Brexit was a UK choice.

But it is an EU problem that they try to milk...

the more i think about the cost of the deluxe edition in comparison to the SDE's... it it kind of insanely egregious and over the top. i mean i never bought into giving the estate hundreds of dollars for whatever cause i really don't use physical CD's and don't care about having plastic shit to put on a shelf somewhere, but the difference in price between the single disc W2A and the mega whatever version is astoundingly ballsy. that's the type of shit really greedy estates pull, whereas before (though the sets/releases themselves were lacking) the pricing wasn't too terribly bad, especially if you waited a bit for a deal. it's especially insulting to me that the deluxe edition here doesn't even come with ANY new music, as others have mentioned, but instead a live show that I'm not really sold on yet and some trinket dollar store bargain bin tier novelty items. we all know there are likely dozens of other songs from this period, they could've slapped a few on that dumb etching side as @vaultcurator previously mentioned, or even throw in a bonus CD with the deluxe edition with 10 or so extra cuts. what else are they gonna use them on? 20ten super deluxe? give me a break

tis' a bitch.

Exactly! the Troubadour shows, this is what i'm look for. Deluxe editions should contains aftershows from the period. They should have include the Paris New Morning 87 in the SOTT deluxe for example.

I mean, the W2A tour was great. And as far as I'm aware, there's not many if any soundboards of it out. The audio should be spectacular.

There's great soundboards from the W2A tour (the Forum, Inglewood for example)

I never thought it would happen to me, but I think this release is what’s gonna divorce me from physical media entirely.

If they’d just offered a cd+blu-ray set, I’d have happily handed over my money. But forcing me to pay a premium for a bunch of stuff I don’t want and can’t use… just no. I then believed I’d just buy the cd, but honestly, why do that when I know that I’m just gonna stream the thing, and the cd will sit on the shelf with my 1999 and SOTT sets?

So, well done, Estate. Instead of selling me something, you’ll sell me nothing.

Agreed.

I think they're just trying to soak the die hards, figuring that's about all they have left -- and they may be right. Anyone splurging for the expensive package on this one is certainly hardcore and likely posts here.

However, the publicity W2A is getting actually surprises me and is something I didn't expect at all so wtf do I know? I guess it's because it's the first "new" album -- along with the 5 year anniversary of his death -- but, to me, all that vault stuff was from 1999 and SotT was like getting new 5 records and I'll wager those are better than whatever this turns out to be.

Still semi hyped for it but damned if I'm gonna get soaked to the tune of $100.

Appropos of nothing, Prince looks ridiculous in that furry boot getup. Always hated that photo shoot.

Just ordered the CD. Can comfortably afford the deluxe but have no use for the vinyl and zero interest in the rest of the stuff they are selling with it, so it would be a waste of money. The estate could have got more money from me with a CD/Blu-Ray release.

My first Prince shows were the last 3 at the Forum. I was 17 and my mom flew us out from Detroit to see him as I had a feeling it would be his last big go around in the states.
.
Apart from my sentiment around this era, I'm not as juiced for this as I originally thought. I'm definitely not going to be as over critical of the music as maybe I would have in 2011. My main issue is with the choice of concert oddly enough. It's amazing that we have a proper blu-ray concert, but of all the shows from this tour, why the one with so many covers? The MSG shows were impeccable and I'm sad we won't watch him do the Musicology-Prince & The Band bit, that shit was electric!

a better idea for the future is: less packaging, more music.

i would have loved to be able to pay the estate for a deluxe version of this that contained:

1 - the album
2 - the live show
3 - a disc of 'era specific vault material'
4 - the troubadour show.

could have come with a 2 page pamphlet, not even having the lyrics for all i care. but i would gladly have spent 40-50 bucks on that.

now all i'm going to buy is the cd. which is fine, but it could have been better.

and one more thing: if you sell people a blu ray or a dvd, how hard can it be in this day and age to just provide people with a download code for the audio of that performance? people are going to rip it anyway so why not provide a simple service and perhaps another stimulus for some to buy.

I'm still really surprised they didn't choose an Oakland shows given it was his last time performing with Sheila. I'm partial cuz I saw the shows but they also were just wonderful from start to finish. He switched it up for the 21NS shows. Oh well.

This package is, like the others so far, not quite on the mark and it really only begs the question - why? I can't imagine them releasing a 2010-2011 era outtake set lol. They could've put a disc or two of vault stuff here. I wonder why they didn't take it all the way?

I was going to either order the CD/Blu Ray edition from japan or ask a girl I know who lives there to send it over for me but in the end I just said "fuck it" and ordered the regular CD from Amazon UK, which because of some sort of tax fuckery comes to only 9.99 english pounds despite it being listed at 11.99 on the site. Now, I have to pay an additional 4 pound delivery fee to have it sent to Ireland but overall, that's still only 14 pound, which is reasonable for a new album. I would have gone as high as €30 for the CD/Blu Ray but that's the limit. Where they get off charging nearly 100 quid for a 12 track album and a bog standard concert on Blu Ray is beyond me.

I guess they feel like if they put out a stand alone live set it needs to have a ton of hits on it to be commerciially viable. Thing is, we already HAVE that a few times over.

I don't envy the estate and the people in charge having to sift through what must be an incredible amount of material and decide what should be what and when. I'm sure it's duanting and there's no fucking way to satisfy everyone. Certainly, money/profit is a factor and there's absolutely no way around that.

Me personally? I want soundboard/video of aftershows, new vault tracks and live sets with rarely performed songs but I'm not in charge and can only wish. I'm happy overall with we've gotten so far even if this new one doesn't grind my gears so much.

Hard to believe it's been half a decade though. God damn.

Because none of us are going to make money with any of this.

I think eventually they're going to be left with no choice but to give us die hards what we want once the more commercially succesful shit is milked for every dime they can squeeze out of it. We'll be the only ones buying this stuff and the last remaining market.

Until then, we'll get the stuff that sold the most and is the most popular. After D&P, I'm not sure how much they can squeeze out of Prince the Top 40 Legend. No one's clamouring for a Batman SDE.

The weirdest thing to me is why leave an entire side of an album blank if you're bothering to press two records when we all know there's a ton of tracks they could easily fill it with. They could throw just about anything on Side 4 and cobble something together.

Lord knows there's a mountain of stuff to choose from.

Yeah, exactly. The material is there. Is the concern that the outtakes would detract from the artistic statement of the album itself? Hate to break it to them, but I don't think this album is going to move the needle for nonfans (it wasn't his most exciting period), and the folks who would drop 60 extra bucks on laminated shit Tyka printed out on her iMac are the ones who also want more music and fuck the etching.

The deluxe edition deserved some outtakes from the album sessions or general time period. At the very least, some alternate or extended versions.

The concert is an odd choice in terms of the setlist and most hardcore fans want more unheard music, rather than reprinted aesthetic items.

The Estate really would benefit from consulting genuine fans who actually pay for the products, particularly the deluxe packages.

the sad truth of it is that for every 100 really knowledgeable and level-headed hardcore fans who are here for the talent and music, there's 1,000 more ditzy and casual fans that might see some stupid plastic ticket stub in this overpriced set and think "OMG I NEED IT" or just pay whatever for whatever because "i love prince so much!!!"

at the end of the day catering to those people will always leave the music in the dust, when it should be at the forefront. people like that are here for the iconography and prince branding, and it seems sometimes that the estate is far more concerned about mystique and brand building instead of properly undertaking an archival release in the way the music really deserves.

As streaming continues to grow and becomes the dominant way huamns listen to music these special edition box sets are going to be a specialty item. Get used to it. Physical product will increasingly become a limited collector's item. It's going to cost a good amount like any product that's rare. Keep in mind these sets will have value. Your MP3 collection has no value.
