I prefer Alicia Keys because I think her music is more mature and less pop/top 40. I'm 40 years old so thats probably more of a musical taste preference. Beyonce is the better vocalist and entertainer, but I prefer Alicia Keys music style over Beyonce. Beyonce's music is better for the clubs but I dont go to the clubs, LOL...I mostly listen to music in my car...

I love Unbreakable...and Fallen, and others.

Just as you assumed that somehow her music was too intellectual for the likes of me to understand. Honestly, I can perhaps understand someone enjoying her music on a purely superficial level, but to claim that any of it has any sort of depth or intellect is too much. lol

While we're at it, I want someone to explain to me what a "1st alto voice" is, because I learned that the terms for female vocal classification are, in order from highest to lowest tessitura, soprano, mezzo-soprano, and alto. I'd also understood based on my own observations of Beyoncé's voice that she is a mezzo-soprano, albeit a freakishly versatile one.

Oftentimes in 1st alto is assigned to any indivdual who sings at the higher alto register. I sang in a choirs for many years, and we had the following vocal classifications:
1st Soprano (Think Mini Ripperton's Loving You the highest note that she hits)
Soprano (Think Denise Williams)
1st Alto (Think Beyonce)
Alto (Alicia Keys
Tenor (Generally assigned to many male vocalists) Michael Jackson being an exception. Prince could sing a variety of registers.
Bass (Barry White)
Baritone (Paul Robison).

Now there are even "tighter" vocal classifications that are above my scope particularly in classical music. Take 6 those guys had unbelievably tight harmonies, that I really still cant quite figure out.

Those are not vocal classifications, those are parts. and NO @ putting baritone under bass -_-
And Beyoncé sung 2nd Soprano in Destiny's Child for YEARS (although she can sing any of the female vocal parts, and has). There's not really much DIFFERENCE between 2nd Soprano and 1st Alto, but they threw 1st Alto at Kelly in DC4 because it's IMO, the least important part, and she sucks.

I really loved Alecia Keyes first two albums...after that I was really disappointed when she started trying to change her image to compete with the likes of Beyonce--whose music I could never get into. neutral Alecia didn't need to do that...but now I wonder if that was more of a manufactured image via Clive Davis than what I see and hear now! If so, she should have stuck with Clive Davis... confused

I just "You Tubed" the different videos and (pseudo-videos) for Alicia Keys and Beyonce's "Put it in a love song". For the so called "hottest" R&B artists in the game right now. That song leaves a WHOLE lot to be desired. It is a very weak song in my opinion (both vocally and musically). I just actually heard the song and looked at the many video cuts they have for the song. It's garbage. Catchy maybe, but garbage none the less. I think I have indigestion now.

A decent Alicia Keys performance to a song that we all know. It gets a little shakey towards the end though, but most of the performance is ok.

Uhh I still have not learned how to embed a youtube video in these posts, so any help would be appreciated. In the meantime, you can click onto the link below.

Both have their less-than-stellar moments, but if I'm going on simply catchy pop songs - Beyowulf. Alicia's arrogance over shadows any sliver of talent she might have. Each album cover the camera has gotten closer and closer and closer. Next time, we'll get a look at her sinuses.

Vocalist: Beyonce's the clear winner. Alicia has limited range and tends to strain. With that being said, however, Mrs. Beatz's sound is more soulful.

Dancing & Entertainment: Beyonce. I don't think I really have to get into it.

Writing: Alicia times two. The bulk of Beyonce's material is extremely shallow and overrated. A part of the big draw to Alicia from day one was how she came across lyrically. To a lot of people she seemed like an old soul in a 20-21 year old's body. And while none of it was groundbreaking you could see that she had something a little different to offer. I think as she ages she'll only get more mature.

Instrumentalist: Alicia. I don't think I really have to get into it.

Both of them have their strongpoints but I'll say this...If Beyonce someday decided to add more substance to her material she'd basically be the total package. Learning to play an instrument and advancing your writing skills is a lot easier than learning to become a better singer and performer. Training or no training, artists are born with the voices they have. And some are just naturally more gifted in that department. Stage presence, same thing. You don't have to have a voice at all to own the stage. And I'm not talking about being the greatest dancer. Presence is a certain spirit, star quality that some entertainers have and some don't. From a technical standpoint, Christina is a better vocalist than Beyonce and Ciara's a better dancer. BUT, she's got a certain appeal that they lack.

Mrs. Z is young, she's not even 30 yet. As she gets older, settles down, maybe have some baby camels her work will most likely grow as well because her life experiences will change. It's only natural. You can't be Single Lady-ing it for all eternity. So, you know, in my personal opinion, I like them both. If you ask me today who'll possess the better discography years from now I'd probably go with Alicia but if somethin hits Beyonce internally it has the potential to be amazing.

I asked if someone could tell me what a "1st alto voice" is, and it was slightly rhetorical, since one can't technically have a 1st alto voice, or an alto voice period. One can SING a 1st alto PART, however, but Beyoncé doesn't even do that (except when she's doing 1st soprano, 2nd soprano, and 2nd alto as well biggrin ).
And there is a difference, yes. 1st alto is nonessential. The only real difference between three and four part harmony is that 1st alto is thrown out. Which is why they moved Kelly to first soprano in DC3 (and ONLY because Michelle couldn't do it), while Beyoncé stayed at 2nd soprano because she was lead and she sounded the best.

Yes because Beyonce is a paragon of intellect, as is writing in an orange font.

GORL GARGLE. It doesn't have to be an outright insult. Ad hominem, specifically ad hominem abusive, refers to an argument that attacks the opponent rather than the opponent's argument. This information can be found if you consult many lovely sources, like Wikipedia. lol Do you read ANYTHING?

Anyway, my point is obviously that Beyoncé's music HAS substance (as all music does in SOME way). However, if one doesn't want to SEE that her music has substance, which is usually because one is a pressed-ass musical snob who should be hung publicly for stupidity, then one won't. I guess this is fine if you enjoy being ignorant. Just know that I Am... > your essential bodily functions, and B'Day > your life and the lives of everyone posting in this forum.

And you quoted me with bullshit, so if you didn't think we would see eye to eye, you could have kept your sagging ass in that chair.

Beyonce definitely has time to grow as an artists, but she will "lose" some things as time passes. She will have to rely less on the booty shaking and the grinding onstage, and more on her raw talent. When artists get older (particularly female artists) they start to become desperate and if there is no reall substance behind their talent, then off the clothes go, and a Playboy centerfold is on it's way. When all else fails...take more clothes off. We don't need another "nipple-gate". As Beyonce ages, perhaps that irritating vocal register that she sings in will get a little lower and mature.

Alica can defintely grow musically. And she can chose "how" to use her vocal instrument. Personally I also think Alicia sings at a register that is probably at the very upper limits of her range. Perhaps she should lower it a little more, and she won't be straining as much.
Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?
