Prince on Favorite Artists Beyonce, WILLOW SMITH, Rita Ora, Kendrick Lamar, More

September 17, 2015

Sep 17, 15 by EURPublisher01

*To promote his new album “HITNRUN,” released this month via Jay Z’s Tidal service, Prince sat down with Entertainment Weekly for a rare interview.

The 57-year-old musician spoke about the album’s “experimental” vibe and shared how he’s managed to keep his creativity flowing for nearly four-decades. (“HITNRUN” is his 38th studio album.)

“It’s something you grab from the air, tap into,” he told EW. “Science can’t explain it….Everything is a grid. You have to build off that.”

The conversation also turned to some of Prince’s favorite musicians now. His tastes range from folk singer Joni Mitchell to 14-year-old Willow Smith:

  • Joni Mitchell: “She’s genius, the way she tells a story, paints a picture with just a few chords—she puts so much in there.”
  • Erykah Badu: “Those last couple records, she was just too ahead of her time—they’re fantastic. And she’s hilarious, so smart.”
  • Kendrick Lamar: “Kendrick is the truth. That’s new, that’s now. What he’s doing, no one else is even trying.”
  • Esperanza Spalding: “I thought I could play bass until I met her. Not even close! [Laughs] She just kills it, man.”
  • Beyonce: “I ain’t mad at anything she does. Anything. Those are great songs.”
  • Janelle Monáe: “Brilliant. She’s so original. I honestly think she could run for president one day. And win.”
  • BØRNS: “We were just listening to ‘Electric Love.’ I like that you can’t tell what it’s inspired by.”
  • Rita Ora: “She is a force of nature, that girl—the way that she walks into a room. She’s got it.”
  • Willow Smith: “I love what she’s doing, her and her brother [Jaden]. I want to meet them. It almost happened, but it didn’t work out. I want to see what she’s making in five years.
  • Tori Kelly: “She’ll make it because she does the work. They’ve got her out there on the road playing, really learning.”

prince knows REAL artist gift & talent. Eye can't wait till he partners with Willow. The sky will b the limit!! Also "Intact"...

If he didn't mention D'Angelo it's probably because he knows D is smoking him right now. D dropped the masterpiece Black Messiah, but all Prince can come up with is the limp garbage SHITNRUNS.

Yeah, Kendrick is amazing. Some of those others too. But there's so much crap on that list. Think of all the great artists Prince COULD be listening to and maybe collaborating with. Instead we get this. Wow.

Given his past, it's pretty creepy that he wants to meet Willow and "see what she's doing in 5 years". Ugh. I like how Kfool thinks that this is a good thing.

So is there a quota to how many times Prince has to mention D'angelo now?

Nah, but Prince's nose is 3 shades darker brown after making these statements.

.... just like when Prince said that if Brown Mark wasn't in his band he would eliminate bass from his music.

Where are my boots?! whofarted

I agree that Prince or any musician needs inspiration to help spur creativity but D'angelo aint the be-all-end-all to all things great music. St. Vincent, David Bowie, Trent Reznor, Van Hunt are making just as good music as D and quiet as kept some of these artists are making records closer to Prince's recognized prime than D'angelo. Prince has never been a singular artist to any particular genre so the artists he's listening isn't that surprising. HITNRUN is a decent album mixing electronica with pop and hip hop, but if his next album is in this direction, hopefully he'll execute those ideas better on the next go round. Wouldn't be mad with an album with joints like "Revelation" on it.

Who there is crap in your opinion? Willow Smith imo is pretty lame but to be fair I haven't really listened to anything of hers' other than one song, so I can't say I'm very informed.

Bowie is my other favorite artist, tied with Prince. I also love St. Vincent (saw her tour, which was fantastic!) and Van Hunt. It would be great if Prince listened to those artists. Instead he listens to 14-year-olds.

But its not.. really. Just to you. I can't stomach that album and I've tried. Give me anything recent by Meshel N'degeocello 9.9 times out of 10 over anything by D'Angelo.

My point (and he knows this) is that everyone has different tastes, so continually talking as if ones statements of "better" are more than opinion circle-jerking and one-up-manship is tiresome. Yet thread after thread its the same shit.

it's not always really about taste though... half the people here would scream hallelujah if prince took a dump on their head

if he ever actually does release a great record again you lot will embarrassed when you look back at the drivel you've been lauding

You're only proving lezama's point. If you don't dig Prince's latest music that's fine, but to cast aspersions on people that do says more about the person generalizing about Prince fans that dig his latest albums than the people whose insults are directed at.

Some.. perhaps but I, having watched Prince discussion groups over many years, think that thats actually a small but vocal minority. Most people here appreciate some things and others not so much, which is normal with a person that is really all over the place with styles and genres.

.

And if I dont like something, my appreciation of it rarely changes. If I like something today, I don't wake up 5 years from now and question why I liked it. Maybe thats something adolescents do.. adults not so much.

Change it one more time..

Are you feeling ok?

I wouldn't want or accept an autograph or selfie from any so-called celebrity.

Not everyone lacks self-confidence or dignity.

One of my brothers took a picture with a famous boxer, Shane Mosley, and I've been busting his chops about it for 5 years.

Damn weak-minded moment, brother...
