WOW. Holy cow. I can't believe it. Prince has the number one album in America. It's been a very looooong time since I've seen this. Just a few years ago I couldn't have imagined he would ever be on top again.

Charts don't make music better, but I'm very happy for this. It's vindication. Not for me, what do I need vindication for? It's vindication for Prince. All those years (namely the prince years) his fight to be his own artist was mocked. He became a joke and his status as a future legend was in doubt. And to be fair, to a large extent, he brought it on himself.

But here we are now, in 2006. I can certainly understand how this means nothing to a lot of people. But to me, Prince being back at number one, on his own terms, is like the Kid coming out on stage, clearing his throat, and leading the band into "Purple Rain." People doubted, and most considered him finished, but when it really counted he proved he still had it.

I know this will likely be a blip on the map in the grand scheme of things, but I just think this is awesome.

The story behind 3121 charting so low on the uk charts only #9

Despite charting lower than many of its predecessors, 3121 was the most eagerly received new album by Prince in more than a decade, selling 37,130 copies last week to debut at number nine. Prince's last album of new material, 2004's Musicology, debuted at number three on sales of 32,945, while his 2001 Very Best Of set went one better, debuting at number two with 28,942 sales. Even his last number one album, Come, had lower first week sales than 3121, opening with 33,375 sales in 1994. 3121 is Prince's first Universal album, and means he has now released albums for all four current majors.

There can be some variance between Hits Daily Double and Billboard's final numbers, but with a 31,000 copy lead I'd say he's pretty safe. And most of the online retailers and mom & pop stores Billboard factors in that HDD doesn't will likely favor 3121 over High School Musical anyway. So if anything, his numbers may go up tomorrow when Billboard releases the final chart info.

Either way, I'd say it's pretty safe now to proclaim him number one. woot!

And Tangerine17, hopefully this success will help your work on Ultimate Prince sell better when it finally sees the light of day (I found a copy for myself; you did a great job on the artwork!).

Indeed...this is just an estimate guys...But also, here's something to remember...Prince can be over the 200, 000 level when the official numbers are released (Starbucks should play a huge role in P's chart status...); whatever the numbers, it's going to be interesting...

also, hasnt 3121 sold far more in its first week than musicology, and musicology had about 20,000 concert giveaways included.

3121 has been massive in its first week without any major promotion and without itunes!

RAVE IN2 THE JOY FANTASTIC!

Congratulations indeed 2 my beautiful main man!! We all know that chart positions really mean nothing but i cant help but beam from ear 2 ear & jump 4 joy that he has put himself back on the map. With the biggest grossing American tour in 2004 & now this i wonder if in future editions Alex Hahn will re-title his tacky book,`The rise & fall & rise again of Prince`.Somehow i doubt it but Prince sure has given him & all the doom & gloomers the finger!!!
