R. Kellywas Dubbed "King of R&B" by Music critics and Radio DJ's didn't dispute it. He's got the Talent to hold the "Crown", i like a a lot of his Hits, but he wouldn't be MY pick...
The same thing happened to Mary j. Early-early on. Radio & Music Critics crowned her "The Queen of Hip hop Soul" simply because nobody was putting out material as consistent as Queen Mary...
Same situation with Erykah Badu...Radio DJ's & Music Critics all agree that she is "The Queen of Neo-Soul"...I must say there is no argument..The Sista owns it...Jill Scott wants it but Erykah owns it...
I LOVE Whitney MADLY. Always have and always will. But "The Queen of Pop" rightfully deserves to go to Mimi Carey...She's unmatched on all levels. However, Music Critics & Radio DJ's CONTINUE to Flip-Flop the title to Whitney, MaDonna & Mimi...Mariah deserves it but Critics wanna share the title...
The Late-Great James Brown will always be known as "The Godfather of Soul" which is simply another term for "King of Rhythm & Blues"...no matter how you spin-it that is what "Godfather of Soul" means.....The ONLY reason R. kelly is ABLE to keep the title "King of R&B" is because it wasn't disputed when James was alive and people will look at it separately from "Godfather of Soul"....So Kelly can have "King of R&B" and wear it proudly...
Critics are now referring to Patti LaBelle as "The Godmother of Soul" which she DESERVES to be called...No one is representing and protecting Soul music better than Patti. Now that Critics have honored her with the title whenever you go to a Patti concert she has a Jumbo-Screen Monitor on stage that flashes "The Godmother of Soul" Proudly.....
The Late Great Luther Vandross is the Greatest Male Vocalist that ever recorded. There is no title for him because his voice still lives on as the GREATEST....
[Edited 11/4/11 7:19am]
I don't agree with everything in your post, but this last statement I totally agree.
A close second to Luther is Donny Hathaway.
Here's why I think this. Both men have phenomenal natural singing voices. They both can sing without even appear to try. Their voices are so natural and so smooth that it appears they are just breathing... while making great music with just their vocal cords.
I give it to Luther over Donny because I have heard Luther do "tricks" or runs with his voice that sent chills down my spine. But he didn't over do this the way Mimi does with her whistle register singing. A little goes a long way.
Luther knew this and was the very best at using his talent.
Luther spent most of his career sing POP tunes. |

Number 1 does not mean that the song is really good. Let's remember the five number 1 hits Katy Perry.
Clarify: it is not a global star.
R. Kelly is known in the U.S. and certain other countries, he is not widely known, he is not even in the top 50 most famous artists in the world. How can he be king? King without a kingdom.

People were calling him the "King of R&B" long before the "I'm a Flirt (Remix)". It's like how MJ was always called the "King of Pop" and started embracing the title. Same thing with James Brown, Elvis, Aretha Franklin, etc. |

It's all subjective. The majority enjoy the song and at the end that's all that matters.
Have you lived in every country in the world to give this assumption? Did you do a survey? Being chosen to open the World Cup and Billboard naming him the most successful R&B artist of the last 25 years > your opinion.
That's all. Troll harder. |

No, this is your view usually similar to the hard trolling. Sorry! I lived only in Europe but has been in many countries.
I do not know about R.Kelly practically nothing. I do not know in detail about his scandals. The only thing that I just found out after listening to his albums that Kelly is an average singer and mediocre songwriter, nothing special, so I do not think he's the king. A matter of taste. But if objectively, Kelly is only the sixth place (tied with usher) among men holders Most Billboard # 1 Hot R & B Hits |

"King of R&B" was used as a marketing term.
Its like how Rolling Stone (a rock mag) declared Eminem "the king of rap". Fortunately, Em was smart enough to denounce that. The R&B community of today is a lot more susceptible to marketing than previous generations. Clear Channel forced the combining of genres (R&B and hip-hop - because its what "the blacks" listen to) into one market and since they control the markets, they control the marketing. The people didn't choose him, the labels and stations did. His work is "dumb" enough to have a larger appeal. In the process of dumbing down peoples' tastes (as I have discussed on here before), they needed someone like Kelly. He fits the bill. |

yeah. Justin Bieber was nominated for best new artist of the focking year. I really trust popular media to tell *me* what good RB is.
Kelly's best work lately is his attempts to cop someone else's vibe. Percy Sledge.

There's no such thing as "originality". None of the artists with King and Queen titles are original but they have contributed new sounds/ideas.
By the way, Kellz already made the concept of the Love Letter album clear prior to releasing it. It was his way of paying homage to the Soul/R&B greats that influenced him. |
