I'm not sure why, but I think Prince is afraid to work with musicians that might be better than him or his equals. It's plain to see when you look at most of the people he's worked with over the past several years. He's a master musician, so I don't know why he would feel this way, but I do believe it.

Working with Stevie, working with Miles, working with Kate, working with George.. im not sure what you mean..

Um, last time I checked, those guys are older than him. They are his teachers, his elders. He ain't gonna say shit to Stevie or Miles. He's going to sit down, shut up, and listen. Can you imagine him questioning Miles Davis?

I think you may be right. This is why I started a thread a few days ago asking if DAngelo was finally in the running for being the new Prince. I dont think I have ever been more disappointed in Prince than when he cites useless, spoiled punk children like Willow Smith. He says nothing about real musicians who are kicking his ass now like DAngelo, Van Hunt, or even Sananda Maitreya because it is obvious that they are acting like grown men and he is trying to be the hip uncle at the family cookout.

How are the people you cited "kicking his ass" exactly? Only Prince of the aforementioned is living comfortably and able to record what he wants when he wants and how he wants. They would all love to be in a position where they could record themselves taking a dump and still have hordes flocking to buy it. To me, "kicking ass" is freedom. Of the three you mentioned Sananda and Van are the free-est musically, but financially they don't have nothing near and will never have anything near what Prince has. D'Angelo tries too hard and thus isn't even free musically.. he's trying to live up to everyone elses expectations of him.

Prince plays what he wants because he wants, not because he can't. Prince can do what D'Angelo does in his sleep, and the next day do some trashy electro-pop, some horrible rap, some incoherent jazz, and then the next day play the most brilliant set of pop, rock, r&b, and funk that anyone living today could do. I think you guys confuse him doing what he wants to do and what's interesting to him at any given moment, for not being able to do what you want him to do. Thats false.

The question was whether or not he's "afraid" of people equal in talent to him. The answer is clearly no.

Oh, please. What a joke. Prince doesn't have it in him anymore to record an album even half as amazing as Voodoo or Black Messiah.

You might want to take a look at your own posts. Lots of opinions there. Also everyone's posts. We're not editing Wikipedia here. We're sharing our opinions on music. Just because you don't like my opinion doesn't mean I'm confusing opinions and fact. Or do you have factual evidence to support your statement that "Prince can do what D'Angelo does in his sleep"? Hmm.

And where's your factual evidence that Prince can "play the most brilliant set of pop, rock, r&b, and funk that anyone living today could do"? How is that subjective? You must have access to some amazing data!

Disagreeing is fine, but please try to be a little less full of it.

Are you suggesting that in all the albums that he's released within the last 10-15 there are not brilliant songs on them intermixed with others? And I'm partly being argumentative because I'm bored, not because I have anything against your opinions. But they're just a lot of fun to attack. wink

He has plenty of great songs on his albums from the last 10-15 years. I've said many times that I love AOA, 20ten, 3121, TRC, ONA, and parts of other albums in that timeframe. I was just addressing your specific statement because of your implication that I somehow thought my opinions and statements were objective. They're just opinions like everyone else's.

Boredom sucks. I'd be less bored of HnR wasn't so completely terrible.

He sounds more like Marvin than Prince. There's not much on Voodoo or Black Messiah that sounds like Prince. Shit, I wish Prince produced some music now that was good enough that Black Messiah could be derivative of it!

lol Black Messiah should have been called VoodooToo, as it's simply, that. Nothing new there. HitnRun isn't a masterpiece, but I wouldn't compare it to BM. I've listened to BM once or twice and it's literally like listening to Voodoo all over again.

lmao I'm just fuckin wit you. But seriously, Black Messiah and HitnRun are two very different styles of music. To compare the two and claim that one or the other is better is kind of illogical given the wildly different musical styles each employs. That and the fact that HnR took months to make, while BM took a decade. I woudl expect BM to be an opus given the amount of time between his two offerings. But it really isn't.

No, the reason for the sampler set is that he's working with musicians who aren't talented enough to play his back catalogue.
'Let's Go Crazy' was slowed down for a reason.
