WOW. Holy cow. I can't believe it. Prince has the number one album in America. It's been a very looooong time since I've seen this. Just a few years ago I couldn't have imagined he would ever be on top again.

Charts don't make music better, but I'm very happy for this. It's vindication. Not for me, what do I need vindication for? It's vindication for Prince. All those years (namely the prince years) his fight to be his own artist was mocked. He became a joke and his status as a future legend was in doubt. And to be fair, to a large extent, he brought it on himself.

But here we are now, in 2006. I can certainly understand how this means nothing to a lot of people. But to me, Prince being back at number one, on his own terms, is like the Kid coming out on stage, clearing his throat, and leading the band into "Purple Rain." People doubted, and most considered him finished, but when it really counted he proved he still had it.

I know this will likely be a blip on the map in the grand scheme of things, but I just think this is awesome.

It means a whole lot to me. I hope lots of people fnally find out what we have known for a long time.

Damn, I'm proud of him.

I am also proud of Prince hug . I personally feel that any 1 who cares about him; not just because of chart position, but connects w/ him through his music, wants him 2 b recognised for his talent and for what he can do.

Best of all, like many have said..he's stuck to being himself, no matter what many people have said. He deserves every GOOD thing that comes his way...& we love it grouphug

nod yep, 3121 is a nice "PRINCE" album and very deserving of a #1 spot -- ppl take notice -- 20 years later and Prince is still as good as he's always been -- even better live

Good for him. For all his fronting on how charts and awards don't matter, I know he's geeked about this. I just hope next album he can do it without some kind of marketing gimmick. For real though, good for him.

From HitsDailyDouble:

NO “SWEAT”: PRINCE IS KING OF THE CHARTS

High School Musical #2, B.G., Ben Harper and Teddy Geiger Bow in Top 10

March 28, 2006

He’s partying, well, like it’s 1985.
Prince’s Universal Records debut 3121 is his first album ever to bow at #1, and the first to top the charts since Around the World in a Day 21 years ago, with an impressive 184k in sales.

That total is more than enough to beat back Walt Disney Records’ resurgent High School Musical soundtrack, which boasts a robust 153k, representing a 14% increase.

Custard/Atlantic’s James Blunt’s 112k is good enough for #3, while Arista/RMG’s Barry Manilow climbs back into the Top 5, moving #20-4 with a 127% rise in sales, thanks to his performance and his songs being sung by contestants on last week’s American Idol. Def Jam/IDJ’s Ne-Yo rounds out the chart leaders at #5.

The other three newcomers to the Top 10 include Koch rapper B.G. (#6), Virgin’s Ben Harper (#7) and Columbia/CRG’s Teddy Geiger (#9), fueled by Top 40 play and a featured role on Clear Channel’s online developing artist program NEW! for his impressive bow.

Island/IDJ’s Johnny Cash compilation at #8 and ACR/Arista Nashville’s Alan Jackson gospel album at #10, with an impressive 36% gain, are the other Top 10 entrants.

Debuts in the Top 50 include Capitol Nashville’s Kenny Rogers (#17), Reprise’s My Chemical Romance CD/DVD package (#31), Epitaph punk-rockers From First to Last (#35), Sony BMG Latino’s premier NOW compilation (#36) and Rhino/WEA’s Chicago XXX (#39).

Sales increases are registered by VP/Atlantic’s Sean Paul (+8%), A&M/Interscope’s Keyshia Cole (+8%), Fueled by Ramen’s Panic! at the Disco (+8%) and Universal’s Chamillionaire (+10%).

Next week, look for Tim McGraw’s Greatest Hits Volume 2 on Curb and Atlantic rapper T.I. to battle it out for the #1 spot, with debuts from Def Jam’s Ghostface Killah, Geffen’s Rob Zombie, Interscope’s Yeah Yeah Yeahs! and Rap-A-Lot’s Do or Die. Also, the repackage of the Shakira album on Epic should see significant gains, thanks to the inclusion of the smash single, "Hips Don't Lie," which she'll perform on this week's American Idol.

idiots! if each person voted for Bush three times, does that really make him the president?

If suckers buy 3 Prince CDs in the hopes of obtaining that lame ticket, does that really make him Number 1?

As if other people don't buy multiple copies of an album hoping to get it to number 1? rolleyes

I bought 1 copy for myself, and 3 others as gifts. Prince earned this number 1.

So exactly WHY are you so upset about this? The comparison to vote fraud is just silly. As if noone's ever bought more than one copy of an album before? shrug If the purple ticket promo has something to do with achieving #1, then good on Prince or whoever thought up a successful promotion.

And before you flame me, I only bought one copy, thanks. wink

Yes, but I think they don't consider it a proper studio album. It's silly that it doesn't qualify, as it should.
