For some reason, I don’t think he could ever detach himself from remembering her and the life they once shared. They had a unique relationship. Hence, the reason Shelby J. said he always talked about Mayte. Also, the reason a woman he briefly dated told the story of how he’d show her videos of Mayte dancing and “tell little anecdotes” about her. It’s been said he considered her the love of his life. I think what they once shared was never replicated in other relationships he pursued. So, I think, whereas in the past he was able to reassign meaning to some of the songs he wrote for others, I get the feeling it didn’t work so well when trying to do the same for songs he wrote for Mayte. I really feel that way about “7.” I heard him perform it somewhere in 2010 and he even used the sound effects of her sword. I don’t know if that was intentional or not. [Edited 3/30/18 20:11pm]
Amethyst, Who was the woman, that he briefly dated, to whom you refer?

That reminds me of what a dancer friend of his said. The woman, who resembled Mayte said that Prince would show her videos of her dancing and tell her stories about her.She also said that Prince wanted to have her dance at his shows but was afraid she looked so much like Mayte that people would make comparison so he suggested that she lighten her hair.

Ah...and he says it just after the following line: "all I can do is just offer you my looooove". I believe that is all she ever wanted from him and he knew that. Hence, the reason he chose Mayte to Mother his children.

Notorious, December 1999

But a pleasant work environment cannot by itself explain why The Artist seems not to have aged in the last ten years. And it’s not just his forever '80s fashion sense; he's got a Peter Pan-like youthfulness that's downright weird, considering he's a 41year-old workaholic who sleeps two hours a night and does zero exercise. How can he be so well preserved? When pressed for his secret, he leans in and says, “Your magazine probably won't print this, but I don't believe in time. I don't count. When you count, it ages you. If they say you have to retire at 65, you get old at 65. People get hung up on numbers, they push their kids into it and everybody's walking around counting and becoming alcoholic, getting ulcers, evil tempers, and just being realty mean. I said to Mayte, 'One day you'll be 35,' and she just jumped. She still needs to work on it.” This is the first time he's mentioned his wife, Mayte, who now lives in Spain where she's working on starting her own dance company. They're not technically married, because as part of The Artist's disavowal of all things contractual. he had their marriage contract dissolved. But it's obvious that he stilt loves her. While Graham may have been responsible for the philosophical education of The Artist, Mayte seems to have had an equally significantly impact on his emotional growth. "One thing Mayte taught me was how powerful it is to ask someone for forgiveness. Just think about what an aphrodisiac those words are: Will you forgive me? Because deep down. what we all want most deeply is to learn to forgive. If you can't, you're already in hell.”

It’s also because of Mayte that he's begun to confront his intense possessiveness” it wasn't long ago that he wouldn't allow her to be interviewed without him in the room, “I had this thing where I didn't like anyone to touch Mayte: someone would come and hug her and I would shoot her a look, and this change would happen. At first I didn't know where all the tension was coming from, but it would be like there was suddenly air in the room if I saw someone touching her. And then I realized the tension was coming from the words, "my wife.” Before she was "my wife” Mayte was a child of God. And if a man hugs her wrong. that's just another child of God doing wrong and he will ultimately pay a price for that." The Artist pauses for a moment and then adds. "and I'll be there to watch him as he gets kicked down the stairs."

I love the man, but he's all-over-the-place in this interview to the point that I'm confused about what he believes. He professes the Christian belief in forgiveness, but then if another child of God does wrong, prince will be there to watch him as he "gets kicked down the stairs". Secondly, the article states that he isn't technically married (since he "annulled" their marriage, even though the annullment was not religious or legal in nature), and I can imply that prince is the one who told the author about the "annullment" of the marriage. There are a lot of variations in foundational Christan beliefs, but across denominations, there is a great deal of consistency in the teaching that men and woman should have sex within marriage. However, he can still cohabit with Mayte or maintain a romantic relationship with her (assumedly, involving sexual relations) without being married.

InStyle Magazine, May 2000

Several hours later, having flown in for the interview, the Artist is at the downtown New York lounge Halo, wide awake indeed despite the vampiric hour, 3 A.M. He’s seated on a banquette next to his love, Mayte (pronounced MY-tay) Garcia, two glasses of water in front of them. His latest single, “Hot Wit U,” from his new album, Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic, is bumping through the speakers. A diminutive figure in a black velvet catsuit with one huge silver hoop earring, two smudges of mascara and two gold dangling pendants—including his moniker symbol—he does not go unnoticed by other club patrons. But his ubiquitous bodyguard (there’s a second one positioned outside the club) buffers him from the light-headed revelers.

The Artist seems peaceful and content but neither light-headed nor lighthearted. He wants to talk about God, slavery, the burgeoning AIDS epidemic in Africa. He does not particularly care to talk about where he lives or how he lives. To the Artist, the baroque affectations of his wardrobe, and the elaborate homes he maintains near Minneapolis and in Marbella, Spain, are ephemeral, inconsequential. “Come n 2 my head instead,” he seems to be saying. Music will always be his passion, but having jettisoned the controversial public image that garnered him international fame—the randy gestures, the hypersexual posturing of Purple Rain and of more than 20 platinum albums—the Artist, now 41, is singing a different tune. Not only has his name changed (he says he doesn’t mind, though, that some African-Americans continue to call him Prince—"They tell me I’m still a prince to them"—and “Prince” is listed as the producer on Rave), but he and his new music have loftier ambitions. “You can’t promote [some of] these crazy hip-hop records and say you represent God,” says the Artist, who blames the corporate structure, not the hip-hop musicians themselves, for rewarding insolent behavior. “It’s kind of like Pavlov’s dog. They have been told that money makes life better. You should make your life better based on knowledge.”

Not that he’s immune to temporal pleasures. In a few hours the hoops fan will be off to Oakland to attend the NBA All-Star Game. “I don’t set schedules,” he says. “That’s part of being free.” His liberation, he says, dates from 1996 and the release of Emancipation, his first album after extricating himself from his contract with Warner Bros. Records (a subsidiary of Time Warner, In Style’s parent company). Angered that Warners owned the master recordings of his extensive catalogue, including “1999” and “When Doves Cry,” he had begun appearing with the word “slave” scrawled on his face in eyeliner. In a gesture of freedom on his 35th birthday, he changed his given name (Prince Rogers Nelson, named after the Prince Rogers jazz trio, in which his father, John Nelson, and mother, Mattie Baker, both sang) to a glyph of his own creation. “He was miserable and frustrated,” says L. Londell McMillan, the entertainment lawyer and friend who worked out the Artist’s release from the contract. “At the time, he had a lot of barriers up. Now he’s more empowered, at peace.”

"Are we going to talk about the latest fashions?” says the Artist, in a playfully challenging mood. “You know what’s really in style? To be in line with God.”

Mayte says their garden “clears the mind.” The Artist seems to reside in a house of the spirit: “The ultimate real—that’s the tightrope I walk on.”

In an unusual agreement, Arista Records now markets and promotes Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic—which critics deemed his best record since the split with Warner Bros. Records—but the Artist owns the master recordings. He savors the autonomy. “I almost get misty when I think about it,” he says. “It was really like being reborn. There is no ceiling now—no limits. I can see the sky.”

In fact, gazing at the celestial bodies from the balcony of his home in Marbella, on Spain’s Costa del Sol, the Artist was inspired to write “The Sun, the Moon and Stars,” a melodious cut on Rave. Purchased with profits from 1998’s independently released New Power Soul—hence the letters NPS, in purple, emblazoned on the facade facing the pool—the villa, with its Mediterranean views and two marble grand staircases, is a monument to his hard-won corporate liberation. There are also visual reminders of the bond between the Artist and Garcia: His symbol intertwined with the letter M adorns the house, the china, and the slipcovers on the dining room chairs.

With her angelic face and quiet demeanor, Garcia, 26, seems out of place in this trendy New York boite, where nearby club-goers are “smoking something I don’t want to smell,” she says. For just that reason, she chose Marbella as the locale to put down roots. “I like the mentality in the south of Spain,” she says. While the Artist leads a nomadic existence, shuttling between Minneapolis, Marbella and New York, Garcia resides primarily at the Marbella home, which she decorated. She spends most of her time reading, studying religion, and tending her garden. “It’s so relaxed, so different from here. We have cats, dogs, birds. You walk into a room and you just feel at peace.”

Spain is where their love affair began. In 1990, after attending his concert in Barcelona with her mother and sister, the shy, Puerto Rico-born dancer laid eyes on the star backstage and “my heart dropped,” she says. A mere 16, she was living a sheltered life in Germany, where her father was in the military. A connection with an older superstar with a penchant for sexy posturing probably wasn’t what Mother had in mind. But after Garcia sent the Artist a tape showing her belly-dancing, he asked her to join his troupe, New Power Generation, as a dancer and singer. Things remained chaste “until well after she was 18,” the Artist is quick to note. On February 14 1996, they wed in a small ceremony in Minneapolis. Though they annulled the marriage in 1998, igniting rumors that they’d split, the Artist says it ain’t so. “For better or worse? There is no worse. Everything is wonderful.”

The couple did endure a heartbreaking loss in 1996 when their only child, Boy Gregory, died a week after birth from Pfeiffer syndrome, a rare skeletal disorder. The Artist has been reticent to speak of the death. Today the couple love having kids in their lives in any way they can. “We had some inner-city children from [nearby] Malaga up recently,” Garcia says. “They played, swam, just tore up the house. There were eight children and only six adults, and I realized there weren’t enough adults when one of the kids went missing. I later found him hiding.”

Despite the Artist’s spurts of recalcitrance, it seems that Garcia’s innate serenity and maybe the little slice of heaven they have found in Marbella have had a calming effect on him. “He’s floating,” Garcia says. Returning the compliment, the Artist observes, “Mayte has helped me in subtle ways. By putting animals in front of me to teach me how to respect that life. She made a greenhouse, reminding me that God gave us the knowledge to feed ourselves. She did little things without chastising me or being condescending.”

The two respect each other’s freedom—including Mayte’s decision to leave the lounge without him at 5 A.M., unable to stay upright any longer. Soon the Artist will join her, sliding into a black stretch limo to head up to their hotel suite by sunup. But not before a little philosophizing. These days, he says, he places a higher premium on truth—or “the ultimate real"—than on money, fame or awards, which “have nothing to do with unity.” He puts his faith in God and tries to lead by righteous example. “What you represent is more important than anything else,” says the Artist. “If we don’t represent God, we represent the opposite. Life is a symphony, and we are all musicians. You are either in harmony or not.”

I think he was just as confused during that time. I don't believe he was in a stable frame of mind and it all stems back to him grieving the death of his child and the miscarriage.

Someone managed to post this online. I'm not sure who. -This is my very first video with Prince. 1f494.png💔

Shot in LA, on all green screen. I made Q Tip nervous. 1f642.pngsmile

I didn't know anything about the video plot until I showed up. And I think it's plot changed quite a few times.

There was supposed to be a continuation where Prince took me by the hand and it would lead into the next video. But that never happened because I got a lot of hate in P's circles and I was the new girl. 1f642.pngsmile

I had no idea what I was getting into. Lol

I met Prince through Fatima. If you're a dancer in the industry, you know who Fatima Robinson is.

I had gone to one of her auditions in December of 2008 and that day, I wasn't even going to go. Somehow I still did even though I was late.

It was a very very busy audition and we we're learning the choreography in groups. (An audition completely unrelated to Prince).

I was probably in the 7th group of the day. Charm LaDonna was teaching. I was all the way in the back, couldn't see a thing... Fatima just so happened to pass by me as she was looking at all the dancers.

I stopped her and said, "hey do you think we can review this part" (demonstrated some choreo)... She just stopped, stared at me and smiled.

She said, "I think I have a friend who would like you"

I said, "oh! Who?"

She said, "Prince"

My eyes went big. I think I stumbled over my words and lost my breath.

As they say... The rest is history.

I had just been a part of and left a girl group called Nikki 16 that was entirely based off of Prince's former group of the 80's, Vanity 6... but I really did not know much about him or his music then.

I ended up meeting with him for the very first time about a week later at his 77 Beverly Park residence. When he had a party.

I loved that house. So many memories.

I remember everything about the first time we met.

I remember how nervous I was. And how shocked I was about how tiny he was, lol.

He had planned to put me on tour soooooo many times after we met I lost count, lol.

Unfortunately, because I was compared so much to Mayte, I don't think he ever felt comfortable.

I actually never knew who Mayte even was. Believe it or not, all my life people would tell me I looked like this girl named Mayte.

It wasn't until I met Prince that I really learned about her. I had so much awe and respect for her though. Prince would show me old videos and tell little anecdotes.

I got a lot of slack over the years for my pure coincidences related to her. The way I moved, the way I looked. P wanted me to dye my hair blonde at one point to avoid any resemblance. Haha

It sucked. A lot. Lol

Prince taught me allllllll about his music. And much, much more.

A few years later, Prince thanked Fatima for introducing him to me. Which I felt was the sweetest & biggest compliment. He was such a gentleman and so humble.

I am so grateful and feel so blessed and amazed that my fate led me to know him and become such a good friend of his up until his passing. I never would've guessed in a million years that my timeline in life would align with such an incredible soul.

Lala does look a lot like Mayte, she really does. I can see why she reminded P of Mayte. Lala is very articulate, socially-conscious, in addition to being beautiful. She supports feminist causes (e.g., Women's March). I mention the feminist causes because it speaks to the way that P truly RESPECTED women. Very few men have the grace, the class, and the self-control to befriend as many women 25-30 years younger than himself and make it work. Most men would fall into the dirty-old-man trap. But Prince, he was special. To have ALL of these women speak in such glowing terms about him...of how he mentored them and empowered them...it speaks volumes about him.

.

Her comments about Mayte make it clear that Prince thought of and spoke well of Mayte 10+ years after their divorce.

Thanks for posting! That's interesting to me that Prince was worried about Lala's resemblance to Mayte. From what she said,Prince must have spent a lot of time talking about her and that's very sweet that she said that she had awe and respect for her.Lala is a very talented dancer as well!

I agree.Lala is very well spoken and I appreciated her sharing that about Prince. She said in another story that Prince told her that he would love to have a daughter because their wombs have power. He clearly had great respect for women.Lala posted some clips of her dancing to a few songs of his and I really liked her choreography! Her dancing in That Girl Thang was so graceful and beautiful and I can see why she would remind him of Mayte as well.

[/b] Amethyst, Who was the woman, that he briefly dated, to whom you refer?

That reminds me of what a dancer friend of his said. The woman, who resembled Mayte said that Prince would show her videos of her dancing and tell her stories about her.She also said that Prince wanted to have her dance at his shows but was afraid she looked so much like Mayte that people would make comparison so he suggested that she lighten her hair.

If memory serves me right, that would be Lala Escarzega.

Yes.When I first saw her in the video for Chocolate Box I thought she looked a lot like Mayte too.

I’m late to respond but, yes, that’s her name. I couldn’t recall it at the time.

Yes, I think Lala and Mayte look alike. Although Mayte is one of a kind. Prince definitely had a type.

This is my normal life. These marital standards cannot be recreated with money.

Regarding the sentence that I bolded, on what date did she share that he wanted a daughter? Did she share this on Facebook?

I believe she shared that story on IG shortly after he passed,if I recall. It's still on her IG from 6.14.16 along with a clip of her dancing to I Would Die 4 U.She said she jokingly asked him what would he do if he had three girls and he responded that he would be glad because their wombs have power. She said that she replied that most men want sons and he said that was because they don't understand God.She went on to say that Prince had "a special reverence"for women and that he understood their "spiritual power"

Thank you, I found it.

Since instagram isn't loading right now on my laptop, I will just copy what @lalaescarzega wrote on her instagram on June 14, 2016:

[Video of dance routine to "I Would Die 4 U"]

lalaescarzega "I Would Die 4 U"

Prince was a storybook, he was a fairytale, he was your favorite movie and every moment with him was a dream. Knowing him was everything you could imagine & more. He was the most romantic man I've ever met, he noticed everything about you and made you feel like the most important person in his life. He knew women well, because he thought like one. I once had a conversation with P where I asked him jokingly what he would do if he had 3 girls, (kids). He said, "I'd be glad. Their wombs have power." Me: "Really?! Most men want a son." Him: "That's because they don't understand God." He had a special reverence for women. He understood their spiritual power. -But still, was very much a man. I feel like this song, along with many others, were a glimpse into how well he understood romance & love. He was prolific not just sonically, but lyrically. He also really loved this choreography. heart [purple heart]

His statement "Their wombs have power" is very interesting. He certainly understood the process of pregnancy due to he and Mayte's two pregnancies, especially Amiir's pregnancy. Mayte writes in her book on pp. 132-133 (chapter 6) that while she was pregnant with Amiir, "my husband never said a word about my body except to tell me, 'You're beautiful.'" Then, in chapter 9, she wrote about how he convinced the OBGYN, over the phone, to give he and Mayte the heart monitor. (I suspect he paid the OBGYN a nice chunk of change for that heart monitor lol.) Mayte wrote that she and prince both read What to Expect When You're Expecting and watched videos on how to care for a new baby. I think he had a deep respect for the process of pregnancy and the formation of a new human life from having been so involved while Mayte was pregnant with Amiir, as well as, sadly, from experiencing fatherhood for such a short period of time.

.

In terms of spiritual power, I wonder if he's referring to the way that women inspired so much of his music or if he's alluding to something else (e.g., beauty, sex, lovesexy)?

.

Also, it's interesting, because Mayte said something very similar to Lala about Prince being so detail-oriented. Mayte said the following in an article in The Daily Mail back in 2006:

‘Prince is an incredible perfomer on stage, but when you meet him he's not at all aloof; he's funny and charming and very aware. Now I know other men, I can see how in tune he is with women, it's the way he notices every detail about you. ‘He'll comment on your hair, or acknowledge a new pair of earrings and when he looks at you he makes you feel like you're the centre of his universe - that's very beguiling.’
