it kinda sucks doesn't it?

That setlist seems too predictable. Why does she always insist on playing tired songs like "Music" and "Vogue",instead of bringing out stuff like "Causing A Commotion","Angel" and "Dress You Up"?? Surely, she's got to be bored with "Music" by now?!! nuts I'm sure that the show will be great, but it's a shame that won't bring out some surprising, rare songs that she hasn't performed in years.

Yeah I don't think I trust this setlist. I don't want to know the setlist prior to seeing the show anyway.

The big reason I don't trust these setlists is that little nudge she did to Physical Attraction during that Jimmy Fallon interview.

I like those less performed songs too, but she has to do the big iconic hits for the more casual fans. If she did the lesser hits too, she wouldn't have room for all the new songs she wants to do. I don't think she could do a whole concert of new songs and less well known hits like Causing a Commotion, Angel etc. without casual fans getting angry and feeling disappointed. She could do those but she'd have to cut way back on the new stuff which she doesn't want to do.

Madonna is at once a brilliant cunning cunt of a business woman and a totally out of touch, self sabotaging artist these days, but this has almost always been the case when it comes to her setlists for her tours.

Did anyone ever go see MJ post "Thriller" and NOT hear "Billie Jean?"

Does anyone go to an arena show of Prince's and NOT hear "Purple Rain" or at the very least, "Kiss?"

Has Tina ever NOT given us "Private Dancer," "What's Love" and "Proud Mary?"

Do the Rolling Stones skip "Satisfaction" or does Aerosmith not do at least "Sweet Dreams" OR "Cryin?"

Do "The Eagles" keep the fans paying top dollar guessing if they will sing "Hotel California?"

And yet, save for her very first tour, where she had only TEN or so hits, she has never gotten it right. The production, dancing, exciting new arrangements, cohesive flow of the themes in a show, tightness of technical effects -- all unmatched by any other pop star before or since. Her precision and the excitement of hearing songs she MIGHT sing are unmatched. In a way it's brilliant. But it's complicated by a couple of things. 1) She doesn't seem to keep the fans in mind AT ALL when putting together these setlists. She puts her setlists together like an independent filmmaker who doesn't care if the audience enjoys the films. 2) Ticket prices. She charges an arm, a leg, and your first born's DNA for the loge section, yet there is never a guarantee you will hear "Material Girl" or "Vogue" or "Like A Prayer" or "Ray of Light" or "Hung Up" or "Like A Virgin" even if it's your first and only time seeing her. 3) There are major NUMBER ONE, TOP 5, TOP 10, and international HITS that have NEVER BEEN PERFORMED ON TOUR - UNACCEPTABLE ("Take A Bow" - which I could live without - though many hardcore fans could not - "The Power of Goodbye," "Rescue Me," et al) - not to mention the album track, hardcore fan FAVORITES (she has to know "Erotica" is universally the most loved album) - yet we have never seen "Promise To Try," "Waiting," "Where Life Begins," "To Have and Not to Hold," "Til Death Do Us Part," "Thief of Hearts," etc live at a Madonna show.

Her 2nd tour even omitted (in a relatively young catalogue) signature hits like "Borderline" and "Everybody." Blond Ambition ditched "Dress You Up," "Who's That Girl," "Lucky Star," "Burning Up" for the likes of "Where's the Party" and "Now I'm Following You - Parts 1 AND 2." Then once came "The Girlie Show" - forget it - even "Into the Groove" and "Like A Prayer" were out. And the perhaps most universally loved by the fans number from "Erotica" ("Bad Girl") was left out. Then DWT, for which many fans my age in the US was the first time to see her, and her first time playing most US markets in 11 years, gave us only TWO songs from "Bedtime Stories" and TWO 80s hits. Granted it was a killer show, but why would such a smart capitalist shoot herself in the foot that way? Had Caresse not convinced her to do a "Greatest Hits" tour in the wake of anger over DWT's setlist and in the face of the "AL" album flopping - and by "Greatest Hits" I mean a show that still included a cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" but ignored "Live to Tell," and included something called "The Lament" from "Evita" - her touring career could have died. How this attitude toward her audience has not left her playing Performing Arts Centers and Casinos a la Cyndi Lauper baffles me. Don't get me wrong, I loved the "Confessions" tour - one of her greatest achievements - and the album was killer. But TEN songs from the new album. TEN!? As evidenced by how many US ticket buyers even bothered to redeem the copy of MDNA album which they already PAID for inadvertantly and unknowingly, this is not an artist from whom anyone outside the fan base is anticipating anything new. By putting 9-10 new tracks of the new album into the new show, she thinks she is staying 'current' but she betrays her casual and most loyal fans and her own legacy time and again - not to mention her pocketbook - by giving us "The Devil Wouldn't Recognize You" and "You Must Love Me" - if Madonna were actually known for giving killer shows AND PLAYING THE HITS - hell, even in a rotating fashion - "Vogue" and "Express Yourself" last time, "Music" and "Lucky Star" the next time - plus everything from "Causing A Commotion" to "Keep it Together" to even "Nothing Really Matters" - and 5 or 6 or 7 songs AT MOST from the current album (7 if the album is an actual commercial HIT) - I think as spectacular as her ticket sales are, there wouldn't be ONE ticket still unsold!

Meanwhile, as for the strategy of the album / tour / WE / perfume / clothing line / gyms...this is all wrong. "W.E." - if she was going to insist on doing it - should not have been tied in with this era whatsoever. Negative reviews of yet another flopped movie whether as director or actress are not what she needed at this time. The one thing management did RIGHT was have her play the Superbowl and then go onsale right away with the tour. However, to get the most out of the new album, I would have pushed it back - even her chief collaborator William Orbit agrees. Much as I do like a lot of "MDNA" - it needed to sit and marinate. There is a GREAT pop record hidden inside a GOOD one. And "Gimme All Your Luvin" though i like it, was not the one. She should have not even bothered with a new single. She should have done a cheerleader remake of "Hung Up" - given us the bad ass Superbowl performance (albeit with more skin and sass), went onsale and done a tour with the songs the PEOPLE want to hear, WITHOUT A NEW ALBUM. Would have been sufficient to include the two newer cuts from "Celebration" (hell, she is anyway), "Masterpiece," and then it would have given her show room to breathe within her own KILLER, UNRIVALED pop catalog. Imagine if she were opening with "Deeper and Deeper" then gave us something underrated from "Hard Candy" ("She's Not Me") and then killed it with a one two three punch of "Physical Attraction" "Impressive Instant" and "Beautiful Stranger." Then pulled out the guitar (if she must) to pimp out "Masterpiece" (a great ballad) and maybe surprise us with "You'll See" or "Love Tried to Welcome Me," and yeah, do the remix of "Celebration" but also let the band jam out on a LIVE INSTRUMENTAL version of "Holiday" rather than another damn video screen interlude where she is being raped by the visuals of a mediocre art gallery in downtown LA. Imagine "Inside of Me" or "Swim" or a medley of "Spotlight" with "Everybody" and "Lucky Star" or some killer vocal harmonies of an a capella "True Blue" or even a killer raved up version of "Sky Fits Heaven" or a totally acid rock take on "Skin" or some of her ACTUAL GREAT SONGS OF THE 00s making the cut ("Get Together," "Sorry," the ORIGINAL version of "Hung Up," "Hollywood," "Love Profusion," "Nobody's Perfect," "Incredible," the Oakenfold version of "Give it 2 Me," et al).

She should have given the world a killer show and then at the height of tour mania in the US or Europe, dropped a new album. She's stuck in the old school way of album then tour - album then tour - but these other annoying business ventures also clearly take away from her being a great pop star. I would love to hear the unreleased 'breathtaking' songs William is talking about - and like Janet, like Erykah, like MJ - TAKE YOUR FUCKING TIME IN THE STUDIO! People are probably MORE likely to go to your damn show if they knew you DIDN'T have a new album to pimp. Reality. They would know they are going to hear the hits, the great past album cuts...

ok rant over. almost. why doesn't she just go out and give us a setlist that looks something like

Girl Gone Wild (Avicii remix)

But what you fail to understand is Madonna is a totally different type of performer than artists you name such as the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith and the Eagles. She does not just stand there and sing the songs in front of a band. Her shows are about elaborate set performances. So part of seeing her is the spectacle of what she does not any particular song. Madonna has had hit after hit, and unlike some other artists there is no one song that people associate with Madonna. In all her tours she has done at least a few of her most iconic songs. In the current set list, she is doing Vogue, Like a Virgin, Like a Prayer which are songs people immediately associate with her just like the songs you named by those other artists so I don't see your point at all.

I think you just are angry for the sake of it. It's funny that everyone is a musical expert and knows exactly what she should do. You say she should please her fans. But Madonna fans are such a diverse lot. You can never get two Madonna fans to agree on anything! What some fans love, others hate so there's no way she can please everyone. With a Madonna show, you have to accept she sees it like theatre, not a conventional show of just playing the hits although you will get some songs you know. You have to accept that's what she wants to do with her shows and go with the flow. She's not a jukebox who is just going to play what some fans want. I think Madonna's way of performing is unique and special and I hope she doesn't change to the conventional hits thing.

And where in the world do you get that Erotica is her most universally loved album? Personally, it's one of my least favorites and there are many Madonna fans agree, although some love it. What you are basically saying is Madonna should sing just the songs that are your own personal favorites as a command concert. That isn't going to happen.

Let's not get our panties in a bunch until opening night. I'm very skeptical of a setlist that has candy shop in it, Like a Virgin too.

William Orbit: Some of the Best Songs Created for Madonna’s MDNA Went to Chris Brown

UPDATE:
William Orbit tweeted afterwards…

The MDNA comments. I should not have said them publicly. I see that and I regret that I said online. Not fair to M.

William Orbit tweeted that there was a lively MDNA debate going on over at his Facebook page this afternoon.

William Orbit first posted an audio link of the first “Ray of Light” mix he did with Madonna after they recorded the vocals and, as he put it, “went berserk with his guitar”.
Have a listen…

He added that the guitar solo had been edited out later, because it was a little bit “unbridled” for the album.

A Madonna fan, Madonna Express Yourself, then mentioned what a lot of other Madonna fans are thinking: the lack of promo and the way the singles have been released, especially in the UK, have prevented MDNA to reach its full potential.

William Orbit responded…

I appreciate your analysis of the album release ‘strategy’ @Madonna Express Yourself. I wasn’t involved in its formulation in any way myself. All I will say is that certain thoughts about it that I see expressed online by committed fans such as yourself, were blindingly obvious to me from the very get go, well before the release. But I’m no Jimmy Iovine, with the ability to advocate my convictions forcefully, and as co-producer, co-writer etc am aware that it is not in my ‘job spec’.

But you won’t see me exactly jumping up and down with delight over the way that things have panned out. We were very pushed for time, due to a rather interesting and shall we just say, ‘traditional’ method of recording that the esteemed engineer Demo was partial to, and various pressing commitments that took up the artists limited time, such as perfume ranges and teen fashion contests and other such endeavours which are beyond my own limited understanding of pop star agendas.

The recording sessions for the six songs I did were hugely enjoyable for all of us. M was on form and better than ever with her singing and writing and musicality, and was having a great time. We had songs lined up that were breathtaking. You’ll hear some of them on Chris Brown’s new album, and they are the best ones, Kreayshawn’s (INCREDIBLE) new album, my own recently completed ‘Strange Cargo’ album. And some other surprising places. SNAPPED up by the artists concerned. Most of them, I believe, destined to become classics (let me know in a couple months wether you concur with that)

The team I assembled in NY for MDNA were, and are as good as it gets now. Writers and musicians and performers I picked because they take my breath away with their talent. And are totally of-the-moment in everything good that is going on in contemporary music at the moment. And usually hard to book because they are so in demand. And all of us fully committed to putting ourselves through extraordinary efforts to make MDNA the greatest album of the year.

But alas, the time wasn’t there. Great swathes of it taken up by the engineer and his assistant bouncing reverb tracks for hour after hour, night after night. Not to real tape or anything, where you could posit that there would be an advantageous sonic dividend (real tape can be magic) but all in the digital domain. A purely procedural thing. Although not a procedure I or any of my own colleagues in this game would want to squander time with.

I was just describing to a friend of mine, and whom I frequently work with Serban Ghenea (just look him up if you want to be awed) how it was done, and he thought I was kidding him!

There. I’ve said it. I did try to say it earlier but I must have not made the point with enough push, my way being to always say it with the music itself.

Over the years it’s become obvious to me that along with Madonna being the greatest pop artist of ALL time, her fan base are also the most ardent, cohesive, discerning and loyal fan base of any artist. Not saying that to blow smoke, is quite obviously true. Big respect. And long life to us all. And as you look at things in a ‘long term’ way (my way also) you always call it like you see it. And I’m with you on that too. Be honest and true, speak your heart and mind, and let the dust fall where it will.

So basically, i’d lie down in the mud if she didn’t want to get her shoes messed up (well, figuratively speaking, neither of us does a lot of Glastonbury mud tramping) it’s hard to be an effective knight when your hands are bound. I will submit to wisdoms that are possibly beyond my comprehension and that will play out to glory in the fullness of time. And get back to my own fervent canvas, and speak no more of the matter.

Oh, and if some bright spark at marketing central suggested a Hilary Clinton approach, ie, press ‘restart’ and get back in the studio for a couple weeks and do what they nowadays call a ‘re-pack’, I’d certainly put my hand up for that, whatever else I had going on. But realistically, there is only one person that could make that happen. And with the best songs in the world, and the best mixing, best ProToolsing, best team, best lyrics, best bananas, after this little screed I don’t suppose I should while away my hours staring at the phone! <img src=" /> But i feel better for saying all that. Debt free and not beholden. The thing about having little appetite for riches and fame, and no great tower of expectations, you haven’t got anything to be taken away. And having always been an outsider, outside in the cold, It’s always clear which way the wind is blowing. I was never inside any bubble long enough to forget how the wind blows, and changes, and ebbs and gusts, and dies away completely. As before a storm. And that a beautiful bubble might yield to even a the breeze from a humble fan.
