Because his reign has lasted so long and he hasn't had a major hit since "I'm A Flirt". "Love Letter" got a lot of acclaim but only went gold. "When A Woman Loves" was played on the radio every 5 minutes but peaked at 16 on the chart.

CB's "F.A.M.E." went gold too, but it also had 5 top ten singles and I don't think he's reached his apex yet. Unfortunately Kells' career is winding down.

How? Billboard recently named him the most successful R&B artist of the last 25 years.

and just because R. Kelly's last major hit was in 2007 doesn't mean he's not the King still. Most of the artists with honorific titles haven't had a hit in over a decade but they're still "King" or "Queen". Besides Love Letter went Gold in 2 months with little to zero promotion, not many artist can do that.

Exactly. lol That's not how it workss when it comes to these titles in music, as arbitrary as it all is. If it was Aretha, James, MJ, Shirley Caesar, etc etc all lost their "titles" a long time ago.

Johnny: Yo, Billy, James Brown can't be the Godfather of Soul, cause he ain't had a hit in decades. It's gotta be one of them dudes we hear on the radio on Saturday mornings." nod

Billy: Johnny, have you been taking your meds? Rremember what the doctor said, now." no no no!

I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

The honorary titles never change once bestowed. Unlike the King of Pop, the King of R&B rotates like Player of the Year. If it didn't the king would still be Marvin Gaye, or Sam Cooke or Nat "King" Cole, or somebody.

Ehhh FALSE. It doesn't. confused

Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke were never dubbed the "King of R&B". There were no R&B artists prior to R. Kelly dubbed "King of R&B". R. Kelly has been called by this honorary title since 12 Play and nothing has changed.

Did you just arbitrarily make that up? It sure sounds like you did. Google "the King of R&B" and see what you come up with. I guarantee you it will be more than R. Kelly.

No, I didn't. I know for a fact that Marvin and Sam were never dubbed "King of R&B". I googled the title and all I see is R. Kelly's name and pictures. Anymore questions? lol

I mean...

A recent poll:

The King Of R&B Is…

Yes, with a whopping 2602 votes cast in his favor, calculated by adding up the figures he accumulated in each of three categories provided, R. Kelly is That Grape Juice‘s King Of R&B!

With 14 studio albums, including the LP ‘R‘ which went 8x platinum in the US, there are very few who can deny the impact Robert Kelly has had on Pop culture.

Responsible for a number of the world’s most recognizable numbers, which include Aaliyah’s ‘Age Ain’t Nothin’ By A Number’ , Michael Jackson‘s ‘You Are Not Alone’ and Celine Dion‘s ‘I’m Your Angel’ , his work has gone onto inspire his contemporaries as well as his creative descendants Usher, Chris Brown and Trey Songz.

Yes, I have two.

First, how the hell you gone tell that bold faced lie? Secondly, do you honestly think I wouldn't check google before I brought it up? Don't even bother to answer the second one because clearly honesty isn't your strong suit.

For anyone else paying attention, when you google "the King of R&B" the first picture that pops up is Bobby Brown's. Kells' is there too, along with Usher, Trey Songz, Chris Brown, Ne-yo, Tyrese, Lloyd, Ben E. King, Prince, as well as more than one of Louis Jordan.

Where's the lie?

What's your point? Bobby Brown is jokingly called the "King of R&B" because Whitney called him that when she was high on crack. And if you bothered to click on the Trey Songz pictures it directs you to pages about him dissing R. Kelly. Again, what's your point? So are you judging who's the "King" by the amount of pics that show up on Google now? The majority of the pics are of R. Kelly. You're really trying too hard.

Roosevelt Franklin is the king.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I will use pretty much everyone said in this topic:

R. Kelly= King of R&B

Marvin Gaye= King of Motown

Marvin Gaye= King of Soul (Along with James Brown of course)

Stevie Wonder= Something. I don't know yet. His work was more than R&B. He did tons of genres.

Little Richard= The Orignal Rocker

Rick James= The baddest man in show business

Pat Boone= ?

Usher, Chris Brown ect.= Prince of pop (If any title should be given at all)

Justin Bieber= Queen of shit

This isn't biased (Except for Bieber). I love Marvin Gaye more than other of these artists, but I feel that because R is the most sucessful R&B act and his influence is remarkabl he is number one. Hs music is great too though.

Fixed.

FYI, I didn't lie. You're just trying to deflate because you don't want to admit the truth. Maybe, if you made use of your ACER and actually searched "King of R&B" then you'd see what I'm talking about. There are several articles and images of R. Kelly. Do I have to take a screencap for you?

I posted a recent poll result from a popular music blog that stated that 2,900 voted in favor for R. Kelly. You can also search for other polls on "Who's the King of R&B" and R. Kelly has won. Billboard has named him the King of R&B, Vibe magazine has stated the same as well. In fact, several music critics refer to R. Kelly as the King of R&B and this can be pointed out in many reviews of his albums, shows and also recent reviews of his new song "Shut Up!". Many on here agree that R. Kelly is the King of R&B too.

There is ONLY 1 Rev Al Green...Music Royalty & ICONic Soul-Father indeed...Black Radio plays his Shit around the clock and always will.....The only thing is Everyone is not in agreement that he is "The King of R&B"....

R. Kelly did not ask for the title and he did not give himself the title. It was given to him by the Media, Music industry peers & the buying Public. It is what it is.

Make no mistake R. Kelly is NO "Al Green"...R. Kelly grew up listening to AL not the other way around..So I'm with you in Spirit..
