I thought all the songs were performed well, but RHCP didn't really fit there (there was suddenly so much more testosterone on stage, you know?). In some sense, they also upstaged him by playing one of the most recognizeable hits of the 25 years. Bruno's currently best known for "Locked Out Of Heaven", and it was almost as if he just wanted to get that song out of the way so that he could do those other numbers.

Wow. I think I paid $35.00 per ticket to see him & Janelle Monae on the Hooligans in Wondaland tour.

Such a nice show y'all

LOVED the drum kit, loved everything literally

I wished RCHP were there longer and I wished they'd make a more coherent stage appearance but oh well them Chili Peppers are too funky they can't stop (Flea played bass like hard!!)

The best Super Bowl since Prince & Springsteen. No other show can come THIS close. I'm so glad it paid off, his albums are now on TOP and every one is admitting his talent & musicanship.

WELL DONE Kitty, nice coverage wink

Thanks Shawy! smile

Another rave review!

Bruno Mars Gets One-Sided Super Bowl Bouncing With Biggest Hits

Bruno Mars Gets One-Sided Super Bowl Bouncing With Biggest Hits

The game? A Dud. But Bruno and the Red Hot Chili Peppers score with an energetic halftime spectacle

Bruno Mars likes a party, whether it's his infectious performances at various awards shows ("Get off your rich asses and let's have some fun!" he told the crowd at the 2012 GRAMMYs) or a carefully crafted reputation for having a wide-ranging, genre-busting live show.

The Music of Super Bowl XLVIII: Full Coverage
Bruno's Halftime: 7 Takea... the Field

On Sunday night, he played arguably his biggest party yet, headlining the halftime show at this year's Super Bowl between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks in East Rutherford, N.J.

Shedding the spectacle for the most part, Mars was all business from the start. After an opening featuring the chorus of Travie McCoy's Bruno-featuring "Billionaire" sung by a chorus of children, hands joined and thrown up in the air (sometimes), the singer appeared behind an instrument many may not be accustomed to seeing him play: a drumset.

However, as evidenced during his GRAMMY performance with B.o.B. and Janelle Monae three years ago, Mars is actually a fairly formidable drummer -- "I don't like that Bruno Mars is a better drummer than I am," Superchunk and The Mountain Goats' Jon Wurster tweeted -- acting as a nice pump-up moment as a precursor to the high-energy antics that followed.

First song? Why not "Locked Out of Heaven," the first single from "Unorthdox Jukebox," Mars' most recent album? Donning slick suits to coordinate with the singer's suave getup, his backing band -- a flurry of horns, stringed instruments, keys and drums -- pranced onstage to fill out the smaller, triangular stage setup placed around midfield on one sideline.

More Super Bowl

The allure of Bruno Mars' placement as a Super Bowl halftime performer stemmed predominantly from his ability to shapeshift from one type of singer to another, shedding one genre and adding another with relative ease. The same was true Sunday night, as the pop star moved seamlessly from the Police-esque bounce of "Locked Out of Heaven" to the Earth Wind & Fire-repping "Treasure," Mars breaking out some hip-swiveling Motown moves while his band jived gleefully behind him.

"Treasure" wasn't even completely over and done with before -- boom -- out rolled "Runaway Baby," a toe-tapping staple from debut album "Doo-Wops & Hooligans." The high-tempo, guitar- and horn-fueled number again featured Mars' quick footwork, the band's dark silhouettes splayed in front of a glowing white background. "A little bit softer now," he began repeating, referencing "Shout" as the band took the volume down low before jumping back into a rollicking rendition of the tune -- that is, until he changed course again, rapping the words "give it away, give it away, give it away now" as some special guests rose from below the stage.

Everyone knew the Red Hot Chili Peppers would be performing with Mars at the Super Bowl; it just wasn't unclear whether the band would be performing its own material or merely acting as Mars' funk soul brothers on one of his own numbers. With the utterance of "give it away," it was suddenly clear: the pop chameleon was going to make another change, this time into early '90s funk rock territory.

Dressed exactly as one would expect them -- think a shirtless and short-wearing Anthony Kiedis, for instance -- the Chili Peppers burst into "Give It Away," Bruno and his Hooligans backing the rockers on all accounts. Kiedis and bassist Flea took center stage immediately, while guitarist Josh Klinghoffer wildly spun and leapt around the small stage -- whether he was soloing or not -- and Chad Smith drummed away with Mars' drummer for a two-pronged percussive attack. It was a beautiful mess onstage, musicians weaving in and out of each other (oftentimes narrowly avoiding Klinghoffer's high-flying antics).

But "Give It Away" wasn't the rollicking finale of Mars' first halftime show. Soon after, the telecast cut away to various videos of members of the military saying hello and dedicating the final song to their loved ones, while the opening lines of "Just the Way You Are" -- Mars' first solo hit -- started up.

The finale was a nice, touching moment, and a definite mid-tempo breather from the blink-and-you'll-miss-it, energetic showcase that had preceded it. Mars made his way onto the field, crooning the love song while fireworks exploded in the background.

The halftime performance highlighted a particularly one-sided affair; at halftime, Seattle led Denver 22-0, the latter being the first team to be shut out in the first half of the game in 13 years.

I think Prince's show was better because his songs were stronger (both originals and covers) and he wasn't pushed aside to a being a cheerleader while another band raised the level.

I think if Bruno Mars had enough weighty songs and song choices and also developed his own image instead of an exact thorwback homage of something from the James Brown/Four Tops type show era (Prince tried this, but made it his own during the Parade tours).

But Bruno Mars was certainly better than almost any other young act that has played the halftime. Maybe they'll learn to have real musicians/live performers (I thought the Madonna's halftime was weak).

It's curious how close Janelle Monae and Bruno Mars are in their retro performance style.

Super Bowl 2014: Bruno Mars stands — and delivers — in halftime show

Review: Young charmer Bruno Mars brings fresh energy to familiar styles during his brief but snapped-tight set. Too bad L.A.'s own Red Hot Chili Peppers crashed the stage.

The question dominated much of the nonfootball-related chatter in the run-up to Sunday's Super Bowl: As the featured act of this year's halftime show, was Bruno Mars really up to the job of entertaining a television audience of approximately 100 million people?

The answer, it turned out, was yes. But before he could prove it, Mars had to weather a storm of skepticism.

He's only 28, decades younger than other artists who've played the show recently, such as Prince and the Rolling Stones. And Mars has released only two albums, a puny songbook compared to the deep troves of Bruce Springsteen and the Who.

The singer himself seemed to acknowledge his inexperience at a news conference last week, saying the call to perform "definitely came soon" in his career. (Wary of arming his naysayers, he quickly added, "I ain't scared.")

Yet after several halftime extravaganzas touched by controversy — including the appearance of M.I.A.'s middle finger during Madonna's 2012 show and last year's performance by Beyoncé, who just weeks prior had caused an uproar by lip-synching at President Obama's second inauguration — it's easy to see why the National Football League chose Mars to headline Sunday's halftime show at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

An old-fashioned charmer with old-fashioned talent, Mars is probably the most wholesome star in Top 40 pop right now, not to mention the one whose skill set most readily overlaps with that of the legends of yesteryear. He's not afraid to sing about sex, but he's also deeply unlikely to flash any skin — a reassuring prospect to NFL brass still haunted by a glimpse of Janet Jackson's nipple 10 years ago.

But there's another reason why Mars, despite his youth, was actually a safe bet for the year's most-watched television spectacle: Onstage, this former pint-sized Elvis impersonator delivers — every single time.

He began his roughly 12-minute set at the Super Bowl hammering away by himself behind a drum kit, as if to tell viewers — particularly those unacquainted with his radio hits — that they were in the hands of a real musician.

And so they were: Before long, Mars' touring band, a great funk-soul combo in the tradition of the O'Jays or Earth, Wind & Fire, had joined the singer for snapped-tight renditions of the reggae-tinged "Locked Out of Heaven" and the R&B throwback "Treasure," each a lively demonstration of how much fresh energy Mars brings to familiar styles.

He called back even more explicitly in a zippy take on his song "Runaway Baby," dropping in bits of James Brown's signature footwork and a few lines from the Isley Brothers' "Shout."

Was it hopelessly retro compared to Beyoncé's bold electro-pop display? Sure. But with its live-wire electricity, the performance didn't feel that way.

Or at least it didn't until Red Hot Chili Peppers showed up.

Reportedly invited by Mars himself (though it's hard to imagine that the NFL didn't encourage their presence), the long-running L.A. rockers crashed the stage Sunday for a stale "Give It Away" that added zero to the proceedings — unless you count the disheartening sight of a bunch of white guys crowding out a bunch of black guys from their own gig.

Thankfully, the Chili Peppers vacated the premises quickly, in time for Mars to wrap up his set with his delicate "Just the Way You Are," peppered here with video dedications from servicemen and women to their loved ones.

Singing beautifully and with the precision of a lifer, Mars performed the song standing in a pool of light on a small platform at the 50-yard line, all alone, just like he'd begun. He didn't need anything — or anyone — else.

Bruno Mars Scores Most-Watched Super Bowl Halftime Show Ever

By Phil Gallo, Los Angeles | February 03, 2014 4:22 PM EST

Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers Perform at Super Bowl XLVIII on Feb. 2, 2014 in New Jersey

Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' performance attracted the largest audience in the history of Super Bowls, attracting 115.3 million viewers, Fox announced Monday, citing Nielsen data.

That figure surpasses the prior record of 114.0 million set by Madonna two years ago and the 110.8 million who tuned in to see Beyonce last year.

More on the Super Bowl

Mars sang "Give it Away" with the Peppers, executed James Brown dance moves and Police riffs and closed with his hit ballad "Just the Way You Are" at halftime of a blowout won by the Seattle Seahawks, 43-8. The game had an average viewing audience of 111.5 million viewers, the largest in history.

The final number was significantly higher than than 98.88 million viewers reported in the overnight ratings from Nielsen that measure the top 56 markets. It initially appeared Super Bowl XLVIII would be the fifth most-watched in history.

The one musician who may well have received the most exposure for new music is Prince, who guest-starred on "New Girl" immediately after the game. The episode, watched by nearly 26 million viewers, included a performance of his new song "PretzelBodyLogic."

Demand And Prices For Bruno Mars Tickets Skyrocket After Super Bowl Performance

After a season of buildup and two weeks of feverish hype, Super Bowl XLVIII was never really a game. From the first snap, the Broncos seemed disoriented and over-matched. By halftime the game was over, and the only thing to look forward to was the halftime show. Along with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bruno Mars delivered a half-time show for the ages that is dominating Monday water-cooler conversations across the country. In addition to bringing a bit of excitement to the otherwise lame Super Bowl, the performance may go down as one of the savviest marketing campaigns in the history of music.

Not at all coincidentally, Bruno Mars tickets to his upcoming tour went on sale this morning with Super Bowl buzz still ringing in over 100 million ears across the country. As a result, the market for Bruno Mars tickets is on fire. Since this morning, the average price for his Moonshine Jungle Tour is up $150 to an average price of $500. While there are some tickets left on the primary market for select shows, many are already sold out. Ticketmaster also seem to be struggling to keep with demand, and had to switch from their interactive seating maps for most events, including Bruno Mars Madison Square...en tickets.

2014 saw some impressive uses of big events for self-promotion. Miley Cyrus in particular stood out for her provocative performance at MTVs Video Music Awards. With an audience of 10 million tuning in, it served her purpose to perfection and was a shotgun graduation ceremony from Hanna Montana to Miley Cyrus. In part becuase of the VMAs, Miley Cyrus tickets for her upcoming tour are a hot item. Despite the hype engine that Miley has built, however, she’s still not sold out for many of the dates on her Bangerz tour.

Mars’ Super Bowl showcase generated a reported 2.2 million tweets, and Twitter has not stopped this morning, with a legion of existing and newly-discovered fans clamoring for tickets to the tour, which kicks off in full in the U.S. on May 23rd. The price for tickets on the primary market ranges from $49-$100 for most shows. Bigger city shows like Madison Square Garden have prices that range from $70 to $181. For shows at big venues like Madison Square and TD Garden, the average prices on the secondary market is north of $600 with the cheapest tickets going for $150, or approximately double the face price. At those prices, Mars upcoming tour ranks amongst the most expensive in the country this summer, ahead of One Direction tickets andJason Aldean tickets, which are two of the highest prices for an American tours this spring and summer.

As for Cyrus, the average price for her first two shows of the Bangerz tour are down 6% this week and the cheapest ticket for the second show in Anaheim can be had for $33. While the buzz generated from Miley’s hype seems to be wearing off a bit just as her tour gets set to start, it’s unlikely Bruno Mars will suffer a similar downturn. Whether it was his opening drum solo at the Super Bowl half-time show or his recent Grammy win for best pop vocal album for Unorthodox Jukebox, it’s clear that Mars is a real talent, a gifted performer and here to stay.

It would be awesome if the Peppers get ont he hot 100 from the exposure.. and Prince razz

What Bruno Mars' Super Bowl Show Means For His Earnings

Unlike the players who took the field for the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos at last night’s Super Bowl, halftime performer Bruno Mars won’t be paid for his efforts–as is the custom at the year’s biggest entertainment event.

“No appearance fee,” confirms NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy. “Same as always.”

For the Super Bowl’s halftime acts, payment comes in the form of exposure–and in the case of Bruno Mars, the dividends should be both considerable and long-lasting. The 28-year-old Hawaiian wowed the audience at MetLife MET -4.06% Stadium and more than 100 million at home with a set that included a dazzling drum solo and a few gravity-defying dance moves in addition to his singing.

“The halftime performance at the Super Bowl is the single most important live appearance an artist can make,” says Gary Bongiovanni, president and editor-in-chief of concert data outfit Pollstar. “And with the pressure on, Bruno Mars crushed it. I would not be surprised if he more than doubled his number of fans overnight.”

Like the legendary acts who’ve played the halftime show before him, he’ll undoubtedly see a bump in record sales–Beyoncé’s album
4 got a 59% boost from her performance in New Orleans last year, while Madonna’s back catalog surged 410% in the wake of her halftime show the year before.

But Mars stand to gain the most financially from the bump in earnings from concert ticket sales as his Moonshine Jungle tour rolls on. In 2013, the singer grossed $72.4 million on 84 shows; his average ticket price sits at about $66. With the added exposure from the Super Bowl, he could easily push prices closer to the $120 average of his halftime show predecessor, Beyoncé.

“I think the exposure and the favorable comments cannot help but catapult him into one of the highest earners in the business,” says veteran entertainment attorney Owen Sloane.

The display could also lay the groundwork for Mars to make the jump from being an arena act to becoming a stadium act in just as short a time as it took for him to go from the club circuit to the Super Bowl.

In other words, Mars, who has never cracked FORBES’ list of the wor... musicians, appears well on his way to doing so. A double-digit million-dollar payday should be on the horizon as Super Bowl viewers flock to the singer’s shows this spring and summer.

It will, of course, be hard to know what portion of Mars’ ticket sales are the direct result of his performance at the big game. The weekly singles and alums charts, not to mention increases in Twitter and Facebook followers, will tell a clearer story in the meantime.

At any rate, it seems safe to say that agreeing to play the Super Bowl–despite the fact that there’s no performance fee involved–was an excellent move. For Mars it was perhaps an even better one than for the more established superstars who preceded him.

Says Bongiovanni: “Unlike nearly all the acts that have played the slot before him, his best days are still ahead of him.”
