Plus Whitney came AFTER they began asserting their dominance, plus her albums are just boring in my opinion.

I fixed it for you. No need for more Drama lol lol

lol

And I agree with you about George Michael. With Wham!, by himself, duets, he definitely dominated. Same with Phil Collins.

I like Whitney but NOOOO she should not be mentioned with the 80's Musketeers. The reason why Madonna, Mike, Prince are the only three artists mentioned when speaking of the 80's is because they were the MOST popular. Their of course were artists who had successes as well during this period but NONE that had a MAJOR impact like these three especially Michael.

Producing an album on your own is different than producing a good album on your own. lol I wouldn't really say he's in a league of his own. He's still a pop-star.

He produced SEVERAL fantastic albums on his own. If you want to compare him with someone else, then do it with real musicians, songwriters and producers, but none of these acts.

Bingo.

My point is there were alot of popular and influential artist during the 80's, but the only time I hear this trinity is here. Im glad the Madonna fans, and the prince fans and the MJ fans have all agreed to this, but to the majority of people and the mainstream theres alot more people at the table.

You can't compare those people, just because they're all in the music business. Prince is in a league of his own, and I really don't understand why anyone compares him with any of those mentioned "artists". None of them could produce an album entirely on their own.

I was born in 1981 and the first voices I remember are the Pointer Sisters, Tina Turner and MJ.

Not very far after would be Cyndi Lauper, Prince, and of course, Madonna.

Yes Gloria Estefan, Whitney, George Michael were all in the mix (I watched MTV from age 2 - liberal parents) but i happen to think it's the BIG FOUR. JANET, Michael, Madonna and Prince. When I discovered Mike had a badass little sister who could sing and dance like he could...man, it was on.

If you think of the 80s in terms of radio play, MTV, cultural impact on things like dancing and fashion, and just plain SUPERSTARDOM - Whitney and Tina (and Bruce) all fit the bill, but in reality, these four artists were the ones at the crux of all things influential and 'of the times' - MJ, JJ, P and M. Rhythm Nation CAME OUT in the 1980s, so the whole production is 80s. Videos for everything from Billie Jean to When Doves Cry to Like A Virgin to Pleasure Principle to Like a Prayer to Rhythm Nation to Kiss to Bad...this was the badass 4.

But, I also must say, it really is a 3. Think about it...MJ, Madge, Prince were all born in the same YEAR, within MONTHS AND WEEKS OF ONE ANOTHER, all in the midwest. Something was in that water...

I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

From looking at most of the critic's choices U2, Run-DMC, REM out score both Madonna and Prince. Hell P is further down the list than most on here could ever admit. MJ is the only one of the 3 mentioned that is constantly in the top 5 and U2 trounces him on average.

I don't think that this thread was intended to be a comparison thread.I don't know why some of you are trying to play the comparison game confuse The question was...why isn't Whitney mentioned along with "the big three" of the 80s? Let's stay on topic, folks.

to answer the question....I just think that Prince,Madonna and Michael defined 80s pop music like no other artists did.Not just with their music, they did it with their outfits, their image, their style, their look.Michael ruled 1983,Prince ruled 1984 and Madonna ruled 1985.That's why they're frequently referred to as "the Big Three".

...and, truthfully, Whitney ruled 1986 and 1987.

I don't know about anyone else, but I *do* tend to put her in sequence with Prince, Madonna and Michael when it comes to 80s pop phenoms. Her sales were every bit as much through the roof as theirs. And don't give me that "artistry" bullshit. I couldn't care less who programmed keys and drum machines in the studio, or who wrote what. In the 1980s, Whitney had people flocking to record stores and blowing up radio station requests lines for her music the same way the other three did.

Well see my personal preferences,, like everyone else on here, doesnt matter. A prince site is obviously going to be prince slanted and god knows there are enough Jackson and Madonna fans to round out the trinity here, but as I've stated this trinity notion is only here. Google it and all you get is that these 3 were born in the same year, which honestly doesnt have anything to do with anything.

Were they important?, yes, did they influence the scene? , yes. However they arent the be all end all 80s music.

Hell Robert Palmer and Peter Gabriel had just as much influence MTV wise than P or M and Im not even mentioning New Wave and the 2nd british invasion.

I get what you're saying but I think that,if you were to ask a random person on the street (who was actually alive during the 80s) to name the THREE 80s ARTISTS that had the most impact (musically and culturally),they would probably name at least two of "the big three"......Madonna and MJ,definitely.I guarantee it.That "trinity notion" is not only on this site.
