More from Billboard on Madonna's latest hit...

We are seven months away from the 25th anniversary of Madonna's debut on the Hot 100.Her chart life began the week of October 29,1983 with "Holiday".This week, she scores the 53rd entry of her career with "4 Minutes",only her second single to share billing with another artist.Madonna's first shared credit was "Me Against The Music",the 2003 single that was billed as Britney Spears featuring Madonna."4 Minutes" is credited to Madonna featuring Justin Timberlake.

"4 Minutes" enters at No.68 and is Madonna's first chart entry in two years. She was last on the Top 100 with "Sorry",a single that peaked at Number 58 in March 2006.

Madonna was always loved here in Canada and I hear her music all the time at stores, especially stuff from confessions still. I heard The Beat Goes On a few weeks ago too at a store, and Jimmy Jimmy at another store a few months ago. So it's no surprise she's doing fab here, she's still a huge artist here, which is why I find it so hard to believe that she's not really huge in the US like before.

Apparently,Madonna has alot of love for Canada too.Her new "4 Minutes" video will have its world premiere on Canada's MuchMusic "Much On Demand Show" on April 7 from 5:00 PM-6:00 PM.

From what I can make out - most people dont like the song because a) its got Justin all over or/and b) the genre isnt really their thing.
I definitely agree that having Justin all over the song really makes it feel less of a Madonna song. I never think she fares well on duets, and while I love this song - i still feel M should have sung more of the chorus. The genre is typical Timbaland territory. if u like his stuff you should like this really. Its a solid song within its field - and I actually think the chorus is really catchy.

I agree,"4 Minutes" is typical Timbaland, but I really think that's what Madonna wanted. This time around,I think she simply wanted to make an album that's in sync with the popular sounds in America. She's not breaking any new ground and this album won't change the world, but we can't expect her to do that everytime.

In terms of lead singles - it possibly isnt one of her best, but American Life still holds the mantle of worst, not because its awful, but its soo radio unfriendly i cant believe it was ever decided as a good choice. Hung up is an equally slight song in its structure, but as a dance song is brilliant in its construction as a radio friendly peice of dance pop - i feel this is similar.

In my opinion, these days, the lead singles from new Madonna albums are hardly the best songs on the album. This is a trend that started with 'American Life'.I bet that "4 Minutes" is far from the best thing on the new album, but I can see why it was picked as the first single. It's the most commercial thing she's released in years. It features production by the hottest producer right now (Timbaland) and it's a duet with the hottest male singer right now (Justin Timberlake). There is no way that radio would ignore a song like this.It has all the ingredients to be a Top 10 smash.I'm not in love with it,but it's gonna serve its purpose.Already,it's getting more airplay and attention than any of the four 'Confessions' singles.

My main problem with this is its boring structure. I love the pace of it, and the beat, but there's no build or climax to the song. verse, bridge chorus x 2 then its over. One thing i loved about Stuart Price's production was the way he built each song up to a climax as good dance (and Madonna) music should. This just kind of happens - gets you grooving but its over before you're really into it. An extended version would be highly welcome, but im relying on the remixes to offer something more.

I agree.

Im sure the album will offer loads of variety and thats what im loking for. We know the thing most people love about M is that she doesnt repeat herself, and time and again people hear her new stuff and proclaim how its not as good as her older stuff. That is of course always subjective, but as long as she doesnt stand still im happy.

Exactly, and this is why I always get excited about new Madonna albums. She's always trying something new.It would have been really easy for her to simply build on a successful formula and repeat herself. She could have just went back into the studio with Stuart Price, write 12 new electro/pop/dance songs, and created another 'Confessions On A Dancefloor'.Instead, she went in an entirely new direction.I applaud that. Some people will say it's not as good as her older material, but what's the point of being an artist if you're just gonna repeat yourself and do the same thing over and over?

btw, I really don't like this "4 Minutes" song. I've really tried to. I listened to it on repeat for a half an hour 3 days in a row, and I just can't get into it.

The lyrics are horrible (as are those on the other 2 songs I've heard). I can't even tell what this song is supposed to be about, aside from showing off her new friends and them saying Madonna-Madonna over and over. It's like a big starfucking cirle jerk, but don't ask me what the lyrics are actually ABOUT. They're so cliched and non-sequitir that they have absolutely no meaning. And why is she always saying "Yeah" in her songs lately? It's the new "say goodbye" or "walking out the door" or "mmmmm-mmmmm"

And please, Madonna producers, PLEASE go back to processing her vocals. It was nice the first time ("I Deserve It"), but the novelty has worn off. Everything sounds pinched and nasally lately.

Strangely enough, I'm still looking forward to the album, though I hate all 3 songs I've heard from it so far. And they all suffer from exactly the same problems: lyrics, vocals, producer intrusion, etc.

And that snipped of "Miles Away" with people talking over it doesn't sound any more promising to me than the rest of it. confused

If I end up liking Janet's 2008 album (which I do - I love it, actually) more than Madonna's, I'm probably going to have to shoot myself. neutral

I agree with about all that.
Janet's new one is better than 20 YO, but still not all that. Does the bitch know anything anymore about anything other than getting herself off? And more stupid segues (though not quite as bad as the ones on Damita Jo). BUT like you, I'm getting the feeling this Madonna one maybe even worse.

I think he meant frozen face that looks nothing like it used to. Regarding the cover, Michael K. of D-listed got it right: "She's scaring the fuck out of me with that demon face."

She hasn't been looking like herself to me since the RRHOF induction ceremony.
[Edited 3/27/08 17:01pm]

I love D-listed! It's my oxygen...

By 'Cher route' I was implying, yes, the frozen face AND the 50 year old in a skimpy ass corset thing.

I don't think Madonna has looked like 'herself' ever since after the RIT - that's when I think she got all her work done, when she was editing hours and hours of footage of herself for that god awful documentary and saw how she really was looking - it finally sunk in.

D-Listed is the shit. That guy cracks me up on a daily basis - funny as fuck.

I agree she had her first batch of surgery after The Reinvention tour, probably making the documentary did spark it for her although I actually thought she looked really nice in that. I think she always looks much better without make up. She looks a bit tranny-ish when overly made up. I think this recent batch of surgery is awful though. Sure the frikkin make-up and scare hair dont help matters, but those cheeks need to go down now. I also think her eyes look different now - which is such a shame as for me, Madonnas look and attitude was all about the eyes. Shes had some kind of eye lift which has taken a bit of the character out of them.

I dont think shell go in a Cher direction as you have to rememeber Chers surgery came from a disliking of her own features - and occuerd at a younger age. Madonnas is simply trying to hold back the years. I truly hope she feels this latest surgery is a bit too much and decides not to do more.

By the way - im not one of these people who think she should stop wearing skimpy corsets. Shes still has an amazing (surgery free) body that the bitch works hard for - she should fucking flaunt it. Aint nothing feircer than M in some hot pants, a corset and thigh high boots - it should be her staple live costume.

I love that the british accent is now gone...it's like "IM AMERICAN!!!!" And I love how the interviewer says "the last couple CDs did better in the rest of the world than America...why is that?" "Well because I worked with an English producer." Nice Save Madonna. No one has the balls to tell her "Nah bitch, it's just that you have MJ syndnrome - you're a much bigger star overseas than in the US. They're less ageist and aren't as oversaturated with the hot new young things over there!"

Do u need a hug or something? lol

I'm kind of confused with the intention of your post. Is it really a bad thing to not be a big star in the US when so many now are just maufactured or reality show contestants? I'm sure that the producers she chose for this album indicate her desire to try and get on the charts again in the US but being on the top of US charts certainly deos not automatically mean it's a good album. There's a lot of crap on the top of the charts these days and I couldn't care less where her album lands on it as long as the music is good. For her to say that the reason was in part working with an english producer is a truth-- she was making a euro dance inspired album and stuart was known for that (he certainly wasn't known as a hot american hit maker), I don't think it was so off base for her to point that out. shrug

Besides, it's not like I came in here and said something pointless like, "Madonna is a whore!!"

I just think this song is awful. It's another stale, insipid, uninspired dance track with the obligatory popular guest artist.

We know Madonna is capable of something more provocative or insightful than this. Is it too much to expect a little more maturity (in the form of more substantial subject matter) in songs from a middle aged woman?

[Edited 3/26/08 6:54am]

Could not agree more - this song is just like most of the disposable crap on the radio nowadays and this whole Timbaland Timberlake just screams desperate to have a hit - pathetic!

Yes - I always need a hug.

I just thought it was funny that she just totally disregarded the plain fact that her international audience is who's responsible for 75% of her income from record sales, that they are the ones who can help her claim she sells 8 -10 million of each album, that she tried to position it as it's just a matter of which producers she uses and not that she still has more loyal fans and is a bigger star in other countries. It's just a plain, simple fact and it's so like her to just brush that off and say it's because she worked with an English producer - on the one hand, I think she's quick and smart to answer like that, on the other, it's like come on, just admit (like Tina Turner has for 15 years now) that you're bigger in Europe.

She has always used producers...

These producers had to get away from the Prince sound tracks...So, it is not what you'd expect from them..
