Actually there was: Dinah Washington, then Aretha got her title. They just changed it to "soul" because soul had its golden period around the time Aretha released "Respect".
I thought it was Queen of the Blues.
Dinah was a blues/jazz singer. Ive heard her as well as Bessie Smith given similiar titles as being the queen of blues.. Ive heard Billie Holiday as well but also queen of jazz.
Aretha was more associated with soul than blues.. |

of what, 7 billion ppl? Let's not be delusional here
I had in mind only those people who live in the information space, and have at least some idea of the music and a world in which they live. .
Personally, I do not know at least one person who does not know about Elvis or Michael, and their "royal" status.
It is impossible for anyone who has a TV, radio or newspaper.

James Brown is more well known in Africa than Elvis is. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton |

Well, more than half of the world don't have TV or Radio and many countries that have newspaper have to "select" things that can be on paper (government-manuplated media system) so...
I was reading Lisa Ling's interview one day and she said she visited North Korea and was surprised that people she met didn't know who Michael Jackson was. It really shouldn't be that shocking.

Some people still live in a traditional way, living off the land with no electricity, running water, etc. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton |

I have no doubt. But in general, globally?
Africa - it's about a billion people, one seventh of the world. |

Yes, so you should only consider people who have ideas about the world and have the opportunity to learn new information at least from any source. Many people in Vietnam do not know that the Soviet Union collapsed, and who the U.S. president. So I was talking about only those people who have access to the media and have a view of the world. |

Got ya. It does make me wonder if Elvis is really as well known as all the others like Beatles or MJ though. At the end of the day it really doesn't matter how famous they are or how many people agree with their titles |

I do not know, in Eastern Europe Elvis is famous as the Beatles and Jackson, this is approximately the same level.
"Royal" status should be accepted or widely known, so there is no King of R&B. The only place where they can be crowned - the various sites, but it will be permanently different names. There is no obvious leader, as in other musical styles. |

He's not. Madonna has more global fame than Elvis. |

Well North Korea censors a lot regarding entertainment and are very anal about politics and cut off many from any outside influences, so that's understandable, but everyone in South Korea will know him. Trust me on that, just look at their entertainment industry. Many have praised him too there. [Edited 11/2/11 5:41am] |

It is better to give them to me!
Of course, people joke about Bieber. JB in the status of eternal рrince of рop a la Justin Timberlake.
usher probably the most famous RNB singer (male) in my area. 5-10 years ago, he was extremely popular here, but he certainly not worthy of the title of King. |

I agree, that title is hard to assert a valid answer!? Marvin's musical evolution transcended alla this, though, for me. |

I was saying that because Emancipation89 wrote. Then they wrote that everyone needs to get with the "new era" or something like that....I think I need therapy from reading that. LOL:
Meh I don't know and I don't care...All I know is JB is the NEW King of Pop
