Me too music

With out question ...you need at least 3 plays of any Prince song to get into it...one thing he does is put alot (maybe too much) into his music...and his lyrics always have hidden messages

I did not like the start of the song on first play ...liked the music but lyrics did seem all over the place in my view... sad

Dang!!! Not diggin it!!!

It's probably slamming live just from sheer volume and energy but I'm not feeling this.

Lately he's been singing in this nasal tenor and cramming alot of lyrics into small timing. disbelief

Prince does not have it in him to write a song of that quality. Sad but true.

Holy shit, the verse sounds like "9 to 5" by Dolly Parton!

Hmm... several people here like the music but aren't digging the lyrics. I'm the other way around, I guess. in the end, it's an OK song -- nothing great, but nothing horrible. shrug

the most interesting thing about this song is... why? The subject matter seems so... random. I wonder why he'd give us this sort of retrospective/prescriptive take on life right now? I wonder what's precipitated this.

Why couldn't he give The Current a nice, clean copy of the studio version of Empty Room... preferably a newer studio version with a killer guitar solo... not the video version with Mayte. Or damn, give them a studio copy of Cosmic Day and tell them it was new.

it doesn't really remind me of a prince song all that much anymore,
it's more like 'just another rock song'. the guitar playing is fine
but it's starting to sound like a hair metal band at this point.

the guitar fierceness and tightness reached an ultimate form on a
few of the lotusflow3r tracks but now it's starting to be like ehm
well like it's just guitar madness for the sake of madness.

whole lotta screamin' goin on with little substance.

don't get me wrong, i love the lotusflow3r title disc to death and
play it almost every day. but i could take of leave this tune.

like "purple and gold" i feel no need to even track this down or
to add it to my folder. didn't download "purple and gold" at all
and the same will probably go for this.

that's an alarming trent to me, i'm not used to that. usually i'm
super excited about new prince music. i even like the songs that
most people piss on. but this is just veering into a very weird
direction.

I'm surprised you say that - its your opinion, of course and I respect that, but I had expected you to like this.

To me, it was great = particularly the lead breaks - and I wouldn't say its starting to sound metal....its more progressive rock, a la LF - its dark, heavy, psychedelic and floating over a deep middle-eastern inspired string riff. That's classic space/psychedelic/progressive rock! I happen to love the genre, so maybe I'm feeling this track more than most!

I've got no problem with the lyrics and I'm one who can't stand the preaching. But, have people really had time to digest the lyrics yet? Probably not - but this is Prince talking about regrets, its unusually open. Particularly the line about wishing he could "Leave a note, you know one like husbands and fathers wrote" - to me, that's him regretting not being married and being a father....quite touching.

However, as always, he is defiant because he has his beliefs and he isn't the "subject" of anyone else - meaning, in part, a lot of the shit that's typed about him round here has no meaning to him. You gotta love that FU attitude, whilst still maintaining a compassionate outlook.

Oh, and yes, distracting us from the court case!! Lol - however, COULD he really have timed the airing of this track so precisely to "cover up" the news (which, is readily available anyway, so its not really a distraction, is it? Its not like you'd miss it!)

Im diggin the lyrics. Lot of folks on here hate it when he trys to put any straight up biblical references in his lyrics, offensive to some of them or awkward maybe. But yeah, im diggin the lyrics.

i agree with you there. i don't have a problem with his 'preachy' lyrics
at all if the songs are strong. stuff like "the word" or "lion of judah"
are songs i simply like and i don't care about the lyrics at all. even
though 90% of the time the lyrics in songs are very important to me. but
backed by good music, lyrics can fit a certain mood, no matter if they
are full of curse words or full of deep religious belief.

some of the lines in this songs are very interesting. i just wish they
would have popped up in something more special, lol.

but hey, i'm glad a lot of folks seem to like it. we can't all like the
same thing. it's not like i have personal beef with prince because i'm
not feeling his current song or anything. i'm just a bit bland faced at
the moment because i was hoping for something nice to listen to over and
over again.

I also like the lyrics more than the actual song.

I'm feeling a lot like I did when C&D first came out - a mix of satisfaction that he was going a dirty rock route with disappointment that he couldn't go it all the way and had to mix in cheesy synths and bells and whistles. Both end up sounding a little embarrassing and make you squirm a bit.

But I've always liked C&D more than most, so that mayhappen here too...
