$ Minutes is a great dance tune. The middle eight is pure escapism. i don't care what it's about. Probably the video will enlighten us...

Madonna's first album was dance, the enhancement to disco. Her second album was produced by Nile Rodgers and some of her True Blue album songs have a blackish feel as well. Open Your Heart. True Blue sounds like a cheap Motown track.
Keep It Together, Rescue Me, most of the Erotica album,. Bedtime Stories... they're black.
With a bit of fantasy, even the song Music sounds black. just imagien a black woman singing it. she does commercial pop-black songs.

and I don't think her new songs sound like a hip-hop record. thank god her songs are faster than Mariah Careys granny-rhythm songs...

thumbs up! You're dead on it.

I don't really think anyone has a problem with her music sounding "black" as you say (or r&b most would say). I think the problem we have with it is that it sounds like shit. I'm all for Madonna doing anothe r&b-influenced album. I love the first album. LAV has its moments. And Bedtime Story is great. But this... after 3 songs... God, what is she thinking? Or singing, for that matter...

Do u need a hug or something? lol

I'm kind of confused with the intention of your post. Is it really a bad thing to not be a big star in the US when so many now are just maufactured or reality show contestants? I'm sure that the producers she chose for this album indicate her desire to try and get on the charts again in the US but being on the top of US charts certainly deos not automatically mean it's a good album. There's a lot of crap on the top of the charts these days and I couldn't care less where her album lands on it as long as the music is good. For her to say that the reason was in part working with an english producer is a truth-- she was making a euro dance inspired album and stuart was known for that (he certainly wasn't known as a hot american hit maker), I don't think it was so off base for her to point that out. shrug

Yes - I always need a hug.

I just thought it was funny that she just totally disregarded the plain fact that her international audience is who's responsible for 75% of her income from record sales, that they are the ones who can help her claim she sells 8 -10 million of each album, that she tried to position it as it's just a matter of which producers she uses and not that she still has more loyal fans and is a bigger star in other countries. It's just a plain, simple fact and it's so like her to just brush that off and say it's because she worked with an English producer - on the one hand, I think she's quick and smart to answer like that, on the other, it's like come on, just admit (like Tina Turner has for 15 years now) that you're bigger in Europe.

well like all business she is marketing herself to her audience. we all know you don't get any American fans by saying the rest of the world has a better taste in music.

this is exactly my problem with the song. the beat is actually cool for me, it's the fact that the lyrics sound like they were harvested from a bunch of other songs that never made it to completion. there is no consistency or coherence, no real theme.

i can dance to it at the clubs but i have no interest in listening to it anywhere else. and still...why does she only have 4 minutes to save the world? from what? or whom? lol too much mess for me.

Yeah, I heard it in a club last night. And I shook my ass to it. So I can now appreciate it on that level. But I don't think I'm ever going to get the urge to just listen to this song on my iPod or stereo.

Interestingly, it was played back to back with Janet's "Feedback." I preferred "Feedback" for the dancefloor, but apparently I was one of the few who did, judging by the reaction of everyone else. Kids these days. Sheesh.

i remember when i started going out Music had just been released and the floor could go from empty to full with just the few opening secs of it's remixes.

Send us some links to your songs,so then I can take your comments seriously...

Another over-emotional fan. There's no need to get so defensive. Madonna's lyrics are all over the place. That's not an opinion. It's a fact. If you can tell me what the hell those cliches I mentioned have got to do with the song then go ahead. If not, then you're just showing yourself to be a zealot.

over-emotional? confuse And um...that's not what I call defensive. I honestly want you to show some credibility to back up your overarched comments. If you're such an expert on what makes a good song, I want to hear what your songs sound like because they must be a hell lot better than Madonna's.

Otherwise, it's hogwash. I could sense you were an armchair critic from a mile away.

I may be a zealot, but not an unfounded zealot. I have plenty of credentials to back up my opinion that Madonna is an incredible artist. I'm not a huge fan of her music, but sometimes I think it's great. On the whole, when you take into account her work as a media manipulator, performance artist, cultural trendsetter, etc - there's a lot to be admired. I think it's hilarious when these amateur online critics step in and tear apart her every move.

Errr, that's a contradiction in terms. Every zealot is an unfounded one because they are by definition unreasonable. lol

And it's interesting how when you praise her, you praise her for NON-MUSICAL things. If I like an artist it is ONLY for musical things. I don't regard media manipulation as something to be admired like you do. I can't LISTEN to someone manipulating the media, can I?

Also, you're ignoring the fact that there are 4 or 5 MADONNA FANS on here who agree with me. You can't just brush that aside. It's interesting how you've made no attempt to show why you think we're mistaken, but instead have responded with immature ad hominum attacks. You're doing your side of the argument no favors by totally ignoring the crux of the issue. So.....tell me again how "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" relates to the theme of "4 Minutes"? lol

When a zealot says "it may not be brilliant" that basically translates as "Yeah, it is a bit lame, isn't it?". lol And if the theme is "saving the world" then what do all the sex lines have to do with it? And saving the world from what? Sorry, it's a mess. Plus, you've admitted you don't even have an opinion about the song and yet you condemn mine anyway. And you're calling ME a freak??? lol

Actually..

It is my opinion that these producers have been listening to Crystal Ball, and other Prince CDs..

I would not be suprised if some Prince-sounding music was on her CD from these producers/collaborators..

This 4 Minutes seems like a take on the theme of the lyrics of Crystal Ball. Prince/Sussanah

The horn synths on this song are a bit heavy

Probably having an interest in art and photography has helped her in knowing what will make a great image and surrounded by friends that happen to be fantastic photographers also helps...
I love the third image- it reminds me of the "Like A Virgin" photo sessions- I think it's the light and her tussled hair.

Material Girl strikes again: Madonna already making millions from her new album
By Chris Hastings,Arts and Media Editor

She might be just months away from her 50th birthday, but Madonna is proving she's still the ultimate Material Girl when it comes to making money from her music.

The singer, who is the most successful female recording artist in history, has earned millions with her new album 'Hard Candy'-even though it does not go on sale until next month.

She has signed lucrative contracts with major companies including Vodafone,Unilever and Fuji, which will use her music to sell products from hairspray to mobile phones.

The deals, which involve more than half the tracks on the album, have not only earned the London-based mother of three a not-so-small fortune, they will ensure her album receives free global publicity ahead of its release.

Madonna's deal with Vodafone means the network's customers will be able to listen to seven tracks one week before the album's worldwide release on April 28.It is the first time an artist has launched an album on a mobile phone.

Her new single "4 Minutes",which features Justin Timberlake,is already being used in a commmercial for Unilever's Sunsilk hair care range. The advertisement, which premiered during the Super Bowl,is set to go global next month. It includes more than a dozen images of her at different stages of her career. The track will also be featured in the upcoming movie 'Get Smart'.

Madonna has also licensed "Miles Away",expected to be the album's second single,as the theme for a drama called Change on Japan's Fuji TV.

In a move that is likely to infuriate some fans, the eagerly awaited video for "4 Minutes",with Madonna and Timberlake, will make its debut online rather than on MTV.

John Reid, the president of Warner Music Europe and vice-chairman of Warner Music International,Madonna's label, said "It's not about upfront payments,it's about selling the product. She is a very smart businesswoman who wants to sell alot of albums. These companies want their customers to know about their links with Madonna. They are going to promote the deals and her music online and in extensive television, radio and press adverts."

He added: "If it all goes to plan then there is no reason why other acts shouldn't strike similar deals".

Madonna is not the first artist to make her work available to advertisers, but past commericials have tended to feature songs only after they have been released.

Claire Beale, the editor of Campaign, the advertising industry's trade paper, said: "These deals prove that Madonna is the most marketing-saavy musician in the world. She's a case study of what great marketing is.Using adevertisements to promote a new single in advance of its release is very shrewd indeed".

Stuart Clarke, the talent editor of Music Week, said: "When you first hear about "4 Minutes" being used for a SunSilk campaign, you think "how tacky".You then see the advert and you realize what a brilliant idea it is.It is as much an advert for her and her music as it is for the product she is supposed to be selling. No one else could get away with that".

The song "4 Minutes" has already entered the UK charts at Number seven on downloads alone. It is expected to enter the Top Five today, even though the video still has not been seen and the record has yet to be released.

Gennaro Castalodo,a spokesman for HMV,said: "Madonna knows it's not just about reaching her own fans, who are going to buy the record anyway."

It was funny then, it's even funnier 8 years later. I couldn't care less. Good for her. Love her!

And it's good to know that this album actually has legs promotion-wise, considering it's her last for WB. She could have just easily submitted it and walked away....

With illegal downloading and declining album sales,it's very hard to make money in the music business these days.Madonna is extremely shrewd. In a way,it almost doesn't matter how many copies this CD sells. She's already made her millions from it lol

This is something I pointed out on the the Janet Jackson thread: artists have to be creative in how they promote/market their work. They have to think outside the box.Gone are the days when artists can sit back and depend on the record company to get them a hit record.Madonna is making sure that her album gets the maximum exposure.By the time April 29 rolls around, the entire globe will know that she has a new CD available.

of course, some will see it as "selling out" but hey, this is a business, remember wink

Madonna's new commercial for SunSilk. This one uses "4 Minutes" (with vocals) as the background music. This commerical is more about Madonna than it is about the shampoo she's supposed to be selling, lol. She's one clever lady!

There's another Sunsilk commercial that uses an instrumental version of "4 Minutes".

hmmm I thought "Give It To Me" was supposed to be the second single? Based on the brief clip I heard,"Miles Away" is an excellent song....a surefire hit,but I think they should go with a faster, uptempo track for the second single. Then slow things down a bit for single number three.

That woman is a photographer's dream. Is there anyone over the last 25 years (or ever) who's been the subject of so many awesome/classic celebrity photoshoots?

Awesome photographs, especially that first shot. Guess I'll have to buy this issue.
