Solomon had several nicknames. As Timmy84 pointed out the King of Rock and Soul was one of them. He was also known as King Solomon, the Bishop of Soul and the Muhammud Ali of Soul.

Personally I like Joe Tex's "title;" the Clown Prince of Soul.

these whole titles, that said, bug the fuck out of me. it's all pr crap. Leon Russell is the "Master of Space and Time" or some shit. I don't agree with everything in your post, but this last statement I totally agree.

A close second to Luther is Donny Hathaway.

Here's why I think this. Both men have phenomenal natural singing voices. They both can sing without even appear to try. Their voices are so natural and so smooth that it appears they are just breathing... while making great music with just their vocal cords.

I give it to Luther over Donny because I have heard Luther do "tricks" or runs with his voice that sent chills down my spine. But he didn't over do this the way Mimi does with her whistle register singing. A little goes a long way.

Luther knew this and was the very best at using his talent.
