I also wonder how it's doing over here in Europe, most of the
larger record store chains have these in house charts where u
can see what's selling well at the moment in their store and,
not surprisingly it was doing very well in Holland.

He was nr 5 in one chain and nr 4 in another and that was the
only two I had time to look at, last sunday.

Usually he sells around 40,000 per album in the Netherlands..

I guess total global sales of 3121 must be about 400-500k by
now.

The story behind 3121 charting so low on the uk charts only #9

Despite charting lower than many of its predecessors, 3121 was the most eagerly received new album by Prince in more than a decade, selling 37,130 copies last week to debut at number nine. Prince's last album of new material, 2004's Musicology, debuted at number three on sales of 32,945, while his 2001 Very Best Of set went one better, debuting at number two with 28,942 sales. Even his last number one album, Come, had lower first week sales than 3121, opening with 33,375 sales in 1994. 3121 is Prince's first Universal album, and means he has now released albums for all four current majors.

[Edited 3/28/06 14:21pm]

I just knew it! The Mother's Day rush for bland Xfactor rejects and opera-lite was the wrong damn week to release 3121 in the UK. Still given the hang up on dates with this whole project I dont suppose Universal UK had any option. Notice the TV ads are continuing this week, which is good...

Re: UK sales - I knew that Mothers Day week was going to be bad news - all that Xfactor and opera-lite filling up the charts.

Anyway good news that it outsold Musicology - put that down to the stunning Brits performance.

Now, for that performance to get an official release as a B-side... anyone know anyone at Universal...?

That's good news. Prince went from a cult artist to a huge star to a cult artist to a huge star, once again. People that are now complaining about a #1 album make me laugh so hard. Same people doggin' him for the sales of Rave, TRC, and the "chart success" of Musicology due to the bundling. Now they're complaining about a #1 album on Billboard. Reading this forum is great for about 100 laughs an hour. This album sucks! It's great! He's #1! He's #1 because of promotion! It's because of a the purple ticket! blah blah blah blah. shut up already.

The album might not dip as quickly or as far as some here are predicting. With a No.1. album and all the displays in stores/inevitable resulting publicity, it gives Prince more credibility than he's had for years with the general record buying public. They might just take a chance on this 'new sensation'.

I've personally felt a bit self-conscious about buying the latest Prince album when he's been anything but trendy, and although I've made the purchase with pride knowing that I was in the right, Mr. Joe Public wouldn't have been seen anywhere near it.

I have the feeling that a considerable number of people will have '3121' as their first Prince album.

WOO-frigging-HOO!!! woot!

I know charts and sales don't really matter - a good album is a good album is a good album - but...

it is nice to see Prince getting the attention he deserves. This is fantastic! clapping

I was disappointed to see 3121 only get to No 9 in the UK chart but the fact that this week's No 1 was by two people who are an insult to the term 'pub singers' says more about the state of the music industry and highlights what shocking taste the general public have. disbelief

As Jonathan Ross said the other day, it's as if record execs really think mothers have the most appalling taste. Shove out an X-Factor drop-out's album or some shite compilation in Mother's Day week and they think mums everywhere will lap it up. rolleyes

So, yeah, I'm very pleased that it got to number one. A real musician getting the respect he deserves. F*** these no-talent charlatans.

It's cool news. A bit strange, really. I think it gives P more room to move - he doesn't need to prove commercial relevance and so, hopefully, will go back to doing what he feels like. (When he was supposedly "free" he was very involved with proving his relevance (emancipation, Rave, NPS) - the best stuff was the stuff in which it seemed he didn't care: CB, War, Truth, TRC etc.)

If it wasnt a contest, there wouldnt be charts. His chart position doesnt change my listening habits either. But it is still a little gratifying to see my favorite musician back on top and in the spotlight. Kinda like when the Cowboys won superbowls back in the 90's. Our favorite teams/players/musicians are believe it or not a reflection of who we are or what we like.

sure, but unlike most people i really don't need instant gratification/vindication by the way of seeing my favorite artists get awards. i dig who i dig because of what they do and how they do it, not because of whatever kudos and tangible awards they receive or are/should/could/would be capable of receiving.

Hardly anything instant about it. If fans needed a "constant sign", then how cum we've done without number 1 anything since 94? That ain't "constant" or "instant".

Wrong! Decent first half (setup). Brilliant second half, tension filled, and an unpredictable, incredible ending. Had the audience gasping for more. You think the ring will get him caught by the police, because it didn't go in the water, But this ain't no Hollywood film. It's the most intense, truest philosphical statement ever... Woody pulls the rug out from under you, proving that luck is blind. In a game like tennis, with rules, the ball coming back at you is a lost point. However, since life has no rules, and no God/justice, the ring coming back at you can be good, or bad... It's all luck. Brilliant film.

Noticed you gave Big Momma's House the same score. I just gotta laugh.

Awesome, would be cool if he can stay there longer than a week but doubtful.

Now, when's the last time he had a number 1 single. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening. I thought Black Sweat would get airplay but it isn't doing so well. Even on VH1's top twenty it just hovers around 18 while Madonna's crap ass Sorry charts higher. Guess Prince better break out the spandex for the next video smile

Prince doesn't deserve it nearly as much as the marketing genius' at the record company. By saying there is purple ticket inside (has anyone seen one yet?), not posting it on itunes for sale, posting two videos from the cd and letting us hear 4 tracks from the cd before it hits the shelves, AND canning the hits compilation (for competition), was incredible!!

Thats how you get a #1 cd

When is he hitting the talk shows? Im waiting for a Leno or Letterman performance at least. He should talk to American Idol, it helped Barry Manilow's album sales soar. I don't know if I'd want to sit thru some of the saps covering P songs but then he could come out himself and show what a real performance is smile
