It changes every few years. Once it was Marvin Gaye, then it was Teddy Pendergrass, in the mid 80's it was Bobby Brown, he was replaced by Keith Sweat. Some time in the early 90's it became Kells and he held the title until recently. Right now I'd have to say it's Chris Brown followed closely by Trey Songz.

Yeah I said it! lol Who else is putting up Breezy's numbers? He stole Usher's relevance so it's surely not him. If you want to know who's popular look at your tumblr dashboard and count how often an artist's picture pops up. You'll be waiting a long time to see Usher's and you'll never see anyone adult contemporary unless it's a female like Adele. What I do see a lot of is CB, Big Sean, Trey Songz, Tunchi and Tyler the Creator.

They are both pop and hip hop artists tho. Those others you mentioned are strictly hip hop. Nothing R&B about any of them. lol If you think that's R&B then you don't know what R&B is

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I definately know what R&B is. Peep my "Soul Power" playlist.

Breezy hasn't put in as much work as Kells yet, but he's talented and possibly has a long career ahead of him. I almost never listen to the radio, but when I do he's unavoidable.

so, they are POPULAR (and dare I say it???) African American.... that doesn't mean they are making RB music.

That dude was deliciously dysfunctional. There needs to be a movie made about his romantic life and his drama.

There's people disguising what R&B is. What Chris and Trey are is hit pop or pop&B. And their R&B definitely don't equal RHYTHM or BLUES. lol

You really tried it! lol

Hell he and his whole family almost are nutcases. Bobby and Cecil messed with the same woman (Cecil is still married to her) as did Cecil and Curtis. Harry Womack got stabbed over a mistaken woman's lingerie (it was from Bobby's girlfriend) and Friendly Womack has stayed quiet lol

Are you an Arthur Prysock or Billy Eckstien fan? It's CONTEMPORARY R&B. Is is gut wrenching or soul stirring? No, but it's what constitutes R&B in 2011. Hell a lot of R&B from the 80's was light in the ass too.

He was, but he fell off years before she made that comment. That's how everybody knew Whitney was on crack. lol

His popularity had fallen off by then but no one had yet surpassed his numbers. Don't Be Cruel was certified 8x platinum and Bobby was certied 1x platinum. I think going by numbers it has to be Usher right now. Confessions sold 20 million.

But I'm just going by a concrete measure - sales. Not intangibles that are just opinion really.

IS THERE a King of R&B these days? The last King I knew of in R&B was Teddy Pendergrass. I mean, we're talkin' music as well as his affect on the brothas as WELL AS the sistas. He oozed sex appeal for years and drove the girlies NUTS. Since THEN, I'm not sure anymore. Usher? :-O

Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

Because his reign has lasted so long and he hasn't had a major hit since "I'm A Flirt". "Love Letter" got a lot of acclaim but only went gold. "When A Woman Loves" was played on the radio every 5 minutes but peaked at 16 on the chart.

CB's "F.A.M.E." went gold too, but it also had 5 top ten singles and I don't think he's reached his apex yet. Unfortunately Kells' career is winding down.

How? Billboard recently named him the most successful R&B artist of the last 25 years.

and just because R. Kelly's last major hit was in 2007 doesn't mean he's not the King still. Most of the artists with honorific titles haven't had a hit in over a decade but they're still "King" or "Queen". Besides Love Letter went Gold in 2 months with little to zero promotion, not many artist can do that.
