The First Look At Madonna's MDNA Tour Costumes

Madonna is set to vogue her way around the world on her MDNA concert tour, which kicks off Thursday in Tel Aviv — and she’s enlisted a cadre of designers to create an array of showstopping looks for the stage.

The Material Girl’s parade of costume changes includes outfits from longtime collaborators Jean Paul Gaultier and Jeremy Scott, shoes from Prada and Miu Miu and pieces from Alexander Wang. Dolce & Gabbana made suits for the band and background vocalists, Fausto Puglisi created menacing bandolier vests and rams head masks for the backup dancers and even J Brand whipped up custom-made jeans.

Bras and panties — including one heart-shaped style from Madonna’s new intimates line Truth or Dare — are incorporated into some numbers, as are shoes from the new Truth or Dare footwear line, at retail this fall. A somber, elegiac version of the usually peppy “Like a Virgin” will be sung by Madonna in an Agent Provocateur bra.

“It’s a real journey from the first act to the fourth, and the way she constructs her shows is like a theater piece,” said costume designer and stylist Arianne Phillips, who oversaw the entire wardrobe design for Madonna, her backup singers, musicians and 22 backup dancers. Scott, for his part, has been camped out in Tel Aviv this week, working till the last minute on some costumes.

The original Gaultier design is worn during the “Vogue” number and includes a white shirt, black

tie, opera-length black gloves and a rigid skeleton corset. The getup references the iconic pink bustier-with-pin-striped suit look the designer created for Madonna’s 1990 Blond Ambition world tour, widely considered a pinnacle of both of their careers.

“We played with the ideas of a suit and a corset. But the corset is now like a cage,” explained Gaultier. “What I have done this time is a nod to the conical bra corset of the Blond Ambition tour but reinterpreted in 3-D, in patent leather on the outside with metallic leather on the inside. It’s all about masculine and feminine, Madonna and Jean Paul Gaultier classics reinterpreted for 2012.”

The designer and Phillips also re-created some archival Gaultier pieces for Madonna’s dancers, as an homage to his long relationship with the iconic singer. Gaultier was also responsible for the kinky equestrian and “Saturday Night Fever”-inspired looks of Madonna’s 2006 Confessions tour, and she once walked his runway with her nipples exposed.

“I love Madonna. She is the only woman I have asked to marry me. She refused, of course,” added Gaultier. “But when she asked me to do a costume for her for this tour, I couldn’t refuse.”

Prada created high-heeled shoes for the male dancers in the gender-bending “Vogue” performance, which includes imagery of the Vogue magazine logo on massive video screens — similar to Madonna’s Super Bowl performance of the song, which was viewed by 117 million people.

“This show is epic and bigger than anything she’s done before. There are many more costume changes. We’re taking 700 shoes on the road. Madonna changes outfits seven or eight times and the dancers change 10 to 15 times, depending on the dancer,” said Phillips of the production, which includes multiple appearances on stage by two of Madonna’s children, Lourdes and Rocco, in supporting roles.

Prada has supplied custom-made shoes for many of Madonna’s previous tours, noted Phillips. “They have been generous for so many years. Her relationship with them is really special. Everything is specially made and they made some incredible high-heeled boots for the boys,” she added.

Phillips, who has done the costumes for Madonna’s four previous tours, designed a number of looks herself, delivering a wide range for her famously chameleonlike boss. The lineup veers from a forbidding Joan of Arc-inspired outfit fashioned from metal mesh and Swarovski Elements to a vernal, miniskirted majorette getup for the 53-year-old “Girl Gone Wild” singer.

“It’s inspired by a 1940s majorette and I was looking for something playful and fun,” explained Phillips.

Masks are a big component to many outfits, with dancers hiding their faces behind gargoyle and bunny guises. “The show explores the idea of stripping away layers of identity and discovering the layers of who you are,” said Phillips. There’s a menacing streak to some looks, with themes of violence explored in certain segments, which are accessorized with swords, guns, armor and holsters.

One designer missing from the MDNA tour roster is Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci, who designed the showboating Cleopatra-on-Mars outfit Madonna donned for her Super Bowl performance. Phillips attributed Tisci’s absence from the collaborator list to scheduling conflicts.

Madonna herself was closely involved with the show’s costume design, said Phillips, who was nominated for an Oscar for her work on Madonna’s film “W.E.” earlier this year. “This is her brainchild and her concept. We have a 15-year relationship and there’s a rhythm to how we collaborate. She’s very open-minded but she expects a lot,” she explained. “She’s always challenging herself and pushing herself constantly to learn new things and she pushes me further than I would myself. When you’re on the world stage with her, you really have to bring your A game.”

As for the media dustup this week when Madonna supposedly lobbed a grenade at Lady Gaga by mashing up her own “Express Yourself” with Lady Gaga’s allegedly reductive “Born This Way” in rehearsals, it wasn’t just a ploy for attention and it’s part of the permanent show. At the end of the song, Madonna throws in the line “She’s Not Me,” from her recent song of the same name.

“Whether it’s an homage or a smack in the face or just being funny, I don’t know,” said Liz Rosenberg, Madonna’s spokeswoman. “People can decide what it means. Madonna isn’t one to explain herself.”

Tel Aviv gig kicks off Madonna's MDNA world tour

TEL AVIV: U.S. pop icon Madonna will on Thursday launch her hotly-anticipated MDNA world tour with a show in Tel Aviv, kicking off a roadtrip of more than 80 countries in what will be her longest-ever stint on the road.

When she hits the stage at Ramat Gan stadium on Thursday night with what promises to be an eye-popping extravaganza, the 53-year-old Queen of Pop will be embarking on her ninth world tour, this time in support of her new album MDNA.

Announced in February, the tour -- Madonna's first first since her wildly successful "Sticky and Sweet" outing in 2008 and 2009 -- will move from Israel to Abu Dhabi and on to Europe and the Americas.

It is expected to draw to a close in early 2013 in Australia where the singer has not performed in more than 20 years.

Kicking off her latest tour in Israel was a natural choice for the Catholic-born singer who over the last decade has become deeply involved in the Jewish mystical tradition of Kabbalah, which has brought her to the Jewish state on a number of public and private visits.

She last performed in Israel in 2009 during her "Sticky and Sweet" tour, when she met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and visited the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem, the holiest site where Jews are allowed to pray.

Thursday evening's show at the Ramat Gan stadium, which has a capacity of 35,000, was completely sold out but a day ahead of the performance, the singer briefly met with members of the Palestinian-Israeli Peace NGO Forum and handed them 600 tickets.

"We spoke to her for a few minutes and we asked if she would say anything about peace," Peace Now's Yariv Oppenheimer told AFP, saying it was the forum's first-ever contact with the petit singer, who has largely steered clear of getting involved with political issues linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"She told us: I will say much more than a word about it."

Since she arrived in Israel late on Friday on an El Al flight from New York, Madonna has reportedly spent much of time rehearsing, praying or attending Kabbalah events.

Her partner Brahim Zaibat, a French-Algerian model in his 20s, also flew in with her as did her four children, Lourdes, Rocco, David and Mercy, with pictures of them enjoying the beach splashed across the newspapers.

The first full dress rehearsal reportedly took place on Monday night, with the ever-controversial songstress reportedly seen pointing a gun at the crowd, as her dancers writhe around with machine guns and rifles.

Four years ago, she was criticized by anti-gun groups after sporting a pair of Chanel shoes with heels shaped like pistols.

Another incident which caught the headlines was when one of her dancers called Lilou, tweeted a picture of himself at the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem's Old City in which he wrote: "Don't want to say Israel but Palestine."

The flashpoint compound, which is the third holiest site in Islam, is the former site of two Jewish Temples and revered as the most sacred place in Judaism.

More than 4,000 fans have flown into Israel to attend the concert, with each paying between $62 (50 euros) per ticket, up to $620 for a VIP package including a seat in the specially-constructed Diamond area which is part of the stage.

Produced by Israel's Shuki Weiss with Live Nation, the Tel Aviv show is reportedly said to have cost an estimated $3.9 million (3.1 million euros).

Ahead of her arrival, the Material Girl asked for the stadium to include sleeping accommodation for her and her family, a games area for her kids and a lounge in which she will be interviewed by US TV host Conan O'Brian, who has flown in specially, Israel's Haaretz newspaper reported.

The Tel Aviv show is reportedly said to have cost an estimated $3.9 million (3.1 million euros).

As for the outfits, Madge has reportedly enlisted an ever-impressive list of designers to suit and boot both her, her band and her dancers for the MDNA tour, including Jean Paul Gaultier, Jeremy Scott, Alexander Wang, Dolce & Gabbana, Fausto Puglisi and J Brand.

She will also be wearing Prada and Miu Miu shoes as well as footwear and lingerie from her Truth or Dare line, with her signature conical bra also set to make an appearance.

I loved the reworks Stuart Price made for Erotica, Like a Virgin and La isla bonita for the confessions tour. i thought the techno remakes of like a prayer and others from the sticky and sweet tour were kind of messy, but i really dug this candy shop remake. it suits her better. No wonder why sticky and sweet was a messy tour if hard candy was already a messy album. This sounds more like Madonna.
does anybody know what the name of that remix is? fortunately the incredible remix of erotica for the confessions tour got a decent studio version, which not happen to the other remixes/reworks of that tour. hope there`s a studio version remix of this candy shop version.

I loved the outfits of the block, she looks amazing, and the songs are pretty well performed too. Loved the mirror thing with human nature. so simple and so good. Human nature, stopping to think, is a great song, maybe it would fit more the erotica era than bedtime storie`s. it surely deserved to be on this setlist. It just got me that the songs are so short. vogue, a MF great song, has only 4 mins. I wish she`d explore more, at least this song.

Madonna wows fans in first time ever Gulf concert

US pop icon Madonna hit the stage running at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island stadium on Sunday in her first ever concert in the Gulf, days after launching a world tour in Israel.

An estimated 25,000 fans cheered and screamed as the Material Girl finally appeared on stage more than two hours late, wearing a skin-tight black outfit from her “Girl Gone Wild” album.

Sunday’s concert was the first of two Abu Dhabi performances. The second, announced after tickets for Sunday’s event sold out in hours, will be on Monday.

Brandishing an assault rifle during her hit Revolver, the superstar saluted the emirate of Abu Dhabi, the second stop in her MDNA world tour.

“Ladies and gentlemen… It’s too damn hot!” Madonna later told the audience who braved temperatures exceeding 30 degrees in the desert nation.

Tala and Omar Zaru, fans from Jordan, were also celebrating their 13th wedding anniversary and Omar’s 41st birthday.

“Celebrating our two special occasions with Madonna can’t be bettered,” said Tala.

Madonna began her much anticipated tour in Tel Aviv last week, calling from the stage for Middle East peace.

“As you know, the Middle East and all the conflict that occurs here and have been occurring for thousands of years, they have to stop,” she said. “You can’t be a fan of mine and not want peace in the world.”

“So start today — every single one of you, if there is peace here in the Middle East, there can be peace in the whole world.”

In Abu Dhabi, Omar Zaru was unimpressed.

“I wish I had the freedom to go there and see her. But I can’t because I am Palestinian and there is an occupation,” said Omar who comes from Ramallah in the West Bank.

Others appeared not bothered that she had performed in Israel, considered by most Arabs to be an arch-enemy.

“We are a peaceful people,” said Lebanese Patricia Chebli, 37.

“Culture is for everybody, so I don’t mind” that she went to Tel Aviv.

The tour — Madonna’s first since her wildly successful “Sticky and Sweet” outing in 2008 and 2009 — will move on to Europe and the Americas, with concerts planned in a total of 80 countries.

It is expected to end in early 2013 in Australia.

Le Pen's Front National to sue Madonna over swastika in video

France’s far-right Front National (FN) is planning to sue Madonna over a video that shows party leader and former presidential candidate Marine Le Pen with a swastika on her forehead. The video was shown at a concert the US-born singer gave in Tel Aviv on Thursday.

For the backdrop when she performed the song Nobody knows me in Tel Aviv, Madonna chose a video in which her face was collaged with a number of well-known individuals, ranging from Chinese leader Hu Jinatao to US politician Sarah Palin and from Pope Benedict XVI to Marine Le Pen.

In a split second Le Pen’s eyes and forehead appear with a swastika on them, before her whole face appears, followed by an image resembling Adolf Hitler.

The 53-year-old star is famous for provocative stunts, although less well-known as a commentator on French politics.

Contacted by the 20 Minutes freesheet, the FN said that Le Pen had not had time to watch the video on Friday because she was writing a speech for a rally in Paris that evening.

But a party official called it “incredible” and said that the party’s lawyer, Wallerand de Saint-Just, had been asked to look into what legal action could be taken over it.

“We’ll make money with the case we’re going to bring,” an anonymous source told 20 Minutes.

Le Pen said on Sunday that the party would be watching very closely to see if Madonna uses the video when she performs in Paris on the 14 July national holiday and in Nice on 21 August, without saying whether she will be taking legal action.

Nero to support Madonna on her North American MDNA tour this fall

London’s premiere dubstep duo NERO is pleased to announce that they will join one of the biggest tours of the fall: Madonna’s MDNA Tour. Nero, which is British-born producers, remixers, DJs, and artists Dan Stephens and Joe Ray, will open for The Material Girl on the North American leg of her eagerly anticipated tour in support of her most recent album, MDNA on select dates including New York’s Madison Square Garden, and Miami’s American Airlines Arena. Nero will open the show with a DJ set, featuring live vocals from Alana.

Nero recently appeared at Coachella, Sasquatch, and the Electric Daisy Carnival NYC festivals and is also set to perform several shows on this summer’s IDentity Festival, as well as at Lollapalooza in Chicago and Hard Summer Los Angeles in August. Please see below for all of Nero’s upcoming tour dates.

Nero has been touring all year in support of their debut album Welcome Reality, which was released by Cherrytree/Interscope Records in December to rave reviews from Spin, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Entertainment Weekly, and Billboard. With its thunderous bass, hail of house rhythms, lightning flashes of rave synths, and showers of guitar, the album “pulls dubstep toward the arena-pop spotlight without leaving its shadows behind,” as the New York Times put it in its review, while Billboard noted that Nero “comes off like a dubstep-powered pop band.”

Released in the U.K. in August 2011, Welcome Reality debuted at No. 1 and rapidly earned gold status, fueled by its singles “Innocence,” Guilt,” “Promises” (which also stormed straight to the top of the UK charts) and “Me and You,” which was the most played record on Radio 1 for three weeks in a row and is the first U.S. single from the album. The official video for the song has racked up more than 13 million plays on YouTube. Watch it here:

Madonna is 4th best selling singles act in the UK

The Beatles have been named the best-selling singles act of all time in the UK.

The legendary band beat Elvis Presley and Sir Cliff Richard to the number one placing, while Madonna and Michael Jackson completed the top five.

The specially commissioned Top 60 of the past 60 years from The Official Charts Company was broadcast by Tony Blackburn on BBC Radio 2 yesterday (June 4).

Rihanna was the most recent artist to make the top ten, beating Sir Elton John, Queen, ABBA and David Bowie completed the top ten, while Take That as a collective are higher than Robbie Williams at 15 and 22 respectively.

Lower down the chart, Britney Spears, Lady GaGa and Black Eyed Peas feature at 26, 28 and 32.

BBC Radio 2′s Head of Music Jeff Smith said: “This list is intriguing; Adele is missing and we’ve all forgotten just how huge artists such as Shakin’ Stevens, Boney M and UB40 were in the UK in the ’70s and ’80s.”

The Top 60 biggest selling singles acts of all time in the UK are:

01 THE BEATLES 21.9m
02 ELVIS PRESLEY 21.6m
03 CLIFF RICHARD 21.5m
04 MADONNA 17.6m
05 MICHAEL JACKSON 15.3m
06 ELTON JOHN 14.8m
07 QUEEN 12.6m
08 ABBA 11.2m
09 DAVID BOWIE 10.6m
10 RIHANNA 10.4m

etc.
