I'll laugh here too-- lol And then, because I hate being misunderstood, I'll spend way too much time explaining myself. But it's part of the way my autism expresses itself, so here goes.

By the way, I was kidding. Warner doesn't hate us, and they certainly weren't trolling us since the 70s. I thought what I was saying was so obviously ridiculous that people would know I wasn't serious (for crying out loud, I repeatedly said "I suggest this with all seriousness"--who would ever say that if they were being serious?). So, just to be clear, my actual feelings on this are that Warner Brothers is doing the best they can in the messed up situation they're in to get something out that they should have been able to do years ago if it weren't for difficulties with Prince's lack of cooperation in and lack of interest in the project--which is what I said is what a "reasonable person" might conclude from "all the evidence." And I said that in the very same post that was being quoted.

Here's the first time I mentioned Warner hating us (udo shortly before this had been going off on the packaging as well). How is it possible to read this as anything but a joike? I didn't use in emoticon because, well, it seemed obvious.

Moonbeam said: As Only mentioned early, maybe they caught on people changing the store and they are going to go for a global launch, releasing it a the same time everywhere in the world. I don't know what they'd achieve by doing that, though. So as always, we'll have to wait and see!

exactly lol since the stores update at 23:00 local time, it seems a stretch to think they'd
coordinate a global launch of an obscure instrumental track just because, what, 200? fans
were changing store setting just to listen to a 90 second clip of the previous tracks.

You're both underestimating the sheer evil and disrespect that characterize Warner Bros.'s attitude and actions when it comes to Prince and his fans. The only reason they made a deal with Prince back in 2014 was so that they could, one sweet glorious day, screw with us in just this way, releasing a shoddy package consisting almost entirely of stuff we already have in a digipack designed for one reason and one reason only--they're trolling us. Heck, it probably goes back to the initial contract in 1977--all just for this moment, when they made us wait, staring at our computers, waiting to see evidence that Father's Song availability was slowly, inexorably, making its way across the planet's surface, creeping ever closer to the second when we could click and buy... They really do hate us that much. Really. For true.

[end of quoted material]

I even ended it with "Really. For true." How can that be serious? But, phishanga seemed to take it that way, and no one else seemed to get the joke either, so we had this:

Phishanga said:

Jeez. Warner doesn't hate anyone. They are not "evil". They are, big surprise, a record company that wants to make, HAS to make money. And, big surprise, they have to look at costs. And we are NOT the only target group they want to sell to, HAVE to sell to, if we were, good luck with making any money. And they surely would like to release lots of stuff, remastered from the original tapes, but who knows how the situation is with the estate and where that shit even is at PP or his house or whereever. And if they were to wait with releasing ANYTHING until it's all figured out, everything categorized, they better hire some people, dealing with calls of 100 complaining orgers everyday. All this isn't easy and especially not with anything regarding Prince, because you KNOW he didn't care about getting all this in order.

[Edited 6/9/17 17:44pm]

All very valid points. And certainly Warner could just be a record company trying to make money and doing the best they can in a less than perfect situation in which a never completely cooperative artist died leaving a mess for an estate that he didn't even leave a will to establish. I can see where a reasonable person might come to that conclusion, since it is the direction all the evidence points.

But, and I suggest this with all seriousness, maybe you should consider another possibility: Warner is trolling us because they hate us, and have been doing so since the 1970s, if not before. Don't have a closed mind to the possibility, please.

[end of quoted material]

So, again, it seems to me pretty obviously a tongue-in-cheek parody of a combination of viewpoints expressed on the .org recently. But then someone besides Phishanga noticed, and decided that while the views expressed in my two posts were crazy, they weren't intentionally crazy, just crazy crazy. And suddenly it seems like others also thought I meant the loony theory.

Here's my honest opinion, yet again--Warners is doing what they can, Prince should have cooperated earlier with expanded remasters and sets, and should have left a will and established a framework for releases in the event of his death, but I'm still excited by the product that is coming out in a couple of weeks, and I can't wait to hear the new tracks.

I doubt for the most part Apple would have any clue what WB's plans would be as to pre-release singles. Plus if you look on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp..._tlw_trk20

The 5:30 track time is there as well under "Product Details", but not there if you look at the other tracks. It was added recently.

My guess is it's the final promo single before the release, probably Friday like the other releases. Makes sense since Father's Day is Sunday.

Same cheap ass packaging.

WB does not care for their product:

Not in the sense of proper storage of them discs.

Not in a way of creating a proper, decent product that one would expect to celebrate a 33 year release of a movie or soundtrack.

They do not even market this as the extra special limited edition of `only` 100K pieces with the rest in normal but proper jewel cases.

I dunno, honestly the packaging looks totally fine for me. Same with the tracklisting. The sound quality of Roadhouse Garden is a bit suspect but if the tracks have more of the Electric Intercouse quality I think it will be a fine release all around

We'll see in perhaps 10 year after the release.

What will the sheap ass cardboard look like then?

And how easy is it to replace a standard jewel case?

If you are talking about literally 10 years, I bought the Rush album Snakes and Arrows in a cardboard case in 2007 and its still in great condition. So for me, I have no problems with the packaging

Here's a preview of the expanded version from Variety - I'm a bit concerned that the album sounds "brighter", which would indicate a fair degree of compression applied in the new mastering sad Or maybe the journalist is just talking shite...

No it doesn't? Brighter generally refers to the higer frequencies on a noise signal.

Compressing audio will result in there being a bit more top end - hence sounding brighter.

Compression applies a consistent threshold over the whole noise signal. Unless there is an in-built EQ standard that they use with the limiting/ compressor, I'm not sure what engineering classes you've taken.

Come on, lower frequencies trigger more compression than higher ones, owing to having to have more energy to be considered the same amplitude as a higher one - resulting in a slightly brighter sound being perceived. It's a blanket statement I made, fair enough, and perhaps a bit glib bearing in mind other aspects to be considered (such as how different types of compressors work etc.), but I'm standing by it.

That still doesn't make any sense. Anyway, considering the original CD mix has always sounded quite dull, having a brighter sound on the remaster can only be a good thing and will allow the mix to breathe a little more and sound as good as the vinyl version always has.

Jjam's description makes perfect sense.

Of course, there are many different ways to get a brighter sound: EQ boosts, multiband compression, harmonic exciters, using limiters in a certain way... hell, even adding a certain type of reverb can result in that.

Now that I've brought up reverb myself...

It'd be interesting to know if they've added reverb to the tracks. It seems to be the case that when sound quality on the source tapes that the bootleggers have gotten in their hands has not been that great they've, well, added "expensive-sounding" reverb to the tracks. I'd like to think a professional audio engineer would not do that, at least not to the same extent the bootleggers have done, but who knows.

I'm not intending the above comment to imply the source material on the PR release comes from bootlegs (that's a different discussion). I'm just assuming the perceived sound quality of the outtakes, even if they were directly from the vault, isn't necessarily something that'd compare favourably to the released PR album. I think the engineer(s) might have tried to make the unreleased material sound more like the album.

I'm curious about The Dance Electric because the bootleg I've had from the 90's had a ton of reverb and the version Questlove posted a couple of years ago didn't have that much. And I honestly like the 90's bootleg version with the reverb more.

The reverb used on the Purple Rain album is apparently one of these monsters:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/...t250-1.png

(yes, it's the size of a fridge)

It's an early digital unit, but who knows how much of the sound was the result of the analog circuitry playing a part in it all. The thing is, it's a reverb that uses a lot of modulation - vhorus in this case, rather than delay. That's one of the reasons why Purple Rain sounds so big. There are several plugin emulations of the unit available, but I don't know how well they actually replicate the sound of the original unit. Most likely, the execs at WB don't care.

Speaking of The Beatles, the new Super Deluxe edition of Sgt. Pepper is 4CD/DVD/Blu at a price point of $100 more than Purple Rain 3CD/DVD. $100 bucks more for 1 more CD and a blu-ray...

.

Peppers was completely remixed, and that was an amazing amount of work considering the sources involved. CD 2 and 3 are outtakes which were first selected from a wealth of available sources and then mixed etc. CD4 contains yet more previously unreleased mixes.

.

BD and DVD contain new 5.1 mixes + a restored 1992 documentary.

.

It's also a superb looking box set, LP-sized.

i.o.w.:

WB did not even try or rather: did not bother to go near this level of product.

This means that the PR remaster was either a rush job (don't think so) or WB do think that the Prince market does not warrant an investment like one has done for the Beatles record. (dunno how much it would move the break-even point)

If it's the latter case then this is a serious indication for product to come to us in the future; both the amount and the way stuff us delivered could be less than optimal to put it nicely.

That is what the end of the road or the trip towards that end might look like.
