Why Don't People Mention Whitney Houston When They Mention Madonna, Prince and Michael Jackson?

I always wonderd this.

They all dominated the 80's. I think.

you're right they share some qualities, they are all huge 80's pop stars

But Whitney gets lumped in with the pop/R&B balladeers and the other three are the more visually striking singer/dancers

I think cause Whitney just sung and didnt try to act like she was an "artist" that wrote or produced.

At least she writes lines instead of sniffing them.

Change a word and claim a third doesn't impress me.

Besides the fact she did crack, she's just as good as Madonna.

Didn't Whitney really come onto the scene after they did?

Whitney and Madonna are two entirely different artists. Though I'd call them both pop artists, their pop is different: Madonna is dance-pop with occasional soft rock, Whitney's more adult contemporary with some soft rock and dance-pop elements but was truly on the side of adult contemporary and has been for the duration of her career. Plus while Madonna is in a genre when all you need was a great song (even if your voice isn't technically stunning, and even Madonna would admit that), Whitney's genre requires you to sing/oversing anything you can get your hands on. Plus Prince & Michael (two completely different artists themselves) don't really compare to Whitney.

Only thing all four have in common is they were four of the biggest pop artists of the 1980s and four of the best-selling too.

But there was something a bit old fashioned about Whitney compared to Madonna. They are both pop, but Whitney is sugary and watered down pop, and Madonna was at least challenging in some ways, as were MJ & Prince.

Whitney is the classic beautiful singer, not a real trend-setter.

Well she is credited as the only writer of her first top 10 hit Lucky Star, if she pulled that kind of BS you know one of the hundreds of her producers/co-writers would speak up about it like they have with Bey or Rihanna.

You can't compare those people, just because they're all in the music business. Prince is in a league of his own, and I really don't understand why anyone compares him with any of those mentioned "artists". None of them could produce an album entirely on their own.

Producing an album on your own is different than producing a good album on your own. lol I wouldn't really say he's in a league of his own. He's still a pop-star.

That may be true but the FACT is NONE of those artists have the talent and musical capacity to produce an ENTIRE album on their own unlike Prince... period.

He produced SEVERAL fantastic albums on his own. If you want to compare him with someone else, then do it with real musicians, songwriters and producers, but none of these acts.

And she put Jimi Hendrix in his place! lol

When it comes to Whitney, besides "I Will Always Love You" what are her classics? I'm not trolling, I actually want to know.

I rather take an artist who is THEMSELF even if they are an asshole than a mass produce manufactured pop album that has no soul or self in it at all.

lol smh at this snobbery right here. I'm pretty sure the Madonna and Michael are both strong songwriters (not too sure about Madge, but I know that Michael is). The comparison can still be made though. Producing albums on your own does not suddenly make you some amazing genius. Each of the aforementioned pop stars, besides Whitney, had some sort of defining talent that set them in a so-called "league of their own". Michael Jackson was a fantastic songwriter, singer, dancer/entertainer. Madonna was an amazing businesswoman. Prince was a multi-instrumentalist who could write fantastic pop songs that followed all the rules of standard pop while breaking them at the same time. Do not bring down the others just to make Prince seem like a god, which he isn't. Each of them are unique in different ways.

I rather take an artist who is THEMSELF even if they are an asshole than a mass produce manufactured pop album that has no soul or self in it at all.

Neither Madonna nor Michael Jackson are assholes who produce manufactured pop with no soul or self.
