I agree that today, Bruno Mars is a better artist than Prince, new music-wise. But Bruno cannot touch 80's Prince. He is still miles away from getting 80's Prince good.

Bruno Mars' Super Bowl Show Sending Him Back to Top 10 on Billboard 200By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | February 03, 2014 3:17 PM EST Bruno Mars is set to return to the top 10 of the Billboard 200 albums chart, thanks to his Super Bowl halftime performance on Sunday, Feb. 2. According to estimates from industry sources, the entertainer's latest album, "Unorthodox Jukebox," sold perhaps 40,000 copies in the week ending Feb. 2. That would represent a 164% gain compared to the previous week, when it sold 15,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album's official sales figures, as tabulated by SoundScan, will be released on Wednesday, Feb. 5 (the same day as when the new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be unveiled). If "Unorthodox" returns to the top 10 with 40,000, it will mark the album's first visit to the top 10 since the Billboard 200 chart dated Sept. 14, 2013, and its best sales week since March of 2013.
"Unorthodox Jukebox" was already aiming to sell around 19,000 in the week ending Feb. 2, thanks in part to Mars' exposure at last week's Grammy Awards (Jan. 26). Mars was presented the award for best pop vocal album on the Grammys, but did not perform on the show. (He got additional screen time from his nominations in other categories -- like record of the year and song of the year -- though he didn't win those races.) According to Fox, who cite Nielsen data, Mars' halftime show attracted the largest aud...Super Bowl, with 115.3 million viewers. That figure surpasses the prior record of 114 million set by Madonna two years ago. The big game drew 111.5 million TV viewers, down from the 109 million that tuned in a year ago (February 3, 2013). Last year, Beyonce headlined the Super Bowl halftime show (110.8 million), where she was briefly joined by her Destiny's Child group members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Unlike Mars, Beyonce didn't have a current album riding high on the charts at the time. In the week ending February 3, 2013, Beyonce saw her most recent album, 2011's "4," re-enter the Billboard 200 at No. 100 with 4,000 sold (up 123%). The following week -- after a full week of sales impact was felt from the game -- the album climbed to No. 79 with 6,000 (up 59%).
The impact of the Super Bowl on Mars' music sales -- and on the Billboard charts -- will be unique compared to all other halftime headliners in the modern era of Super Bowl halftime entertainment. Since 1993, when Michael Jackson headlined the halftime festivities, the main performer on the show has generally been an act with a fairly deep catalog of albums and songs. Mars, however, has only released two albums -- "Unorthodox Jukebox" (released in 2012) and "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" (2010). Thus, all of the sales and chart impact felt by Mars will be concentrated on just those two albums (and their respective singles). Unlike previous years, where everyone from Beyonce and Madonna to Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen saw their post-Super Bowl chart impact spread across multiple albums and songs.

Bruno Mars Tops iTunes After Most-Watched Super Bowl Halftime Show
After breaking the record for the most-watched Super Bowl halftime showever with 115.3 million viewers, Bruno Mars has roared his way up the iTunes sales charts on Monday. The 28-year-old's sophomore album, Unorthodox Jukebox, which recently won Best Pop Album at the Grammys, secured the No. 1 spot on iTunes' Top Albums chart and his debut album moved up to No. 3. Two other versions of those albums are Nos. 8 and 17.
Meanwhile, 14 versions of 12 of his songs snagged spots on iTunes Top Songs, with "Locked Out of Heaven" at No. 6, "Just The Way You Are" at No. 7, "Treasure" at No. 13, "Young Girls" at No. 16, and "When I Was Your Man" at No. 19. Mars' label, Atlantic Records, told Mashable his performance has had a major effect on ticket sales for his "Moonshine Jungle World Tour." Tickets for the North American leg of the tour went on sale Monday and many markets quickly sold out of tickets. Below, watch Mars' show which, based on viewership, beat out Beyonce's 2013 halftime show (110.8 million). The show trumped Madonna's 2012 show (114.0 million).
Mars, the youngest artist to ever serve as a sole halftime show headliner, opened on the drums for "Billionaire," a Travie McCoy song on which he was featured in 2009, before launching into a hip-swinging performance of "Locked Out of Heaven." Mars followed those songs up with a rambunctious rendition of "Runaway Baby." He closed the set with "Just The Way You Are," which began with an emotional video of troops addressing their loved ones. Between "Runaway" and "Just The Way You Are," the Red Hot Chili Peppers joined Bruno Mars onstage to rock out on "Give It Away." The Red Hot Chili Peppers' Greatest Hits album also saw a sales impact because of the veteran rock band's cameo; it's currently at No. 6 on iTunes' Top Albums chart.

I really don't get the appeal of Bruno Mars. Are people really so desperate for a contemporary male artist that they're hailing this guy as the second coming??

^^ The fact that you are even comparing him to MJ goes to show how easily people buy into the hyperbole of mass exposure from the Superbowl.
I'll sit up and pay attention when he crosses genres the way MJ did with Beat It, or when he writes one of the greatest pop songs of all time like Billie Jean, or when he sells out soccer stadiums the world over.
Girl You're Amazing and The Lazy Song don't really cut it, I'm afraid.

I like Bruno but I can understand why you're saying this. I think part of it is timing. He's come along at a time when there's a glut of female pop artists. I was/am weary of all the female pop artists, to tell you the truth. I think that's part of it. I remember a long time ago, I read a quote by MJ (to paraphrase) that goes something like: "Female artists don't have male fans screaming for them the way that male artists have female and male artists screaming for them...that's the reason that male artists sometimes eclipse their female counterparts"....I think part of Bruno's appeal is that he's not overtly sexual and is a throwback artist with sprinkles of the new generation. I think the female pop artists have been taking too many pages out of the Madonna/Janet/Tina playbook for so long that it's becoming extremely redundant.... Trolls be gone! | |

But the songs just aren't there. He has a good voice, a likeable personality and is competant on his instruments (unlike Justin Timberlake who basically plays a few chords and thinks that makes him a musician), but the songs are just.... bleh.

"We're gonna just jam tonight – it's just an old-school party," said Prince on Friday night, a few minutes into the first of three nights at Uncasville, Connecticut's Mohegan Sun Arena. And for the next two-and-a-half hours, the Minneapolis Maestro and a razor-sharp 20-piece band tore through a show that spanned his 35-year career, illustrating not only the range of his own phenomenal work, but also his influences and his legacy. See Where Prince Lands on Our List of the 100 Greatest Singers Dressed in a yellow suit over a matching turtleneck, and with his Afro grown out almost to the heights depicted on the cover of his 1978 debut, For You, Prince alternated between the two styles he has brought to the stage in the past year: horn-heavy soul grooves, backed by the latest incarnation of the New Power Generation, and stripped-down rock with the three-piece, all-female 3rd Eye Girl. "We heard you were starved for the funk up here," he said at one point, and from the opening slam of 1994's loopy "Days of Wild," he turned this middle-aged and very white crowd into a sweaty dance club. Yet unlike Prince's August appearance at New York's City Winery (his last U.S. concert outside of his hometown), he didn't shy away from featuring his incandescent guitar work. Slipping on a multi-colored instrument midway through "Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)," he shifted into a rock mini-set that also included the grinding, slowed-down "Let's Go Crazy" that he introduced last year and the glorious b-side "She's Always in My Hair." After concluding with a lengthy, exploratory solo, Prince quietly said, "Cool, I got that out of my system," and brought the full band back to the stage for an extended take on "Musicology," complete with the horn players lining up to make a Soul Train line. As he concluded the main set with a medley of Purple Rain-era hits that he wrote for other acts – "The Bird" and "Jungle Love," both recorded by The Time, and Sheila E.'s "The Glamorous Life" – Prince joked, "How many hits we got?" In truth, though, most of Friday's set favored deeper cuts, bypassing such monster singles as "Kiss," "Raspberry Beret," and "Little Red Corvette" in favor of the blistering James Brown tribute "Housequake" and "Let's Work." Several of his signature smashes turned up in the encore, which began with Prince alone at a keyboard, in complete darkness, singing segments from songs including "When Doves Cry" and "Sign o' the Times" while triggering samples of his own recordings. It was an oddly intimate and experimental moment, like an improvised DJ set, spontaneous and thrilling and a little uncomfortable. As midnight passed, the inevitable closer was a heartfelt "Purple Rain," with a tender vocal and winding guitar solo that saw him exploring the indelible melody as if it were a brand-new song. In presenting the latest manifestations of both his funk and rock sides, Prince demonstrated that he is as much a virtuoso bandleader as he is a guitarist. Working with eleven horn players, he can arrange and conduct a true big band like a modern-day Duke Ellington, with musicians so drilled and disciplined that he can stop them all on a dime or call for solos on the spot. Indeed, sometimes it felt like he was giving too much stage time to the band and the back-up singers, but at this stage in a legendary career, the expanded line-up offers Prince a whole new palette to paint with. It was widely speculated that the Mohegan Sun shows would herald a full-scale tour, but so far, there's been no further word. As this performance reminded us, though, all that Prince needs to do to take over the world again is decide that he wants to. As he put it on Friday night, "School's in – I'm the teacher." (CNN) -- Perhaps Bruno Mars really did win the Super Bowl. According to Billboard, the Grammy-winning singer is set to return to the charts after his halftime performance on Sunday. It reports that sales of his latest album, "Unorthodox Jukebox," rose by 164% after Mars took to the Super Bowl stage with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The album was released in December 2012. Such an increase in sales is not rare or unexpected. Last year's halftime performer, Beyonce, reportedly saw a bump in sales of her "4" album by 123%. In 2010, he won a Grammy for best male pop vocal performance for his song "Just the Way You Are." In January, "Unorthodox Jukebox" won Mars his second Grammy, this time for best pop vocal album.
The album may re-enter the top 10 when sales figures are released by Soundscan on Wednesday. This year's Super Bowl drew a record-breaking 111.5 million viewers. As is customary, Mars did not receive an appearance fee for his Super Bowl performance. Artists do it for the exposure, and that has clearly paid off for Mars. Zack O'Malley Greenburg f...bes writes that the singer may see the most return in increased ticket prices and sales for his Moonshine Jungle tour. "In 2013, the singer grossed $72.4 million on 84 shows; his average ticket price sits at about $66," O'Malley Greenburg writes. "With the added exposure from the Super Bowl, he could easily push prices closer to the $120 average of his halftime show predecessor, Beyonce."

Behind the Scenes with Stars at the Super BowlFebruary 03, 2014 ET's Rob Marciano was behind-the-scenes at the Super Bowl and caught up with the stars who were on hand for the big game. Rob interviewed celebs as they arrived at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, and was on the field during the game and halftime show performance with Bruno Mars. While Bruno didn't stop to do interviews after the show, his brother, Eric Hernandez, did speak about the performance that also included the Red Hot Chili Peppers. "The reality is this is the biggest stage ever. So we all knew that, but we had to treat it as it's a normal show," Eric said. "We trained for it, we've been out here for a week, we played out there in the cold... I think we pulled it off today, it feels really good."
