Is Janet the Next Cher?

More than a week has passed since I saw Janet Jackson at Radio City Music Hall, and I’m still smiling, much to the chagrin/surprise of a friend who asked me, the day before the show, why I was bothering. He’d seen her a couple of times, the most recent in 2002, and seemed to be saying, What has she done for us lately?

True, there hasn’t been a new album since 2008; the tour was titled “# 1’s,” after a hits collection released in 2009. Her last tour was beset by cancellations and postponements caused by, we were told, migraines and vertigo. And of course in 2009 her brother Michael died, so there was a huge opportunity for melodrama and maudlin spectacle. But instead for almost two hours she reminded the capacity crowd that she has taken care of her recording career for two and a half decades. More than 30 songs came spilling out, one seemingly more familiar than the last, and, like most well-written and –produced pop songs, they all slipped the bands of time. “Control” — charged and confident and bubbling — seemed as appropriate for a 44-year-old woman as it did for a defiant post-teenager, much as “Half Breed” did for Cher at 60 and 27. And while Jackson, like Cher, was not blessed with the strongest vocal chops, the two women each have an innate pop sensibility and a flexibility/malleability that has allowed them to roll with the punches and trends. And they are both tireless workers: Jackson danced, sang, changed costumes (with no malfunctions) so hard and so good-naturedly during the Radio City show that there was barely a minute for her to talk the audience. (The tribute to Michael, which featured some backdrop pictures of him, was classy and understated.) As Prince said during one of his own more recent shows, “So many hits, so little time.”

This is not to say that Jackson won’t ever make another important record; Cher, after all, had her biggest hit, “Believe,” when she was 52. If Jackson hooks up with the right producer or even reunites with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the co-architects of most of her hits, she could find herself back at the top of the charts. But whether or not that happens, she will endure. I’m looking forward to hearing her sing, prance and giggle her way through “Escapade” 20 years down the road.

I've not seen prior tours-this was my first tour...But if you read the other 9 pages..you will see that some think it is fine to lip synch.....To me I like Live..

SHe looks great, can still dance, but my opinion was that she relied too heavily on tracks in the back, lip synching too much, and mediocre dancers/band..It is much less bells/whisltes which is what I looked forward to...but a good portion was lipped..or tracked...She has a beautiful voice not to be wasted like that...esepcially on a supposedly up close and personal tour..

I went to both Toronto shows, a lot of those fast songs you posted were not performed at the second show, but I had closer seats than the first.

Well, I had always wanted to see Janet and went to A/C last night to see her. I actually had tickets for Saturday show as well, but I have sold them off.

I did not like the overall sound at the Borgata and there were 2 huge speakers on either side hanging down over the stage....that did seem to block people...

It was great that she did just her 'hits' ..it was nice to hear all of those at one time...I have to say though that maybe because my last concert was Prince I had super high expectations and was spoiled..I also love Prince more.... I realize Janet is not a musician but she is very talented obviously...

Her voice is great, she sounds great live...which brings me to the point I was not happy with. She has the ability to sound almost the same each time she sings a song...But there was way too much lip synching absolutely.background tracks, and sining over recorded stuff. It was a real disapointment. The songs in her first set (before change of clothes) were fast and those were the songs she lip sang alot to. The thing was at this venue you could often tell when she was singing and not..I caught a couple slip ups..and I was not looking for it. Her voice got louder than normal when she did sing that is how you could tell..

I actually did not even see this whole thread till this morning when it was driving me crazy of 'did she just really lip synch most of that concert?'..I had to check out if I was crazy..why would such a talent rely on that so heavily..

Also, while she sweat her tail off and danced alot, there was a piece of me that thought she was a bit sluggish...I have seen her give better moves/faster...I just now see she had a show in DC Thursday night, and A/C Friday and Sat...Maybe she is tired..I would like to go tonight only to compare the shows to see if I had an offnight...but I sold my tickets.

The crowd was pretty calm too..not alot of dancing and I did not feel that connect with the audience that often comes with other artistes...She does seem really sweet though..

One thing-I did not particularly like her band, backup singers or dancers theme she had. I know it was a smaller venue, and was supposed to be different but maybe it was the theme she was going for I don't know..

'Maybe I am the only one to see last night this way, but actually I think that the lip synching and band playing over tracks just sort of soured it..I expected more from a talented performer such as her..

I would of course see her again someday...and it was a treat to hear all 'oldies' and hits all in one shot...that in itself was a treat..but I so wished she did sing more live because I appreciated it when she did...I would still suggest going to see her..I still enjoyed myself but if you know you are going to have lip synching in advance maybe you will not be surprised as I was.

These were my thoughts as well about the first Radio City show. That skintight plastic catsuit the first half pretty much ensured that she could barely move and I was concerned that I'd have to watched her like that through the entire show. I also didnt like that she started the show late and THEN showed the Rhythm Nation video and The Best Things in Life Are Free. I coulda watched those at home!

I fully expected lip syncing, so I wasn't surprised at that, but was surprised at HOT MUCH lip syncing she did, I feel like it was a good 90% of the show. Does she really have that little confidence in her own voice?

Also the band was boooooring! If you ask me they weren't even needed, she coulda just put on the album track and lip synced to that and let that be the end of it. Plus they were dressed all in white looking like waiters from The Cheeesecake Factory. :/

I've always hated Radio City and this was no exception. You can't see shit if you're on the floor. Plus the pacing of the show with the costume changes and the instrumental while the band was playing brought down the energy immensely. I wasn't gonna leave, but I was happy when it was over. My last concerts were two Prince shows where I stood and screamed and shouted and sang the entire time. I don't know WHAT I was supposed to do at this Janet show? Sing? Sit? Stand? Wait for her to come back out after ANOTHER costume change?

She chose the smaller venues to connect more with the audience, but Prince was in a sold out msg and I felt more of a connection with him and how he was interacting with the crowd than I did at the janet show. It just seemed like she was going thru the motions and would do the same show the next night and the next night and the next.

It was just meh for me, but I honestly didn't expect much because even though I'd never seen her live, I already knew what to expect. Would I see her again? Probably not. I'll save my money for when Prince comes back to NYC.

ETA: I love and respect Janet, she's been one of my idols since I was a little pre-teen girl trying to find a place in this world as a Black girl and Janet was definitely a role model for me. I will always respect her place in this game, her talent and her career. If she wants to lip sync thats her perrogative. I knew that going in, so I wan't surprised, but FOR ME, the show was a bit disppointing overall. Im glad I can say that I saw her live, but I probably would not pay for another show.

Coming from Cannes JANET JACKSON will arrive in Vienna on Friday, May 20th in Vienna sponsored by Red Bull.

JANET JACKSON, born as the youngest child of the Jackson family, has been a prominent figure in popular culture for over 25 years. She has sold over 100 million records worldwide; she is ranked as one of the best-selling artists in the history of contemporary music. The American Recording Industry lists her as the eleventh best-selling female artist in the United States, with 26 million certified albums.

Only very few personalities reserve the right to be called a charitable celebrity. JANET JACKSON beyond doubt is one of them. Since accepting a volunteer position with amfAR, JANET has travelled internationally on behalf of the foundation. At each of her numerous public appearances, she has worked tirelessly to heighten awareness of HIV/AIDS as a threat to social and economic stability and to underscore the urgent need for continued AIDS research. “HIV/AIDS is a pandemic which requires our immediate and continued attention. So much progress has been made, thanks to leading organizations such as amfAR, in the fight. Combination therapy has made HIV a maintainable disease, but sadly, there is still no cure and it continues to spread at alarming rates. HIV/AIDS is a continuing hazard, both in the Unites States and abroad. This is why I am honored to join with amfAR to bring awareness and help raise the much needed funding for their work," said JANET.

In 1997, "Together Again" fast became the new anthem for those suffering with AIDS, their families and friends. "I believe we have other lives," JANET states, "I don't believe in the finality of death. I wanted to write about friends who have died of AIDS, but without being mournful or sad. I wanted to celebrate their spirit. I'm pleased that “Together Again” is just that -- a celebration, a confirmation that the energy of love will never die." A portion of the proceeds from the song was donated to amfAR.
“We are profoundly grateful to JANET JACKSON for joining Life Ball,” says amfAR’s CEO Kevin Frost. “She brings incomparable grace and a history of dedication to the fight against AIDS.”

Janet Jackson signs on for Becca Cason Thrash's Liaisons au Louvre international fundraiser in June

Raising the bar once again on charity fundraising, Becca Cason Thrash has scored an entertainment coup for her Liaisons au Louvre II benefit in Paris in June with announcement that six-time Grammy Award-winning superstar Janet Jackson will perform.

With more than 100 million records sold worldwide, Jackson will privately entertain the intimate gathering of 250 notables attending the Grand Nuit, the finale of a three-day Paris extravaganza benefiting the vaunted museum. The tony frolic is organized under the auspices of the American and International Friends of the Louvre, of which Cason Thrash is vice chair. The June 13 performance evening will take place under the patronage of French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.

In a published statement, Henri Loyrette, Louvre president and director, said, "Janet Jackson is one of the world's greatest artistic treasures. Accordingly, we are profoundly honored, and believe it is most fitting, that her performance in the Louvre Museum will be yet another masterpiece captured under our glorious glass Pyramid (the iconic Louvre addition designed by I.M. Pei). I believe the evening with Janet Jackson will be a great coup for our institution!"

Funds raised from the evening and surrounding activities ($10,000 per person for visitors from outside of France) will help restore a Louis XV drawing room that will be featured in the Louvre's 18th century decorative arts galleries, which will reopen in 2013.

Jackson rarely performs in such intimate surroundings. The singer recently performed at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo before nearly 70,000.

I heard first that the costumes did not make it but apparently only a 3 hour drive so who knows how true that is...But I would think that she sweats so much in that catsuit she must have lost weight and getting some new/additional stuff made...Maybe she is too hot in what she wears...
