Thoughts? Diamonds & Pearls likely to be the next deluxe according to Dr. F..

...listeninng to one of the ever brilliant Dr. F docs last week & sadly or not it looks like D&P might be the next deluxe as opposed to Parade due to contracts/legals etc.

Purley speculation of course...gutted if true. So, if that's the case I am guessing this still could be potentially great? Gig footage will of course be stellar, hopefully a tonne of rehearsal footage of which we have now seen several clips, pics from that era are stellar! etc. What will be interesting will be the vault tracks... besides the obvious potential horror of MORE TONY M! this may be a really interesting set as he was in a very searching for a new sound phase at that point.

What are your thoughts ? -parade would have been off the scale but would we be happy with a D&P deluxe instead? I am happy that the deluxe project is still, hopefully! continuing so it will be a welcome addition.

I knew it all along
They dont want to get stuck in the 80s
Look forward to early versions of the songs and schoolyard and seeing what else prince had in the can
I think 90s album would look more uunpredictable compated to parade etc
New vault tracks could prompt a reappraisal too

Personally, I'm pleased at this news. Diamonds and Pearls was the album I first became a fan with when I was 14, so I have a nostalgia for it, and it will shift the current myopic focus on the 80s which is only damaging to Prince's legacy in the long-term.

The album was a best-seller, introduced Prince to an entirely new generation of fans and the recent D&P bootleg showcasing earlier versions of some of the material is more than enough to hint at the treasures in store. Who doesn't want that version of 'Insaitable' with those vocals in pristine quality.

In addition, it may include songs such as 'Open Book','Get Blue' and others, since I'm guessing they'll include sessions from 1990.

I mean. Its not my favorite album or anything and I dont Co sider it a classic but I would buy it lol 😂. If Player, Schoolyard and the early version of Live 4 Love is on it then yes for sure lol. I dont have a soundboard of the concert either...just a rehearsal. Probably will come with 2 discs of the remixes. There were a lot of them for that era Gett Off maxi singles and Cream maxi especially were albums themselves...if they included those.

The Diamonds & Pearls beginnings thing is an interesting listen so this would be too. It's a bloated, commercial mess of an album but it has some very high highs and, if nothing else, there must be some good stories of him putting together a purposely commercial album. It hasn't had much of an afterlife in the "classic album" canon but it could do with some reevaluation for sure, I'll take it shrug

be good if they include the original gett off promo mix.

i dont care about the maxi single mixes.

i just hope they include stuff that makes people rethink this era.

It would be a total failure if it didn't include that.

Then again, I think the super deluxe editions we have had so far would have been failures if they didn't include all the 7" edits that I pretty much never listen to, and i'm fairly in a minority on that one.

I sure would love to have the original damn near 10 minutes mix of Gett Off as a stand-alone included on vinyl!

There's also a lot of uncovered ground regarding the early live shows of the NPG, open rehearsals at the Glam Slam Club and in Paisley Park, e. g.

http://www.princevault.co...nuary_1991

http://www.princevault.co...nuary_1992

and of course the Warner Bros. Showcase:

http://www.princevault.co...une_1991-m

I would also love to hear this one-off show for MTV:

http://www.princevault.co...ugust_1991

as it is for a TV station there must be a video of it somewhere???

Of course, the Rock in Rio shows in great quality would also be a great addition.

I also would love to see more like the video version of Willing and Able with The Steeles - one of my all time favourites.

If this set ever comes to fruition: Please make it more more complete then the SOTT set.

Unfortunately, we've already heard many vault tracks from the era including the alternate versions from D&P. I'm afraid there's not so many outakes we don't know yet from 90-91.

That said, i'll take it and hope they'll include in the SDE Box an Originals Cd from this era (Open book, Get blue, Allegiance, The Voice were all given to associated artists). Adding Originals volumes to the further SDE boxes seem to be the only way we can hear a decent amount of associated tracks IMO.

Apart from the tracks we already know ("Schoolyard", "Player", "I Wonder" etc), "Waiting 4 Your Love", "Small Bright Light" "Stroke" & "Last Dance" come to mind in terms of Vault tracks. Not that much really.

I wonder what kind of contractual obligations could prevent the Estate from realeasing a Parade SDE Box though...It seemed to be the obvious choice.

This isn't the first time I've heard this rumour, and if it's true I think it's a misstep on the estate's part. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying 'Diamonds and Pearls' isn't worthy of the super deluxe treatment. I just think there are several albums which should be a higher priority.

'Diamonds and Pearls' isn't in urgent need of remastering. The album really doesn't sound bad. It was recorded with a CD release in mind and was mastered as such. Everything from For You through to Lovesexy would benefit far greater from a proper digital remastering. Maybe even Batman and Graffiti Bridge.

As much as I like to buy all of Prince's major releases I'm in no hurry to pick up D&P:SD.

This move makes the most commercial sense, obviously, and is what I'd expected. After Batman and ATWIAD, it's next up on the list of his biggest sellers and I doubt a huge audience is clamoring for either of those two. ATWIAD would be for the die hards and Batman is kind of an anomoly.

D&P is not one of my favorites but there's some good stuff to be mined from it I think.

it was the last album that was a hit for him.

so natural to release it this way.

i look forward to it.

the estate would want to show that princes good music did not simply end in 1989.

ive not heard many outtakes from this era tbh, so am interested to hear them, but i hope they arent dissapointing.

it would be nice to get unreleased songs from this era to show that not only was he still productive but still creating good stuff.

it is a very commercial album though so im going to assume that unless its a great hit, it prob isnt that special. whereas outtakes from earlier eras at least had lots of interesting stuff.

I'd be of the opinion that Parade is one of the best mastered CDs around. Happy to hear what someone does on a remaster, it's not going to destroy my copy, but I'd be very surprised if they could improve upon it.

If we're talking decades, it wouldn't be my first choice from the '90s. But probably like most here, I've got some personal favorites among associated tracks that would have a chance for wider hearing.

e.g., Open Book heart
I Wonder heart

Adding my vote to hope for Originals section.

If this turns out to be true, I'd be happy with that. D&P was a big album for Prince and I wonder if (as said above) that the Estate didn't want to get stuck in the 80s. Parade would have been cool too but this is fine. Other than Batman, isn't D&P one of the top 5 of Prince's best sellers? Makes sense to me if they wanted to mix things up a bit. Even after SOTT SDE, the only other era to reissue in my mind and to get away from the mid-80s would have been one of the first 3 albums.

For me, this was the era where I was fully on the Prince train anyway. I already was with Lovesexy/Batman/Grafitti Bridge but this is where I was flying my Prince freak flag. I'm looking forward to the reissue if it is true.

been pondering on it since posting & have come around to the idea if it's true. Think about it, we've had the 80's really well covered thus far so a step forwards into one of his most successful post 80's ventures will freshen things up a bit. Also...imagine what gems exist in the vault from that era...would imagine some heavy soul funk with Rosies vocals ? & some great NPG horns.

I disagree, literally every nerd with a YouTube channel, blog or podcast that was of-age during Batman '89 speaks of that project with unabashed awe and consistently defend the quality of that record with the air that your average org'er reserves for an SOTT, 1999 or Parade. Even famous nerds like Howard Stern or Kevin Smith have devoted considerable energy/content for their respective shows on how great they believe that project to be.

.

Wheras DnP, a "biggest seller", sure, but who ever really speaks of it past 1992 other than to bash his integration of rap? Out of all his big records this feels most endemic to the year it was released... it has next to zero legacy behind it contemporarily.

NOOOOOOOOO! First album I wasn't crazy about. Jughead was enough then and I don't need to hear it again. If the Estate is listening anything from the first album up through Graffti Bridge would be prefereable.

One of my least favorites. I cringe through most of it, for all the reasons listed above. Maybe a deluxe can cast new light on it. Maybe some songs exist in less awful versions. A good candidate for rediscovery. I'd much prefer to love it.

Say what you want about theaalbum as a whole but it hasasome of his greatest 90s songs
It has arguably more top notch material than any other 90s album

Get off
Daddy pop
Cream
D and p
Insatiable
Money dont matter

How can you argue with that?

yeah it was ruled by his commercial instincts but he really put a lot of work into these songs
And it paid off

Huh. This is surprising. But then, as a couple of people mentioned above, a D&P SDE would dip a toe into Prince's 90s output. D&P was his most successful 90s album, so it would make sense to make that a priority. (Gold Experience is my favorite of his 90s output, but I'm almost positive that'll never get an SDE. All the politics involved at the time and everything.)

.

I'll buy any Prince SDE, really. In the case of D&P, I'm looking forward to the Vault material more than the remastered album. The completist obsessed Prince collector wants as much stuff as I can get my hands on.

I'm all for the Estate moving beyond the 80's, but I don't feel like D&P is the album to achieve that. We can debate about other decades, but I think there is a general consensus that Gold is his best album of the 90's. They should start there. I get it that there may be some contractual issues, but do they want to make money or not?

No one but core fans care about gold very much

it was just the nature of releasing music once CDs became the main format but I think if d and p was edited it would have been harder to fault.

I'd have made it -

Gett off
Diamonds and pearls
Cream
Strolling
Willing and able (no rap)

Daddy pop (no rap)
Walk dont walk
Money dont matter tonight
Insatiable
Live 4 love (no rap)

RODSERLING

D&P was succesfull ok. But considering the promo and the hits that was on it, not so successful in fact.
It s also a very bad catalogue seller. I think in the USA since 1993, it sold like 100.000 copies, maybe less
.
In the UK, it was certified 900.000 copies in 2001, but never reached the million mark, in almost 20 years!
Even when Prince died, D&P ranked very low in the album charts worldwide.
.
I thought WB was to be stuck with movie soundtrack by 2021?
Did they get an extra year ( because of the covid, for instance) ?.
.
If WB got an extra-year, then that could explain why they gave up, 3 years in a row, the, Parade SDE.
.
Maybe that's a way to release, at last! A show in a blu ray format.
.
But, as always, I Will believe in that release when I see it.
