy record is still a crappy one.

Great assessment. Chart impact has no bearing on musical quality. However, I can't help but be happy for Prince. It is clear that he was aiming for a hit record here, and I'll be...he got it! Renfield's post is quite eloquent and well-stated. This is vindication for Prince after all of those years in the shadows, and the relative success of Musicology and now 3121, particularly in live settings, affirm that for all of his quirks and illogical decisions, Prince is still revered and relevant as a musician.
Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

Well said! clapping clapping clapping

It is about vindication, not just musically, but as a business model to some extent.

When Prince went through his nasty (and very public) divorce from WB most folks labeled him a fruitcake and proclaimed his career over. Walk away from a $100 million contract? He's a loon. He's committed career suicide. He'll never recover.

And for awhile this proved to be the case. Distribution and publicity dried up except for negative press and jokes. The music suffered as well imho.

But one of the points of this exercise had to do with the very real issues of intellectual property rights and music industry practices that don't work to the advantage of artistic expression. Prince has looked for ways to create a new business model that allows for music to be both lucrative and created on its own terms. He's made many attempts at this -- internet distribution, mail order, CD give-aways with the concert ticket, variations on the theme of one-album deals with the majors.

The successful return of Prince to the charts sets a precedent for a career strategy. Chart position, right or wrong, is a standard measure of success in the industry, so if Prince can attain success on the industry's terms, it blazes a trail.

And folks say Prince isn't innovative anymore.....
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

honestly, the only vindication i see from anyone at times like this is from the fanbase alone. it totally bugs the shit outta me, as if some of ya'll need to have constant signs or something.

This is great news. It's been a long time coming. Hey help the man out and call your fair weather Prince fan friends and tell them to buy this album. Not for the sake of the charts, but because it's a great album. Have fun y'all, and let's have a group prayer that the tour starts soon.

If it wasnt a contest, there wouldnt be charts. His chart position doesnt change my listening habits either. But it is still a little gratifying to see my favorite musician back on top and in the spotlight. Kinda like when the Cowboys won superbowls back in the 90's. Our favorite teams/players/musicians are believe it or not a reflection of who we are or what we like.

sure, but unlike most people i really don't need instant gratification/vindication by the way of seeing my favorite artists get awards. i dig who i dig because of what they do and how they do it, not because of whatever kudos and tangible awards they receive or are/should/could/would be capable of receiving.

It's just estimates, numbers pumped by Hits Daily Double...the interesting part is the album may still hit 200, 000 (for those who care...) because of the Starbuck numbers...the 184 is not an official number...Daily Double have been known to be 20, 000 to 100, 000 off...

he has a loyal fanbase of 100,000 or so, and it's probably been assumed that Prince has picked up some fans since Musicology, the tour, the new videos, the commercials, ads, SNL performance, etc. oh yeah, and those who buy extra copies for their friends and family (especially since this is a GREAT album), not to mention trying to find the purple ticket
