Everyone has preferences.

As to your opinion, P's been called on it. I think Spike Lee did, in the past, but they buried the hatchet over it. I forget the interview where they addressed this.

Yup, it was Spike Lee. He called Prince out publically and rightfully so in my opinion. IIRC it was purely with regard to his professional decisions rather than his personal choices. Again, rightfully so since his personal preferences are his business as you suggest.

I have the interview he and Spike did where they settled the matter...can't bother to search for it right now though. Prince went on to help Spike finance the Malcolm X film so I imagine they're cool with each other.

Spike L33 was full of shit anyway b/c he's married to a light skinned redhead woman and in most all his movies, his love interest has been way lighter (and taller) than him. pot calling kettle not black enuf!

I don't agree with this statement from the poster at all. Prince and every Man or Women have a TYPE and what they consider a TURN-ON.

So Spike should not have married her because she is light and a redhead. She is still a black woman.

I'm saying Spike has no business calling Prince out for his color choices in women when Spike himself is also suspect. light is light no matter what ethnic group it falls under.

Maybe Spike is casting his "wife" to play opposite all of the characters that represent him. And, he's pretty short, so go easy on his casting pool's height.

I really don't think -- minus Prince's superstar status -- it makes much difference. He's not the first person, male or female, to have a "type." I'm sure you and the original poster have yours.

The significance seems to be this: For decades, Prince has been casting his type in his movies and videos. With the rare exception, that woman has been lighter than a paper bag. He's constantly singing songs about black pride.

I still think it's a bit different with Spike. His female characters tend to be more diverse than just really light-skinned. And, I'd assert they tend to display a whole lot more assertiveness and self-worth than Prince's proteges and leading women.

Doesn't matter what your skin color is, if all you're going to be in a Prince fantasy is a lingerie mannequin or a spineless muse.

So what is your point We as black people need to get off of the light/darkskin thing. Everybody is black when the lights go out and yes I think P could have featured a wider vary of ethinic groups in his videos and I do not have a problem with Spike making that statement.

The visual image is very powerful however, Spike and Prince are free to marry and date whom every they want with out their lightness/darkness being an issue.

I also wonder will anyone fucking acknowledge Nona Gaye how much darker did she have to be to please some of you.

check my earlier post, i gave props to the mocha sistahs with Nona in first place. And yes, BLACK PPL NEED TO GET OFF the light/dark thing because it serves no purpose or benefit especially since there are so many hues and colors not just in black people but all people. You don't see folks tripping on Hugh Heffner for only dating Blondes! This thread was misleading b/c it totally dismissed the darker skinned women that prince has dated and featured in his vidz. And why is it just color? Prince never featured any fatties in his vidz either or dated any that I'm aware of. He's only rarely dated women taller than him too. He's not the only artist that appears to have a type. Mariah Carey for the longest always had white or latin love interest in her vidz and noone said squat. But Prince always gets called out for this bullshit. I've been hearing it since I was a kid. I think the color is symptimatic (sp) of something else.

Prince is supposed to be wrong for being attracted to women who are of a similar complexion as him? In other words, he's wrong for dating women who look like him? How often are dark skinned women chastised for dating dark-skinned men exclusively?

I think you need to grow up.Flaunting someone for their musicianship is not the same as flaunting someone for their beauty.
You and everyone else can't possibly think its some kind of coincidence the things I have noticed.
I don't think any of yall read everything I wrote, there are differences between the way Chelsea,Twinz & Bria are put in the spotlight as opposed to Tamar & Shelby.

IMHO he goes wrong when he tries the have the woman dress like him and possibly act like him.Have a certain look to them is what Im saying.

I saw this in the 80's, Sheila, Lisa and Wendy (MAINLY Wendy), the band ( ok all guys but work with me here k), Sheila's band, THEN when the Parade era came full swing they all were dressing similar as well. And it was mainly Sheila who I thought he was having done this with clothes wise. And more so musically wih Sheila. As to trying to mold her into a replica female versin of Prince(him). I dont think its skin color at all I think its more then that I just cant put my finger on it yet confuse

No I didn't miss it. You stated that Prince was a "colorstruck jerk" (your words not mine). The whole point of your initiating this thread is to suggest Prince is a jerk because he largely ignores black women, or shows preference to light-skin. My point is, so what? Prince is a light-skinned man. If he shows preference to light-skinned females then he's showing preference to women who look like him. How does this make him a jerk?

And I never said anything about the preferences of dark-skinned men.

that - I honestly believe - was more about image of the band. He also had the guys go a certain direction too. The Time had it the Family, Vanity 6, etc. I kind of liked that band unit feel. It came out of the 70s when dudes had some SERIOUS outfits on the R&B scene. He was just a bit more subtle. Go check some EWF, Commodores, LTD, PFUNK- they got looks for the band.

As far as women and skin color - again, within the black community the redbone, high yellow, black, mocha, chocolate, caramel etc is just one more way to keep some people worrying bout superficial things that keep them from realizing their potential and dealing with issues with in the various communities that a serious problems. I recall President Obama not being "black enough" at first. Not even a "where does he stand on issues important to me". Pretty sad really.

I was on a black message board last week and this subject came up. One poster said that Prince is color struck and that he only dates white, light skinned, or latina women. She said that he hasn't dated a dark skinned lady and that Nona Gaye wasn't a real relationship. She also said that Prince told Nona that he would never marry her because of her complexion. Does anyone whether this is true?

Also, on the same message board they said that Prince ordered a veil be put over the face of the girl in the Kiss video because she was a dark skinned black lady. Does anyone whether this is true?

And kissing his ass....Prince is a colorstruck jerk,I'm sick of ya'll not calling him on it.
Because Bria has "good hair" and light skin, she gets all this attention,he "flaunts" her,and is part of the 3-cd set, talent or not.
Chelsea Rodgers-who looks like that-gets a website, models in perfume ads,get a song with her first & last name in the title,AND if that's not enough,he goes on & on at his site about how he can't help but stare cause she's supercute.
He takes the Twinz to the fashion shows....more flaunting.

Now,hmmm, let's see what did Tamar & Shelby J. get?
Oh,they get to sing with him.but that's basically it.
They have to know how to REALLY SANG,cause he isn't going to have any other use for them, but Bria doesn't have to have a strong voice, her album comes out anyway, but Tamars' didn't.
Tamar and Shelby don't get called supercute as far as I know, and he hasn't done anything else to glorify their kind of beauty.

Don't forget he had a black girlfriend in high school(Kim Upsher, anyone?)but soon as he became famous, those kind of women aren't good enough to have on his arm anymore.

He's sending us a message, stop actin like ya'll don't see it..Latin,Arab,Indian,bi or multiracial is fine, but if your racial makeup dosen't give you flowy hair down to your waist, stay back,I'm too fine for you.

So what?

To thine own self be true...He knows he has a type, its blatantly obvious and he doesn deny it. Im not his type (Tall dreadlocked black lady) but his taste in women doesnt affect his music imho. I appreciate the odd reference to hair texture, cream or butterscotch thighs might urk the more insecure, but at least he's honest.

I also have a preferred 'type' of bloke that im attracted too... why should a person change what they desire because of outside interference?
One minute they want peace……

Then do everything to make it go away. rolleyes
