He obviously didn't get rid of all of her items. smile

.

I don't remember where she mentions him taking her clothes in her book (and I'm not in the mood to search for it in the book), but I found it here (via Entertainment Weekly):

"14 stories about Prince from ex-wife Mayte Garcia's new book"

http://ew.com/books/2017/04/04/prince-stories-mayte-garcia-most-beautiful/

.

(Entertainment Weekly content; "Excerpt from the book")

'Prince kept an entire wardrobe staff at Paisley Park to work on his outfits: pattern makers, cutters, seamstresses. [...] He also liked to steal her clothes: “If I bought a pair of amazingly cool tailored pants or a hot jacket, he’d take them to wardrobe, have the pants hemmed up, and tell them to put shoulder pads in the jacket so he could wear them.”'

.

He really had no shame, did he? lol

.

Although Prince's general M.O. was to "move on" from one thing to the next, he did keep/collect certain aspects of his life, namely, his music (via the vault); his clothes, shoes, jewelry, and accessories; and some artifacts of his career. It also appears that he had an ability to "detach" himself from the emotional aspects of clothes, music, and other items. By emotional aspects, I mean the association that a particular has with a certain memory, person, place, or feeling. I can't really give as many examples of him "detaching" himself from the emotional aspects of clothing that used to belong to Mayte, but there are plenty of examples of him "detaching" himself from the emotional aspects of songs.

(Inside Prince’s Paisley Park Archives: 7,000 Artifacts Cataloged, Many More to Go, APRIL 20, 2017, New York Times [online],

Take, for example, the song "The One". There is no dispute that he wrote "The One" for Mayte; he says "My-my-my Mayte, I am the one" at the end of the album version. However, after they divorced, he performed "The One" (in a medley with "The Question of U" and "Fallin'") during concerts on a fairly regular basis (See PrinceVault, http://princevault.com/in...=The_One). I have watched a video of him playing "The One" (as a medley with TQOU and "Fallin'") from the Musicology tour (2004), I believe at a concert in Omaha, Nebraska. He's wearing a matching pant-shirt set that is white with purple polka dots. He starts off with TQOU, and plays this incredible guitar solo...he is making love to his guitar! Then he goes into singing "The One". Even though he and Mayte had divorced, and he was married to Mani in 2004, he was able to "detach" himself from the emotional aspect of "The One", the emotional aspect being that he wrote the song for Mayte. It's like, when he was on stage, he was creating his own reality or he was "in the zone". He would be so into a guitar solo, or playing the keyboards, or feeding off the engery of the crowd, that nothing could phase him. At least that's how it appears to me when I watch videos of his performances.

.

There are numerous songs that he wrote for or about one woman, and then performed these songs later on when he was no longer with the woman who inspired the song.

.

"Pink Cashmere" (Anna Fantastic) - They were together for 1988-91ish, but he performed this song during shows in 1994, 1995, 2002, 2004, 2006-2007, 2016 (http://princevault.com/index.php?title=Pink_Cashmere).

.

"Call My Name" (Manuela) - They were together from 1999/2000ish to 2006 (married 2001-2006), but he performed this song during shows in 2004 and 2016 (http://princevault.com/index.php?title=Call_My_Name).

.

"7" (Mayte) - They were together from 1992-2000 (married 1996-2000), but he performed this song during shows from 1993 to 2010 (http://princevault.com/index.php?title=7).

.

"The Max" (Mayte) - He performed this song during shoes in 1993 and 2013-2016 (http://princevault.com/index.php?title=The_Max)

.

"The Morning Papers" (Mayte) - He performed this song during shows in 1993 and 2007 (http://princevault.com/index.php?title=The_Morning_Papers)

.

"Soul Sanctuary" (Mayte) - He performed this son during shows in 2002 (http://princevault.com/index.php?title=Soul_Sanctuary)

.

"One Kiss at a Time" (Mayte) - He performed this song during shows in 2002-2004, 2006-2007 (and not prior to 2002) (http://princevault.com/index.php?title=One_Kiss_At_A_Time)

For some reason, I don’t think he could ever detach himself from remembering her and the life they once shared. They had a unique relationship. Hence, the reason Shelby J. said he always talked about Mayte. Also, the reason a woman he briefly dated told the story of how he’d show her videos of Mayte dancing and “tell little anecdotes” about her. It’s been said he considered her the love of his life. I think what they once shared was never replicated in other relationships he pursued. So, I think, whereas in the past he was able to reassign meaning to some of the songs he wrote for others, I get the feeling it didn’t work so well when trying to do the same for songs he wrote for Mayte. I really feel that way about “7.” I heard him perform it somewhere in 2010 and he even used the sound effects of her sword. I don’t know if that was intentional or not.

I don't disagree with you, amethyst68; you make some really good points. At the same time, I think if he was not able to detach himself emotionally from the Mayte-inspired songs, he would have avoided performing them. I think he was able to detach himself while performing some Mayte-inspired/Mayte-related songs, but not able to detach himself from other Mayte-inspired/Mayte-related songs. The reason I think this is that some of the most intimate songs that he wrote for Mayte, or songs that he wrote for or about her and/or their son, he either never performed or he didn't perform them after they divorced. (All of the following information is from PrinceVault (princevault.com).

.

Betcha By Golly Wow - Per Mayte's book (probably chapter 9), this music video was filmed in the hospital where Amiir was born, but after his death. The only known live performance was November 20, 1996 at Oprah's Harpo Studios in Chicago.

- Until U're In My Arms Again - He performed it live on May 2, 1998 at Paisley Park. PrinceVault says it was performed occasionally in shows in 1998, but I checked every available setlist from 1998, and it only is in the setlist for May 2.

- The Holy River - He performed it occasionally in shows in 1997.

.

- Sex in the Summer - He never performed it live.

- She Gave Her Angels - He never performed it live. This song was supposed to be on the children's album that he and Mayte were making, called Happy Tears.

In September 1996, he performed it on Muppets Tonight, lip-syncing over first half (piano portion) of the song

- Comeback - He never performed it live.

- Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife - He never performed it live (for the public). I'm unsure if he played it live or played a recording at their wedding.

- Let's Have a Baby - He never performed it live.

.

As far as Amiir, he performed a song (UUIMAR) about him ONE time. Amiir's death was probably the worst event of his adult life, and he performed a song about Amiir one time. To me, that just speaks to the depth of the loss. Even on stage, he just didn't go there.

.

Unfortunately, I never saw him live. I'm going to have to look for some live performances of "7" after they divorced to see if I can hear her sword's sound effects.

He doesn't look at all detached emotionally from any of those performances you listed He is a very passionate performer who doesn't just walk through his songs on automatic pilot. I am not sure that is possible for him to do so, but he could have been able to put himself in a head space where the songs either took on a meaning somewhat altered from their original intention or put himself in a head space in which he relived what they originally meant to him (like a method actor or something.) Some songs are tied to things too painful/revealing to feel comfortable around. Some songs probably are more universal. FOr example maybe doing the "the One' at any point was more about what Prince wishes he was (or was trying to be) rather than what he really was able to be.. He wasn't able to be completely loyal even right after he wrote it after all. in 2004, when he performed it again maybe he was trying to be the One where Mani was concerned. All I am saying is that both the songs and the performances of those songs came from his little self and can't be completely detached from the psyche that originally created them and the emotional place they came from. But songs do take on different meanings as someone ages or uses them over and over. If Prince used a song to serenade more than one woman, its only himself and God who know which woman he was thinking of when he sang it on stage in 2011 or whatever year.

So I totally agree with you, purplerabbithole. You expressed my sentiments better than I did. Maybe I didn't express my original point very well when I said:

It also appears that he had an ability to "detach" himself from the emotional aspects of clothes, music, and other items. By emotional aspects, I mean the association that a particular has with a certain memory, person, place, or feeling.

.

Perhaps "detach" wasn't the right word. But yes, for some songs, he was able to make them take on a different meaning (The One, Call My Name, 7) or he became so engrossed in the emotion of the song itself (The Beautiful Ones is probably the best example). And then for other songs, there's no way to make the song take on a different meaning because there is such a strong association with a particular person/place/event (Let's Have a Baby, Friend Lover Sister Mother/Wife, The Holy River).

.

I do wonder if he ever performed songs so that he could go back and "re-live" an experience or feeling. He said that "the past is the past" but I think it's only human nature to think about, reflect, on, or reminisce about one's past.

.

purplerabbithole said:

- The Holy River - He performed it occasionally in shows in 1997.

.

I wonder if members of the family have returned items to her that were hers as she has been back to Paisley Park on at least two occasions since he died (for his memorial service as well as the memorial concert in October 2016).

He was such a trip!

the pic of him was in Afshin’s book with notation outside Tokyo hotel November 2002. Guess he didn’t get rid of all of Mayte’s items?

At least that's how it appears to me when I watch videos of his performances.

.

There are numerous songs that he wrote for or about one woman, and then performed these songs later on when he was no longer with the woman who inspired the song.

.

"Pink Cashmere" (Anna Fantastic) - They were together for 1988-91ish, but he performed this song during shows in 1994, 1995, 2002, 2004, 2006-2007, 2016 (http://princevault.com/index.php?title=Pink_Cashmere).

.

"Call My Name" (Manuela) - They were together from 1999/2000ish to 2006 (married 2001-2006), but he performed this song during shows in 2004 and 2016 (http://princevault.com/index.php?title=Call_My_Name).

.

"7" (Mayte) - They were together from 1992-2000 (married 1996-2000), but he performed this song during shows from 1993 to 2010 (http://princevault.com/index.php?title=7).

.

"The Max" (Mayte) - He performed this song during shoes in 1993 and 2013-2016 (http://princevault.com/index.php?title=The_Max)

.

"The Morning Papers" (Mayte) - He performed this song during shows in 1993 and 2007 (http://princevault.com/index.php?title=The_Morning_Papers)

.

"Soul Sanctuary" (Mayte) - He performed this son during shows in 2002 (http://princevault.com/index.php?title=Soul_Sanctuary)

.

"One Kiss at a Time" (Mayte) - He performed this song during shows in 2002-2004, 2006-2007 (and not prior to 2002) (http://princevault.com/index.php?title=One_Kiss_At_A_Time)

.

Oh I totally understand that. I meant in the long haul of their marriage not lasting. Couples lose children all the time sadly and go through some very tough times, but they find a way to make it if their love is strong enough and they are equal partners, but theirs wasn't and that is the facts. Not trying to be negative, it is what it is. You can believe they were supposed to stay together, or the true loves of each others lives if you please. That is your right. You’re right couples do “lose children all the time.” Numbers don’t lie. More than 70% of couples who lose a child end up in divorce. That’s a fact. I, personally, know of 4 couples that have lost young children or infants and they all are divorced. These were couples that had been married a number of years not just 10 months. Unless you’ve experience the loss of a child, you’ll never understand.

Notorious, December 1999

But a pleasant work environment cannot by itself explain why The Artist seems not to have aged in the last ten years. And it’s not just his forever '80s fashion sense; he's got a Peter Pan-like youthfulness that's downright weird, considering he's a 41year-old workaholic who sleeps two hours a night and does zero exercise. How can he be so well preserved? When pressed for his secret, he leans in and says, “Your magazine probably won't print this, but I don't believe in time. I don't count. When you count, it ages you. If they say you have to retire at 65, you get old at 65. People get hung up on numbers, they push their kids into it and everybody's walking around counting and becoming alcoholic, getting ulcers, evil tempers, and just being realty mean. I said to Mayte, 'One day you'll be 35,' and she just jumped. She still needs to work on it.” This is the first time he's mentioned his wife, Mayte, who now lives in Spain where she's working on starting her own dance company. They're not technically married, because as part of The Artist's disavowal of all things contractual. he had their marriage contract dissolved. But it's obvious that he stilt loves her. While Graham may have been responsible for the philosophical education of The Artist, Mayte seems to have had an equally significantly impact on his emotional growth. "One thing Mayte taught me was how powerful it is to ask someone for forgiveness. Just think about what an aphrodisiac those words are: Will you forgive me? Because deep down. what we all want most deeply is to learn to forgive. If you can't, you're already in hell.”

It’s also because of Mayte that he's begun to confront his intense possessiveness” it wasn't long ago that he wouldn't allow her to be interviewed without him in the room, “I had this thing where I didn't like anyone to touch Mayte: someone would come and hug her and I would shoot her a look, and this change would happen. At first I didn't know where all the tension was coming from, but it would be like there was suddenly air in the room if I saw someone touching her. And then I realized the tension was coming from the words, "my wife.” Before she was "my wife” Mayte was a child of God. And if a man hugs her wrong. that's just another child of God doing wrong and he will ultimately pay a price for that." The Artist pauses for a moment and then adds. "and I'll be there to watch him as he gets kicked down the stairs."

I just re-read pages 156 to 228 of The Most Beautiful (chapters 8 and 9, and part of chapter 10). As excruciatingly difficult as it was for Mayte and prince to cope with the loss of Amiir, prince and Mayte were able to recover from it, to some extent, according to her. Bear with me, I'm going to "connect some dots" with the next several paragraphs.

.

On pages 222-223, there's a reproduction of a letter that prince wrote her before they were married, and one of the sentences he wrote was, "eye don't mind them (disagreement) with u because eye know we'll always be 2gether." Following the letter, paraphrasing what Mayte wrote (in order to avoid copying too much from the book), Mayte and prince fought a great deal during the last year of their marriage, but "there was a long stretch before that when I truly believed we'd be alright" (p. 223). Mayte wrote about how her husband was reading various books about different spiritual/religious traditions; basically, he was soul-searching. Then, she wrote about how they celebrated their first anniversary (Feb. 14, 1997) and following that, they took a trip to Egypt. She wrote that after the trip to Egypt, "When we came home, it was as if we'd started a new life together, reborn to each other" (p. 228). In March/April-ish of 1997, she starts tracking her body temperature and felt ready to have another baby. (They didn't stop trying to have another baby following Amiir's death, but another pregnancy didn't happen.)

.

I've watched the footage of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame introduction that prince does for George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic (May 6, 1997 in Cleveland, Ohio). He brought Mayte up on stage with him; he never brought his significant other on stage with him at award shows. (Here's the video: https://youtu.be/EbS2dIADcsg). So, this video appears to corroborate what she wrote about them being "reborn to each other" because they both appear relaxed and happy during the induction ceremony; their demeanors are totally different than what they exhibited during the Oprah interview in 1996 following Amiir's death.

.

Mayte becomes pregnant again during the summer of 1997. Not long after she becomes pregnant again, prince meets Larry Graham after prince's August 23, 1997 show in Memphis, Tennessee. Soon afterward, Larry Graham and Graham Central Station start touring with prince for the remainder of the JOTY tour. Then, LG continues to perform with prince in one-off shows after the JOTY Tour ends in early 1998. Mayte mentioned in the book that Larry had introduced prince to the Jehovah's Witness faith. She also mentioned that the first few months of the pregnancy were going well, but she and her husband were't going to be too excited until around November 19.

.

On November 19, Mayte starts bleeding, goes to the doctor, and finds out she has a miscarriage. She wrote that "The reality of another crushing loss hung in the air between us" (p. 235); it was devastating. Looking at PrinceVault (princevault.com), during the mid-90s, Prince regularly played the song "The Cross" (95-98). He continued to perform the song as "The Cross" through the end of the Jam of the Year Tour (January 13, 1998). He plays it again at a one-off show on January 22, which is the last time he performed it as "The Cross", according to PrinceVault. Then, starting on February 28, 1998, he starts performing this song ("The Cross") as "The Christ." So, it appears that the miscarriage, which was particularly devastating due to the previous loss of Amiir, plus prince's exposure to LG's JW faith, seems to have caused a paradigm shift in prince's mindset in late 1997/early 1998.

.

So...I have "connected some dots". (I feel like I just did some detective work). (And time for me to go to bed.)

Yes, Mayte has said Prince was very vulnerable after their losses and Larry basically took advantage of it to the point where she felt alienated from her husband and in her own home.

U: It really touched my heart when I read in a recent interview that God is the most important thing in your life now. How has your relationship with God changed or influenced the songs your writing these days and do you have plans to ever record a religious album?

prince: Knowledge of The Truth had permeated every song eye have written in the past 7 months. Even the funky ones about romance. Adam and Eve were supposed 2 stay 2gether, no matter what. There is never a reason 2 break apart. Only reason 2 heal.
