There were millions of people of all ages that played his music all the time in their houses. Not everyone had an access to video channels in the 1980s, because you had to have cable TV. In fact, I didn't see "Thriller" myself until 1993. I think it's fair to say that his music - the melodies, the rhythms, what was essential MJ'ish about them - made a huge impact on people. It shaped up people's tastes and even the way they perceive music in general.

A senior musicologist once told me that he had traveled to the deepest of Amazon to make recordings of the songs the shamans living there were using during their rituals. To his amazement he found out that many of the songs were songs by Michael Jackson, but they had just changed the words. I'm pretty sure those guys didn't have cable TV.

oooooh...funny how people made these things up...in this case it's easy becuz it's hard 4 general people 2 check it out. I've worked in "the deepest amazon" 4 9 years with almost evey tribe there in a Medical Care program 4 natives and I can tell u, they have their own culture, and it's very rich and unique. It's been explored be4 for bands like Sepultura, a brazilian metal band in their best album called "Roots". I can tell u 4 sure, there's no MJ influence in those tribes...I actually laughed my ass out when I read that. But, that doesn't mean that MJ didn't have a great impact on the music/culture though, I believe that he did.

P.S.: oh, and I'm not saying that U novabrkr made it up...but whoever who told U, just 2 let it clear...not personal.

novabrkr's comment made me remember the article about it. It was some tribe that did know Michael's songs. I gotta find it

Exactly. Mike is gone and look at MTV now. They should rename it to RTV. It's become a reality tv. It has nothing to do with music or music videos nowadays.

"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

The Jacksons had a pretty good run with the Triumph and Destiny tours, with Off the Wall in between. But you have to take into account he's out with his brothers for over a decade, and Off the Wall put him on the map as a solo artist.

Thriller kind of had a slow but brisk start, but it did go Platinum before Motown 25.

Walter Yetnikoff basically told MTV & Warners that he was going to tell the media that MTV doesn't play black artists, even though they played Prince on there. He also said he was going to block them from having them play videos of his other artists, and was going to tell other record label heads to do the same.

Motown 25 put Michael in the living rooms all over America on a TV special a lot of people were tuning in to watch. Cable was still pretty new, it was still ABC, NBC, or CBS. I think it was Marvin's last concert, but can't be 100 percent on that.

Thriller was an event. It was a mini movie where you had a name producer as well as a special effects guru working on it. As a song, it's never been a favorite of mine but that did start the wave of name directors making music videos, but at the same time, music videos have become the place where movie directors developed their skills before making feature films. You could go through the list of directors out there and prob. figure out half of them have made videos.

Marvin's last televised performance was on Soul Train in June 1983.

I don't get the whole "Michael was a child prodigy" thing. What is that idea based on? Before 1976 (the year he turned 18), Michael was puppetmastered by Motown and Joe. Sure, as a child, when it came to performing, he had 'soul' that was beyond his years; but to call him a prodigy is premature. His individual creativity wasn't even fully tapped into until the late 70s, when he was in his early 20s.

[Edited 4/4/11 23:36pm]

There's your answer. lol If he had reached his creative peak at the age of 10, how could he continue to grow as an artist? You can pretty much say that any legendary artist's individual creativity wasn't fully tapped into until their adult years.

In Brazil the only place that could happen would b in Brazil southeast tribes, where they shot some scenes 4 the video "earth song"...but believe me even there I don't think that was likely. Damn americans wants 2 take credit even 4 the the most primitive and isolated culture round here...or maybe it was somewhere else in the world...or this tribe from southeast Brazil can be actually singing a very strange version of...i don't know...thriller biggrin http://www.youtube.com/wa...re_related

I think that the musicologist was quoted as saying that they were utlizing MJ's songs for their own usage, not that MJ's songs were the first ones they had ever heard of in their entire existence.

I didn't have MTV growing up, but I was obsessed with MJ regardless. My cousins would sometimes record me video tapes of MJ specials on MTV though, but for the most part, I listened to the music, wore out my VHS of "Moonwalker" and played the video game smile

So you know, I don't think it's just about MTV, it's about exploring as many avenues as you can in order for people to hear your music. Videos and MTV were one of those avenues. The video games were another. Hell, how many artists do you see with their own rides at Disneyland? So the videos were an avenue, a big avenue, but take them away and Michael would still be one of the biggest stars of all time.

Mike's contingency for M25 was a solo spot so he could promote his new shit that had been out for months already. shrug

When did the UK get MTV?

I know the OTW videos along with Billie Jean and Beat It were all shown on Top Of The Pops and Thriller premiered on Channel 4 on The Tube at midnight

Yep, my older cousins still talk about the night that Thriller premiered... they were in high school and said literally EVERYONE watched it and nobody could talk about anything else for weeks.

MTV Europe started in 1987 and so that's what my cousins had when they taped stuff for me in the early 90's.

I believe they expanded into individual channels for each country sometime in the mid 90's.

Well, it started with Billie Jean. Although The Girl Is Mine was a hit (peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the R&B chart), Billie Jean's release pushed the album in the top 5

The album didn't reach #1 until 10 weeks after it's release in February 1983, right around the time Billie Jean hit MTV (and also BET)

I've been looking for UK TV adverts and footage from the premieres and I could only find footage from the Australian premiere on Countdown with Molly Meldrum. MTV played the original advert for the premiere of Thriller during Michael's memorial service but unfortunately, I didn't record it

I did find an airing of Don't Stop Til You Get Enough on Top Of The Pops from mid 1979 cool

I don't have anything from that early.

I have a VHS of the original BBC2 airing of the 1992 Bucharest show, which I think aired the day after the show. I remember watching it when it aired and I used to watch that tape CONSTANTLY as a kid, which I why I just wasn't excited when they finally released the DVD in '05.

I was like "Damn, of all the shows, they release this one that I've already had for 13 years?" lol lol

I also have a VHS with the UK premiere of "Black Or White" which I think was the ONLY time a UK TV channel showed the full uncut video.

Timmy - Yeah! The Box! LOL I remember that shit. Your timing is way off though. That didn't launch until 1992. Back in the 90's that shit was basically a jukebox where you phoned up to request a song and if they got enough requests they'd play it. Hell, that practice continued with a lot of channels even up till the mid 00's, but as far as I know, there aren't any video channels that do that anymore. They wouldn't be able to make money from it cos ain't nobody paying to see a damn music video when we have the internet LOL.

See? lol I knew I was WAY off. lol

What programs played videos in the late 80s and early 90s?

Top Of The Pops and MTV. There was a couple of other shows that came on that I don't remember the names of, on the regular channels... and I'm sure a lot more on satellite/cable, but I didn't have that.
