Has anyone mentioned Blenheim on here yet? haven't read the whole thread... it's not like there hasn't been precedent. Albeit, then, 'out' of Prince's control.

Why do people keep bringing up a cancelled concert from almost 20 years ago??? Prince has done 100s of scheduled shows since then and I'm sure he has cancelled less than 10 of those. So I'm really confused why folks are still harping about something that happened in 1991.

quite true, anyway that show was canceled cause the land owner wouldnt let the show go ahead cause the promoters didnt get the sufficient insurance so that was out of princes control and he made up for it with fans not getting a refund by dipping into his own pocket. in his 30 year career how many concerts has the guy done and how many has he canceled i bet the percentage is low.

how many concerts are canceled by different artists every year for whatever reason but they don't get the same shit has prince is getting.

nod Even though I don't agree with how THIS one's being handled, Prince has been a performing machine for the last 30 years, especially when compared to current artists. I think he has a very low percentage of cancelled concerts, not aftershows, but actual scheduled concerts.

With all due respect Swanny - this list is a very misleading. On the one's I'm familiar with , I'm dure the RDS in Dublin was never actually confirmed and the only gigs scheduled that year were the two in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. prince didn't cancel the July 6th one. This was cancelled as there were not enough tickets sold. Those who had bought tickets were accomodated at the July 7th gig. smile

I'm as peeded off about croker as the next guy (perhaps more so as my two kids were so looking forward to it) - but lets' keep to the facts. The facts as I can see is Prince in acting the prxxk. Wether it's his fault or not he should come out and make a statement, and should have cancelled months ago. He's very quick to react when someone puts a clip on youtube!

nod Besides in my earlier post, I was referring to cancellations since '91, which looking at this list there really havent been that many compared to how many shows he's done. Now post the list of all the shows he DID do and compare it to the number of shows done by another artist of his calibre.

that cancellation list is very misleading also because in 1987, there was a lot of terrential rain happeing in the UK so prince tried 2 reschedule those dates 4 indoor venues but couldn't.
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

why the hell are they compiling a list of canceled concerts dating back to 1981 jesus shit happens, if he decides to cancel a concert its not cause he just got up that morning and says i cant be bothered with that gig, compare his cancellations to other artists and you would see he hasnt got a bad rep in concerts.

sad Just feel bewildered. Only found out about 3 hours ago, after finally allowing myself to get hugely excited. This was my 30th birthday pressie and family/friends had all clubbed together to get tickets/flights/accomodation etc. Didn't look like it was going to be a reality for a long time, managed to overcome all the obstacles and then boom. Over. sniff.

Can't bring myself to be mad at the guy though. Love him way too much.

I'd just like to know why it took so long to be cancelled. Why did tickets go on sale and posters and promotion around Ireland while all the other European dates were never confirmed?

Surely well over a moth ago when the other European dates that had been penciled in were cancelled, that would have been the time to officially cancel Dublin. That might have saved a good few people who were late booking flights and hotels a trip and more wasted cash.

Well, Having arranged to travel to Dublin, booked flights and hotels, annual leave child care, chicken cat and dog care and husband mollification I am now down to the tune of over £1000 that's $2000 in your money and I have received no formal notification that this concert is cancelled. I would really appreciate knowing why and maybe it's time this old girl found someone else to listen to!

i'm sure this won't take away the dissappointment from the cancellation, but perhaps this will encourage Prince to bring back an official website, so that we will know for sure what's official if its posted directly on his own website.

The "high quality broadsheet" did not talk to ANYBODY for these stories. It just fished its info from the Net.
What kind of journalism is that?!

Poison Prince is still receiving plenty of negative press this morning, not that he cares on anything. These two are from The Irish Times, a high quality broadsheet, I can only imagine what the tabloids are saying...key point is that 55,000 fans are still in the dark, there is no work from him "yet" on the cancellation. details posted here

article 1:
June 13, 2008
Still perplexed by Prince? You’re not the only one
Filed under: Cancelled gigs — Jim Carroll @ 9:28 am
It has been a bad week for Irish gig-goers, as first Prince and then MIA cancelled shows.

On Wednesday, MIA pulled her entire European tour, including a planned date at Dublin’s Tripod. This cancellation was later attributed to her wanting to get her nails done, go shopping and start gardening.

Recent weeks have also seen Santogold, Mystery Jets, Gregory Isaacs, Black Mountain and Animal Collective cancel or postpone Dublin shows, citing everything from illness and missed ferries to “unforeseen circumstances”. The latter is usually taken as promoter-speak for poor ticket sales.

But sorriest of all were the 55,000 Prince fans, after the pop star cancelled his only European show, which had been due to take place in Dublin’s Croke Park next Monday.

Promoters MCD said the cancellation was “due to reasons beyond the control of Prince and MCD Productions”. In an unprecedented move, MCD also cited sales of 55,161 tickets. This quashed most rumours about a poor-selling show.

So why was it cancelled? When the Dublin date was announced in February, it was said in the initial press release to be one of just three European shows in which Prince would perform his greatest hits for the last time.

However, the other shows in Milan and Paris didn’t go ahead. While there were also online rumours of mooted shows in the Netherlands and Denmark, Dublin was the only Prince date in Europe for which tickets went on sale. Was there something different about the Dublin gig that would have made it viable as a one-off show?

If the Italian and French shows weren’t on, why would Prince fly with his band and crew across the Atlantic the week after his 50th birthday to play just one show? It wouldn’t seem to make any financial, logistical or practical sense.

As long ago as March, experienced industry observers in the United States were telling On The Record that they thought it unusual that Prince would play just one show in Europe.

So was the artist really to blame? Early on, some people inferred from the healthy ticket sales and from Prince’s silence that this was the case.

However, in a post on fan site Housequake, it was pointed out that Prince is contractually forbidden from commenting on what happened. So his silence may not in itself be meaningful.

Many of the other allegations on the site made about the reasons for the cancellation were dismissed as false by an MCD spokesperson.

At the time of The Ticket going to press, no statement has been made by Prince or his agents explaining why there will be no purple rain at Croke Park next week.

Article 2:

Prince: not a creep, not a weirdo, not on YouTube (or in Croker)
Brian Boyd on music.

SINCE Tuesday, websites, airwaves and newspapers have been speculating over why Prince's Croke Park gig is not taking place next week. It remains to be seen just who is responsible, but one thing's for sure: the 55,000 ticket holders aren't the first of his fans to question whether the Purple One really deserves their devotion.

The annual Coachella Festival takes place every April in a parched California desert. Coachella is known for getting feuding musicians to reunite - usually for a huge pay cheque. Over the years, The Pixies, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Gang of Four and Kraftwerk have all renounced their "never again" vows in order to play the festival.

The "reformation" acts at this year's festival were Portishead and The Verve, but they aren't all that big in the US, so organisers were left with a major headlining slot to fill.

Brought in at a fee of $4.8 million, Prince had the desired effect (tickets sold out within seconds). However, his Coachella performance may well be remembered for something other than the being the festival's most expensive act ever.

Midway through his set, Prince launched into a very unlikely cover version of Radiohead's Creep . He extended the song by a few minutes, gave it a soul sheen and changed the lyrics from "I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo" to "you're a creep, you're a weirdo".

A friend of Thom Yorke's was at the show and texted the Radiohead man about the song. Anxious to see what Prince had done with Creep , Yorke went to YouTube to view fan footage of the performance. When he found it, however, the video wouldn't play and a message stated that "this video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by NPG Records".

NPG (Prince's own label) had contacted Google/YouTube and told them the Coachella performance of Creep was copyrighted by Prince and couldn't go up on the video-sharing site.

Prince does have form here: he already had most of his clips erased from YouTube, citing "copyright" issues, and has otherwise generally hassled any fans who so much as post a photograph of him on a fan website.

There is now a stand-off between YouTube, Prince and Thom Yorke as to who actually owns the footage. Yorke has been quoted as saying "Tell him to unblock it - it's our song". It appears YouTube didn't know what to do and took the clip down on Prince's request while waiting for someone to come up with a robust legal definition of who owns it.

Meanwhile, Prince fans (and non-fans) have been playing a cat-and-mouse with whoever is responsible for taking down YouTube clips. The Creep footage keeps getting posted and keeps getting blocked. It was available on Pitchfork for a while, but now that too has been removed. If you search for it outside of YouTube, you will find numerous links, but it seems that the clips are taken down within hours.

This sort of tangled legal scenario was never envisaged when the music copyright laws (now hopelessly out of date) were being written. What is clear is that if Prince had recorded the version of Creep he played at Coachella, he would have been in clear breach of copyright laws. You can only get a licence to record a cover if you agree that you won't change the lyrics of the song. This is to stop people putting in unsuitable/ libellous/political lyrical messages into well-known songs. If Prince had wanted to use the line "You're a creep, you're a weirdo" on a recorded version of Creep then he would have had to get advance permission from the song's copyright holders: Radiohead and their publishing company.

Where the law stands on a live, as opposed to a recorded, cover version remains a moot point - there are rights in composition (Radiohead) and rights in performance (Prince), but which outweighs which? If Radiohead want the clip unblocked, the lyric change breach is surely one legal avenue they could explore.

The stupid thing is that Prince's cover of Creep has been described by reviewers as "spine-tingling" and "one of Coachella's best-ever moments".

If you really want to piss Prince off (consider it moral retaliation) hunt down the Creep clip and e-mail it to everyone you know.

i'm sure this won't take away the dissappointment from the cancellation, but perhaps this will encourage Prince to bring back an official website, so that we will know for sure what's official if its posted directly on his own website.

I agree. I have read all the positive and negative responses and agree with both. At the end of the day someone fucked this up either P or MCD, and the fans ar'nt happy with the reason for the cancellation (due to circumstances beyond their control) I think if one or the other could throw some more light on the subject things would cool down a bit., even if P doe'snt want to start up a new website, then a polite message to Org or HQ from his camp would be nice. A little bit of respect goes a long way.

Regarding the shut down of 3121, I think it is really fucking rude to close it down with no explaination, It would be nice to know if it's closed for good or under construction.

His personal life is nothing to do with us, he's entitled to have as many parties as he wants. I just love his music, and want him to continue making it.

Prince is entitled to a personal life and what he does in it is upto him, but he is in the spotlight all the time, when he throws these partys in LA for his celeb friends and plays gigs in his house, he knows/wants the press will report it, thats all fine when things are going well, but a few weeks later when you cancel a gig at the last minute for 55,000 fans who have spent lots of time and money on him, it understandably piss*s them off.

I was at the O2 in VIP stuck behind a drumkit for £250 each ticket on the 11/08, I had tickets for the aftershow, I turned up with 2,000 fans and queued up from 11pm till 1am, for the Indigo2 staff then to come down the line saying Prince wasn't playing and there was no entertainment gonna be put on for a £25 aftershow, coz he decided he had more important things to do than entertain 2,000 fans who queued up and paid good money, apparently he was out on the town with P diddy who had turned up for the main show. On top of that, its 1am at the O2, no tubes, so I had to pay £40 for a cab after a 1 hour wait to get back to my hotel, if they would have told us before midnight he had gone off partying, we could have just got the tube back to wherever we were all going, that shows you how much consideration he gives 4 his fans ....

I didn't buy tickets for Croke Park as I was still seethig over the VIP and aftershow fiasco at the O2, I figured I was not going to have him take the p*ss after being a fan for 25 years and going to god knows how many gigs, maybe more fans will now vote with their money ....

Prince the Artist is god, Prince the man is The Devil.

That might piss people off but it's just how I see it.

disbelief

"Money don't matter tonight"...well, unless you're a fan who just lost a bunch of it, apparently due to some prima donna changing his mood. shrug

A good reminder to never make plans around a scheduled Prince show! How many has he cancelled now?
