Here's Why Bruno Mars Is Not Being Paid To Perform At The Super Bowl Halftime Show

Come Sunday, Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers will join the ranks of Madonna, Beyoncé, U2, and Paul McCartney as part of an exclusive list of musicians who have performed during the Super Bowl halftime show.

"We just got that phone call and they started scoping me out," 28-year-old "Grenade" singer Mars told Forbes of how he got the coveted gig. "They were coming to my shows and they popped the question. It’s one of those things where I feel like it’s early on in my career, but … it’s definitely something on a bucket list. It’s the biggest stage ever. It’s something you’re not gonna say no to."

It's not something a musician says no to, despite not getting paid.

"We do not pay," NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy told Forbes last year. "We cover all expenses associated with the performance."

The accompanying expenses, however, can add up.

Travel, lodging, setup, fees for backup dancers and musicians, pyrotechnics, glam squads, etc., can all balloon to millions of dollars.

But Mars’ big payment will come in the form of exposure.

"He’ll be playing what amounts to a 12-minute commercial for himself, which should boost sales for concert tickets, albums and merchandise," reports Forbes, who confirmed Mars, like his predecessors, will not be paid for this year's Super Bowl. "For context, a 30-second ad costs about $4 million this year."

Marc Ganis, president of the consultancy Sportscorp, Ltd., further explains, "This is the kind of exposure that entertainers would give their right arm for … they could do 20 Leno and Letterman appearances and still not reach that [kind of] audience."

But after Beyoncé's mindblowing Destiny's Chi...erformance during last year's Super Bowl halftime show, why did the NFL choose Mars, a relative newbie?

"One of the answers is there aren’t that many acts like that," says Ganis. "And the NFL has been going through most of them. You don’t want to recycle. If you’re going to look outside that limited sphere, Bruno Mars is a pretty good selection."

The NFL also trusts that Mars won't have any wardrobe malfunctions.

Ganis explains that Mars’ performance at the 2011 NBA All-Star Game pre-show "earned him a reputation in the sports world as a reliable entertainer, something that’s crucial to the NFL after halftime mishaps like Janet Jackson’s infamous 'Nipplegate' incident" in 2004.

Super Bowl 2014: Drew University, Seton Hall students part of Bruno Mars' half-time show

MADISON — Add Drew University's women's lacrosse team and students from Seton Hall University to the list of New Jersey students slated to appear on the field during Bruno Mars' Super Bowl half-time show.

Julia Steier, the Drew team's head coach, said 20 of the 21 members of the women's lacross team will be on the field during the show. But she declined to give many specifics because of a confidentiality agreement with the NFL, which is trying to keep details of the half-time show secret.

“Everybody was so excited,” Steier said. “It’s a once in a lifetime chance.”

Steier said students from Seton Hall University in South Orange are also participating in the half-time show.

The Star-Ledger previously reported members of at least five New Jersey high school marching bands are also participating in the half-time show, though participants have not been able to say much under the strict secrecy rules set by the NFL.

Students from Nutley, Morris Knolls and Sparta high schools will be among the marching bands on the field, though they will not have their instruments, The Star-Ledger reported.

The Drew lacrosse team will not be wearing their team uniforms, Steier said. No other Drew students are participating in the show.

Word about Drew's involvement began to leak out on the Madison campus today. The team was selected to participate in the Super Bowl performance though an application process, campus officials said.

“The athletic department is honored that one of our sports teams was selected to attend the Super Bowl half-time show,” said Vincent Masco, Drew's associate athetic director. “We think it’s a great opportunity for them.”

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are expected to perform with Mars. The students have attended rehearsals with Mars, but are forbidden to talk about them, Drew officials said.

Several other New Jersey student groups are involved in other parts of the Super Bowl. The Rutgers University Marching Scarlet Knights are scheduled to open the pre-game festivities with the Syracuse University Marching Band.

Members of the New Jersey Youth Chorus are also slated to back up New Jersey native Queen Latifah as she sings "America the Beautiful" before the start of the game.

It's Super Bowl eve and the halftime show is less than 24 hours away. I am very excited for this performance! I know Bruno is going to bring the place down when he performs. biggrin

My prediction is this: A lot of people's minds will be changed tomorrow night and Bruno will gain new fans. After his performance, people will look at Bruno in a whole different light than what they did before. His critics will be (or at least should be) silenced and they will have to give him his props. He's already famous, but this will take his fame to a whole new level. Folks who have been sleeping on this guy will wake up and realize that he is a bona fide super star.

An artist in the true sense of the word.

The REAL DEAL.

Bruno Mars being chosen as the headlining Halftime show performer is no mistake. They knew what they were doing when they chose him. He may still be somewhat of a newbie fame-wise, but Bruno has been working and preparing for this his whole life. He's worked hard and paid his dues in show business, and NOTHING was freely handed to him. He deserves this opportunity and every bit of success, fame and accolades he gets. He's got what it takes to make this halftime show one of the most memorable and most talked about shows in the history of halftime shows. Its his time to really shine and show the world what all he's capable of--and its time for the people who have underestimated, doubted, or straight up hated on him to recognize that he is a truly gifted, very talented, musician/singer/live performer. A legend in the making.

Bruno is gonna slay,

People are gonna learn that day,

That Bruno don't play

And that he's here to stay!

So prepare yourselves to be blown away wink

And to give some of you unfamiliar with Bruno's talent a taste of what you may see tomorrow at haltime, check out this footage of Bruno jamming on the guitar in a recording studio. From 2008!

BRUNO MARS SET TO ROCK SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW

Posted on January 30, 2014 at 9:32 pm.

The weather might be hovering around the freezing point for the Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show, but Bruno Mars and his band are sure to warm things up with one of his trademark scorching performances.

Mars will take the stage for the Feb. 2 showcase along with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, following in the footsteps of artists like Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen, Prince and Tom Petty who have rocked the Super Bowl crowd in recent years.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Mars said at a recent pre...appearance. “We were all watching last year with Beyonce, and we all wondered, ‘What if we got the call to do that?’ It definitely came soon, and we’re just honored. Some greats have come across that stage, and we’re just excited that we’re getting the shot.”

Mars would not tip his hand as to what his performance will hold, but after a few days of rehearsals at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., he noted that he would have a lot to get used to leading up to show time.

“You never really know what to expect,” Mars said with a laugh. “Like the microphone turns into a popsicle, so there are things like that you don’t expect.”

Fender.com recently caught up with Mars’ bassist Jamareo Artis at the 2014 NAMM Show, and he seemed confident that the cold would not be a major factor.

“I’ve heard all about the weather, and I’ve been asked about it a lot,” Artis said. “But I’m going to be warm before I hit the stage. For a show like this, I’m sure we’ll have a dressing room to get ready. And we’ll have some instruments in there to warm our fingers up.

“I’m an active guy, so I’ll be jumping around before I get on stage, so by the time I hit the stage, I won’t be worrying about my fingers freezing up. I’m going to be ready to go. I’m too excited, anyway.”

As for the Chili Peppers, drummer Chad Smith joked in an interview with Artisan New Services that the band would attempt to cover Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused.”

Regardless of what Mars and the Chili Peppers decide to do, Sunday’s halftime show promises to be must-see viewing.

Just don’t ask anyone to pick between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks.

“I’m not normally a big football guy, but since I’m there, I’m going to be a big football fan,” Artis laughed. “Look, whichever team wins, that’s who I’m going to be rooting for!”

One thing is certain. Fender fans can expect to see some killer instruments during the act.

Mars’ guitarist Phred Brown will play a modified Cabronita Telecaster with a Black and Aztec Gold Sunburst finish, while Artis will feature a gold sparkle American Vintage 1963 Precision Bass. In addition, Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer is expected to rock his pink Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster.

“Classic showmanship in the vein of James Brown and Michael Jackson is alive and well, and Bruno Mars is here to prove it. Mars takes the stage with The Hooligans, a tightly choreographed nine-piece soul band that serves as the perfect representation of his commitment to the live experience – a commitment that led to his selection as the halftime performer at Super Bowl XLVIII. A classic song-and-dance man and multi-platinum selling pop star, Mars references everyone from Prince to The Police in both his image and sound, but the result is more than mere imitation; as a songwriter and producer, he has successfully combined the sounds of his pop idols with reggae and hip hop to create a new generation of genre-crossing hits."

EDITORIAL: WHY YOU SHOULD BE EXCITED FOR BRUNO MARS’ SUPERBOWL HALFTIME PERFORMANCE

If you follow me on twitter (or tumblr…if so, please accept my apology now…), it’s no secret that I’m a HUGE Bruno Mars fan. From his quiet success to the pure talent and musicianship that he possesses, I’m in love with his ability to take his relatively short roster of music and make me feel like I’m at an Earth,Wind and Fire concert two stepping my life away, all while possessing some of the greatest hair this world has ever been blessed with.

Not only has he reached massive commercial success with his music, including his hits “Just the Way You Are”, “Grenade”, “Locked Out of Heaven”, and “When I Was Your Man”, he continues to sell out his worldwide tour; grossing over $2.4 Million in it’s 6-month run, while securing another worldwide tour this year. All while locking down Billboard’s Artist of the Year honor for 2013 and becoming the second best selling male artist of the year with his critically acclaimed album “Unorthodox Jukebox”. And this has only been with the last four years!

Sounds impressive right? With all of these credentials listed, why is it that most of the country is indifferent to his upcoming performance on one of America’s biggest stages? Some would argue that Mars lacks that certain appeal that makes him interesting the public eye (i.e., no major love scandals, no legal drama unless you count that one time in Vegas). Many reasons have been given by the public as to why Bruno Mars isn’t the man for the Superbowl Halftime performance, including his lack of time in the industry, his lowkey appearance in the media, and his height (yeah, I don’t get it either.)

But what really surprised me, is that most people think he’s boring, and that my friends, couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s really quite a shame that most of the mainstream hasn’t quite seen the potential that Mars possesses. This is a guy that focuses solely on his music and perfecting his craft, which has come to be severely under appreciated during this age of snappy one hit wonders and viral youtube video singers, and has become massively successful without the need for gimmicks.

The shows feature his amazing band, The Hooligans, which consist of all of the singers friends and family. What is to be liked about Bruno is not only his ability to put together a great show, but the fact that he has his band front and center at all times, showcasing their many talents and how well they all work together.

When Mars’ mother, Bernadette, unexpectedly passed away right before he was set to embark on a major worldwide tour, it was unclear what the future held for the talented performer. He managed to overcome that feat; selling out nearly every show on his roster, with many reviewers calling it one of the greatest shows they’ve seen in a long time; comparing him to likes of James Brown, Prince, and Michael Jackson. With all of this said, what can we expect for this Sunday’s performance of a lifetime?

Well, if you’re looking for big props and ridiculous choreography from such acts like Beyonce and Michael Jackson, I’m going to tell you right now, you’re going to be disappointed. What you will find, however, is a show from an artist that is celebrating the music and the art of performance — without the need for over the top spectacle. My only recommendation to you is to be prepared for something that you aren’t used to — and to dance your way into oblivion. Oh and one more thing — ….that voice!!

Get hyped for the slayage! Check out one of my favorite performances from Bruno Mars below and be sure to come back tell us your thoughts on Sunday’s performance!

Now THAT Ladies and Gentlemen, is how you put on a live performance! Bruno did what he does best and showed folks what me and his fans have known all along.

BRUNO. IS. THE. REAL. DEAL.

People learned something today cuz class was in session with Professor Mars teaching nod

Who did last year's halftime show? Anyone remember? bored2

I was on another messageboard immediately following the halftime performance cuz I wanted to see people's reactions especially from those who doubted Bruno.

Lets just say that Bruno did in fact gain some new fans and folks talking about going to buy tickets to his tour which go on sale tomorrow. Some of them critics admitting they were wrong about Bruno and giving him his due props for slaying this halftime show.

TOUCHDOWN! woot! woot! woot! woot!
