Prince is always #1 in my eyes, but I have to admit that this is awesome.

You guys seem to say this every time and MJ/Prince thread comes up.

Anyway, congrats 2 Prince. 3121 is the most deserving album in the charts at the moment to be at #1.

also, hasnt 3121 sold far more in its first week than musicology, and musicology had about 20,000 concert giveaways included.

WOW. Holy cow. I can't believe it. Prince has the number one album in America. It's been a very looooong time since I've seen this. Just a few years ago I couldn't have imagined he would ever be on top again.

Charts don't make music better, but I'm very happy for this. It's vindication. Not for me, what do I need vindication for? It's vindication for Prince. All those years (namely the years) his fight to be his own artist was mocked. He became a joke and his status as a future legend was in doubt. And to be fair, to a large extent, he brought it on himself.

But here we are now, in 2006. I can certainly understand how this means nothing to a lot of people. But to me, Prince being back at number one, on his own terms, is like the Kid coming out on stage, clearing his throat, and leading the band into "Purple Rain." People doubted, and most considered him finished, but when it really counted he proved he still had it.

I know this will likely be a blip on the map in the grand scheme of things, but I just think this is awesome.

Considering that many people thought he was destroying his own career -- at least from a commercial standpoint -- between 1993 and 2003, and had basically written him off, this "comeback" is very impressive. Well done.

Some of the "best albums of all time", as picked by reasonably well-informed critics, didn't sell well but were influential like Nico & the Velvet Underground. They do business-wise, though Prince went a long way toward making this all relarive, with his much greater share of $$$ per cd, though everyone knows the money's in touring. And in terms of immediate cultural impact, yeah they do, and it's always nice to know the music is getting heard by a wider audience.But at the end of the day, like I said, a great album's a great album, and a number 1 crappy record is still a crappy one.
