Eastern Conference Playoffs, Conference Semifinals

Game 1

Chicago Bulls 93 Miami Heat 86

After the Chicago Bulls defeated the Brooklyn Nets in game seven on the road with a depleted lineup, no one would have been surprised if they had been blown away by the Miami Heat in this opening matchup of this series, especially since they were still without Luol Deng, Kirk Hinrich, and Derrick Rose. But it was the Miami Heat that came out flat and lethargic, as the week off from winning their first round series made them rusty. The Heat only scored 37 points in the first half, and league MVP Lebron James was held to just two points in that half. Some of that could be attributed to the Bulls defense, but much of that was just Miami missing easy shots.

Miami would eventually get something going in the second half, taking the lead and going up by as much as seven points. But the Bulls refused to go away, and down the strech it was their reserve players forced into starting roles that would carry the day. Nate Robinson scored 27 points for the Bulls while dishing out nine assists, despite having his upper lip busted at the end of the first half and requiring stitches. Jimmy Butler scored 21 points while grabbing 14 rebounds, and Marco Belinelli scored 10 points including a couple of clutch 3 pointers down the stretch. Lebron James got hot in the second half, finishing with 24 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists, but Dwyane Wade had a subpar game, scoring only 14 points, while no other Miami player managed to score in double digits.

Will the Miami Heat bounce back? Will the Chicago Bulls get Luol Deng and Kirk Hinrich back in the lineup? And will Derrick Rose succumb to the enormous pressure from the fans and the Chicago and national sports media and suit up? Stay tuned...

Chicago leads series 1-0. woot! excited highfive

Is Mr. Rose still seating on the bench cuz he needs to take his punk-ass home and show up to work in the Fall. Did anyone else hear the story Van Gundy (Jeff) told Mike & Mike this morning about Pat Riley asking a player could he give him 1 or 5 minutes in a game...? Nail on head.

MJ wouldn't have been sitting on the bench still talkin' shit about he may play. Rose annoys me... if I thought they could get another player, I'd say kick his ass to the curb after this season. Bulls have one without him and they are only one player of way of being able to run with the big boys. Though I'm realistic their chances of beating Miami are slim at least these mean have risen to the occasion, that's more than I can say about weak-ass Rose.

Western Conference Playoffs, Conference Semifinals

Game 1

Golden State Warriors 127 San Antonio Spurs 129 F/2OT

The San Antonio Spurs trailed for most of this game, but it was less a case of playoff rust, as they also had seven days off from their last game, but more of the Warriors being on fire. That was especially the case for Stephen Curry, who scored 44 points for the game along with dishing out 11 assists. Harrison Barnes scored 19 points for the Warriors, as well as Klay Thompson, but he fouled out with about three minutes remaining in regulation. The Warriors led by 16 with just four minutes remaining in regulation.

But then San Antonio made their run, led by Manu Ginnobili, who scored 16 points for the game. (More on him later.) The Spurs went on a 18-2 run to tie the game and send it into overtime. Tony Parker led the Spurs with 28 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists, Danny Green scored 22 points, and Tim Duncan scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds despite suffering from stomach flu. But it literally came down to the last shot, as Golden State led by one with just 3.9 seconds in the second overtime, but Manu Ginnobili would hit the game-winning 3 pointer to give the Spurs the dramatic come-from-behind victory.

San Antonio leads series 1-0.

Eastern Conference Playoffs, Conference Semifinals

Game 2

Indiana Pacers 79 New York Knicks 105

The Knicks looked to bounce back from their disappointing performance in game 1 of this series, and they broke out of the gate early. The Knicks led by nine in the second quarter, but Indiana would claw its way back into the game, going into halftime down by just five and even taking a two point lead late into the third quarter.

But then the Knicks exploded. Carmelo Anthony, who struggled with his shooting in the last game and even going back into the first round series, led the Knicks surge. They went on a 28-2 run that put the game away in a rout. Anthony scored 32 points for New York, while Iman Shumpert added 15 points and Raymond Felton added 14 points. Paul George led the Pacers with 20 points while David West added 13 points, but the entire team seemed to vanish in the fourth quarter, Both teams now look forward to taking the lead in this series this Saturday.

Series tied at 1-1.

Game 2

Memphis Grizzlies 99 Oklahoma City Thunder 93

This game went back an forth for most of the contest, and while Kevin Durant scored 36 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and dished out nine assists for Oklahoma City, it would be Mike Conley Jr. that would be the hero of this game forthe Grizzlies. He hit two critical jumpshots down the stretch including a 3 pointer that put Memphis up for good. Conley fell just shy of a triple double, scoring 26 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out nine assists, whiule Marc Gasol scored 24 points, Zach Randolph added 15 points, and Tonyt Allen added 12 points. Derek Fisher was strong off the bench for OKC, scoring 19 points, but the rest of their lineup struggled to score. The series now goes to the Blues City.

Series tied at 1-1.

The NBA named George Karl as Coach of the Year today. He coached the Denver Nuggets to a franchise record 57 wins and the fourth best record in the NBA during the regular season. It took him 25 years to win this award, after bouncing around with several teams including the then-Seatlle Supersonics going to an NBA finals, and surviving throat cancer. Karl worked wonders with a lineup that lacked an All-Star, was beset by injuries to several starters and twisted its way through a brutal early-season schedule in which 22 of the team's first 32 games were on the road. The Nuggets led the league in scoring, fast break production and points in the paint with no dominant scorer - Ty Lawson led Denver with 16.7 points a game, which ranked 31st in the league. They went an NBA-best 38-3 at home, winning their last 23 games at the Pepsi Center in the regular season and going 24-4 overall after the All-Star break.

Karl received 62 first-place votes, followed by Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat with 24 votes from a panel of sports writers and broadcasters. New York's Mike Woodson finished third and San Antonio's Gregg Popovich, who won the award last season, was fourth. Karl had 404 votes overall, far outdistancing Spoelstra's 190.

Game 2

Chicago Bulls 78 Miami Heat 115

After the Chicago Bulls shocked the Heat and stole a victory in game one, Miami was determined to come out with more energy in this game. And they did just that. Lebron James scored 12 of his 19 points for the game in the first quarter, and the Heat blew out to a 14 point lead at the half.

But the floodgates really opened up in the second half, as Miami went on a tear, and the game suddenly became marred with fouls and fisticuffs. Nine technical fouls were called in this game and one flagrant foul was also called; seven of those fouls were on the Bulls, and two players (Joakim Noah, Taj Gibson) were ejected from the game. Ray Allen actually led all scorers with 21 points, and in addition to Lebron James, four other Heat players scored in double digits. Marco Belinelli led the BUlls with 13 points, but the Bulls were clearly outhustled and out of sync both physically and mentally tonight. Despit tongiht's rout, which was the Bulls' worst playoff loss in franchise history, they do go back home even in this series. But will Luol Deng and Kirk Hinrich be back in time for game three? And will Derrick Rose suit up and play? Stay tuned...

Series tied at 1-1. mad mad rolleyes disbelief

Eastern Conference Playoffs, Conference Semifinals

Game 3

Miami Heat 104 Chicago Bulls 94

The Chicago Bulls were hoping to bounce back from a disastrous game two and get some support in front of their home crowd. The game pretty much started out like the last game, with a lot of intensity and even some fisticuffs, as Lebron James took down Bulls reserve center Nazr Muhammad and was called for a technical foul. But then Muhammad shoved Lebron James to the floor and was quickly ejected from the game. Notwithstanding that episode, this game was played at a high level on both sides, and all five of the Bulls starting rotation scored in double digits. It was all the more remarkable for Chicago, as they essentially played a seven man rotation after Nazr Muhammad was ejected from the game, since Luol Deng, Kirk Hinrich, and Derrick Rose were still not available to play. Carlos Boozer led the Bulls with 21 points.

The game was a nip and tuck affair throughout, and neither team was able to gain a sizable advantage until the final two and a half minutes of the game. Lebron James had a relatively quiet game, scoring just 25 points, but he hit a couple of key shots in the final two and a half minutes to seal the victory for Miami, including a 3 point shot that gave them the biggest lead of the game up that point. But the Heat also got huge contributions from Chris Bosh, who scored 20 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, and reserve Norris Cole, who scored 19 points including all three 3 pointers he took. The severely short-handed Buills gave another valiant effort, but in the end they ran out of time, and time may be running out on their season.

Miami leads series 2-1.

Western Conference Playoffs, Conference Semifinals

Game 3

San Antonio Spurs 102 Golden State Warriors 92

The Golden State Warriors had been giving the San Antonio Spurs all they could handle in the first two games thanks to the frenzied play of the "Splash Brothers," Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, and they came into game three at home with all of the momentum. But it was Tony Parker would would explode in game three, scoring 25 points in the first half and scoring 32 for the game before exiting early due to a calf bruise. But he was picked up by teammates Tim Duncan, who scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Manu Ginnobili, who scored 12 points for the game. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson had an off night, with Thompson leading the Warriors with 17 points but shooting only 7 for 20 from the court, and Curry scoring 16 points but only shooting 5 for 17 from the court. Compounding matters for Golden State was Stephen Curry injuring his ankle in the fourth quarter. He finished the game but is listed as a game time decision for the next game. Golden State already faces an uphill climb, but it could be even steeper if Curry is unbale to playgoing forward.

San Antonio leads series 2-1.

Game 3

Oklahoma City Thunder 81 Memphis Grizzlies 87

The Grizzlies were looking to take the lead in front of their home crowd, and while they led for much of this game, it was a nip and tuck afair for most the contest. Memphis would play some physical defense on Kevin Durant, and while he ended up scoring 25 points for the game, he would struggle in the fourth quarter, scoring only two points. Reggie Jackson played a decent game for OKC, scoring 15 points while Kevin Martin and Serge Ibaka each added 13 points, though Ibaka only shot 6 for 17 from the floor. Marc Gasol led the Grizzlies with 20 points while Mike Conley Jr. and Tony Allen each added 14 points.

But it was miscues by OKC that would cost them this game. OKC tied the game at 81-81 with just under two minutes remaining in the game, but Memphis would take the lead from the free throw line and go up by four points. Kevin Durant then drove to the basket and was fouled with 39 seconds left in the game. He shot 91% from the free throw line this season, but in this instance he missed both free throws. Memphis would rebound and dribble the ball upcourt, but Kevin Durant would steal a pass and deflect it to Derek Fisher, who then drove down the court in a fast break opportunity, but instead of driving to the basket for a quick two points with 18 seconds left, he pulled up to shoot a long 3 point attempt which bounced off the back of the rim and was rebounded by the Grizzlies, thus securing the victory for Memphis.

Memphis leads series 2-1.

Game 3

New York Knicks 71 Indiana Pacers 82

This game was ugly in a lot of ways, and itr was particularly bad for the New York Knicks. The Knicks struggled to score all night, and while some of that may have been due to the Indiana defense, a lot of it has been the continued struggles of the Knicks roster outside of Carmelo Anthony. The Knicks were held to a playoff franchise low 33 points in the first half, yet only trailed by three points at the half.

But in the second half, the Pacers began pounding the Knicks into submission. Roy Hibbert was a beast in the paint, scoring 24 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. George Hill added 17 points, Paul George added 14 points with eight rebounds, eight assists, and five steals, and David West added 11 points but also grabbed 12 rebounds. Carmelo Anthony scored 21 points for New York, yet no other player even managed to score in double digits. Amar'e Stoudamire scored seven points in limited action after returning from injury, yet their point guards Pablo Prigioni and Jason Kidd did not even score a single point in this game though they combined to play for 44 minutes. The final score was not really indicative of how much of a blowout this game was, as Indiana dominated much of the game.

Indiana leads series 2-1.
