It did seem odd that there was only one concert for Europe. However under one weeks notice i do find quite unacceptable and with the lack of communication these days from Prince I think now is the time for him to release a statement and an apology.

We had tickets for Angie Stone in London and had booked time off work and an overnight stay in a hotel - we had a recorded telephone call the afternoon before saying the concert had been postponed - needless to say we lost the money for the hotel and car parking and also the 2 days holidays booked from work. It seems to me that just under one week notice is pretty good these days!!!!

i found this on housequake, it may answer some questions for some people....

OK, here's what I can tell you.

However before I start, please be assured that at no time are we being "elitist", "playing games", "only giving half the story" or any other phrases that could be ended with the word "arseholes". As many of you now realise, we posted the information about Dublin being off some time ago purely in the best interests of all fans, not just HQ based ones.

Yes we do get information from a very reliable source now (no, not THAT one) and please understand that we cannot name names and at times have to only give out certain points, again though for the best interest of the fans. We all (the mod team, Aaron included) do this purely in our spare time, receive no payment, no favours, and expect nothing in return other than sheer courtesy.

That said, I thought I'd share with you what I know and what I believe regarding some of the reasoning behind the Croke Park cancellation.

As you know, there was originally supposed to be a European Stadium Tour this summer that incorporated dates in Holland, Milan, Denmark and Dublin. An agency were booked to liaise with local promoters and dates were tentatively lined up, however it turns out there was a scheduling conflict between the two agents who book events for Prince and he could not commit to the tour and asked sales to stop.

Whilst the promoters for Milan, Denmark and Holland respected that request, it seems that the local promoter in Dublin, MCD, went ahead and put tickets on sale in the hope that this could force Prince's hand into playing the gig. MCD have now vehemently denied this is the case and have even offered to prove that ticket sales were signed off and authorised to go ahead

Prince subsequently was faced with another commitment and again requested that Dublin be taken off sale. In fact once it was known that the tour was not going ahead, we ourselves sent some pretty blunt messages to NPG base camp pointing out what was best for the fans. It should be made clear that Prince himself took a great deal of interest in stopping sales, however we were informed that MCD did not take this step. MCD themselves have informed us however that they were only aware that Prince was planning to cancel as of Friday 6th June and did not agree the cancellation until very late on Monday 9th June

Once it became very clear that the whole Dublin situation was a mess, Prince tried to look at moving things around in order to save the date, however it proved logistically impossible.

Looking at the whole situation, my personal opinion is that things could have been handled better on Prince's side, however the vast majority of the blame has to go to MCD. As "Rsp" wisely pointed out in the cancellation thread, Prince is contractually bound with regards to ticket sales and cannot publicly speak out without facing legal action so he was in a difficult position until it could be officially cancelled.

As I'm sure you appreciate, I've "broken cover" a little on sharing this information as, yet again, I think it's what's best for the fans, however for once I'm in the unusual step of defending Prince. I've been on the receiving end of cancelled gigs myself (I still haven't got over not seeing the 1999 tour in London !) and know how the easiest thing to do is blame the guy himself but please take the time to digest my ramblings above and think about how this has all played out and who anger and disappointment should be directed at.

I hope this all makes sense and once again, please be aware that this is sensitive material, some of which has come from reliable sources and some of which is my personal opinion based upon the evidence I have to hand. If MCD or any other parties feel aggrieved at what is posted here then please feel free to take it up with me personally.

Totally understand and kind of get this, shit happens! Not going to let it bother me anymore.

One question though... What was he doing that he could not get out of and in favour of playing for 55,000 confirmed people?

Would be interesting to know the answer to that one.

Anyone?

I don't think we'll ever find out now, if it was going to come out, it would have been released in the last week after pressure from fans/media etc, now the concert date has passed, the media will lose interest in the story.

Prince has has done himself no favours giving no explanation from his official camp for this cancellation, the media will just blame it on his 'eratic' behaviour, rightly or wrongly.

Will be interesting to see the tickets sales the next time he announces a UK gig, I'm sure any promoter will insist on some heavy penalties in the contract for a cancellation.

The taxidriver who drove me to Dublin Airport today said it was due mistakes made by MCD (?) and not Prince that the concert was cancelled. He said Croke Park was paid by Prince's staff last week and apologies for any inconvenience were made.

I don't know what to believe anymore..it's all vague and indeed we probably will never konw. That being said - I (over)spent two lovely days in Dublin and Bray smile

Really sorry everyone but just found this statement -

http://www.crokepark.ie/p...a_id=23773

also just found a statement on mcd.ie website:

It is with great disappointment that the PRINCE concert scheduled to take place at Croke Park next Monday 16th June 2008 will no longer be taking place due to reasons beyond the control of PRINCE and MCD Productions.

While plans are underway to try and reschedule the concert for 2009, no details are confirmed at this stage thus ticket holders can obtain a full ticket refund including booking fee from their Ticketmaster point of purchase from 09.00 hrs Friday 13th June 2008.

MCD & PRINCE wish to apologise for the inconvenience caused to the 55,161 patrons who purchased tickets, to Croke Park, their customers and all the individuals who have worked tirelessly to bring the show to Dublin.

I am devastated. I have just told my boyfriend and he is so angry. He bought me a gold circle for my birthday. I know he should have tried elsewhere but I was so upset that I was not in the circle that he surprised me with one that he got on eBay. So he has no chance of getting the money back. We have booked flights and arranged accommodation. I actually cried and I am a 36 year old man.

You should send email to seller, if you have no luck you can complain to ebay, I did last year and got a full refund.

What i found strange from the outset was that Prince never did a press release/statement/big fanfare about this show himself like he has done in the recent last few years, i.e "21 Nights in London", "Musicology tour", "MPLS 7/7/7" etc etc.

Someone dropped the ball on this that's for sure and the recriminations will no doubt go on well into the next half hour or so.

I remember back in December 97 I went to Miami Beach, Prince was supposed to play 3 gigs @ Glam Slam club just before xmas. I had everything bought and paid for, trans-atlantic flights, tkts, hotel etc. I phoned the venue the night before the 1st gig to confirm everything was still ok and was told yes, all was fine.

Flew to Miami, arrived late at night, went to hotel, slept, up next day, walked down to Glam Slam an into the little reception/ticket office to be greeted by the phone ringing off the hook and the guy on the ticket desk say "Hello Glam Slam. Sorry the shows are cancelled." RING! RING! "Glam Slam. Yeah sorry its been cancelled".

I couldn't quite believe my ears! Naturally I was gutted and after sorting out refunds on my gig tkts, I spent the next couple hrs walking around in a confused, stunned daze.

I found myself eating something at a little cafe and got chatting to this woman who told me how she had been struck down by some awful illness. Anyway it left her half paralyzed. She seemed such a positive person after all the shit she had gone through.

After that I began to put things in a little more perspective. Yes I was disappointed that Prince had cancelled at less than 24 hrs notice but I had my health and i was in beautiful, sunny South Beach, Miami.

Sorry. I rambled on there. Hey at least you guys got 6 days notice for Dublin.
I think maybe, as others have suggested, you should go anyway, after all you've already spent the cash on flights and hotel. Enjoy Dublin. Have a few beers. Take that well earned break.

All the best guys smile
