I actually really like that album. And I have a lot of bootleg songs, but not a lot of them from this era. So there would be a ton of unreleased shit that would be completely new to me. Plus the live material? I say bring it.

I wouldn't take Funkenberry's word as gospel. Before SOTT was confirmed I remember him saying the estate wouldn't release it until they had the rights to the SOTT concert film which proved to be untrue.

[Edited 12/21/20 11:58am]

Howe confirmed the estate genuinely tried/really wanted SOTT film in the set, so likely the intel was correct at that moment.

Honestly glad they lost out on that one because I much prefer something new like what we got.

EDIT

Also, D&P is a perfectly fine album. Just a little safe and contrived. I liked the more daring approach he used to take and this was marking the period where he really seemed to be more of a follower than a pioneer. There's plenty of good songs on it though and almost all of the material came off really well live with the new NPG and on TV. To me, there's not a real clunker on it besides "Strollin" but nothing as great as "Annastesia" or "Joy in Repetition" either.

Jughead and Push catch a lot of shit but, musically, they're fine and quite funky - just ruined by the vocals and rap. If they were instrumental, people would like them more I think. Prince does a pretty good job here mixing up styles, switching gears, trying some new shit and Insatiable is one of his better ballad entries. "Willing and Able" doesn't really sound like anything I'd heard him try before, even if it doesn't entirely succeed.

I'm not nuts about the record and rarely play it but that's mainly because there's not a ton of real depth to it like 1999, Parade or SoTT. From a commercial standpoint, D&P Deluxe makes perfect sense for the estate to release next though if they're stsill trying to mine the hits. And why wouldn't they?

Past this one though, I hope they give up the SDE approach and really dig into the vault, the live stuff and especially the aftershows. I think they know they're looking at far fewer sales that way. A "Best of the Vault/Prince LIVE/Members Only Aftershow" collection for the hardcore fans is about the only thing I can think of moving forward that would get me to tap my credit card again and I think the "mainstream hits related" posthumeous Prince stuff is about tapped out.

Have to admit it would be a massive disappointment if D&P were to be the next one. Infact I don't think I would even purchase it. D&P for me represents Prince dumbing down, and turning deliberately more commerical in order to win back the mainstream. I can see why some like it, and I wouldn't call it a bad album, just wasn't for me.

I was hoping for Parade, Dirty Mind or ATWIAD...

Fill the holes in what we have (i.e. Parade, ATWIAD), then work outward from there. Wasn't 'Kiss' P's first non-PR #1? I don't know a mainstreamer who could even name you a tune on D&P...

They might know Cream and/or Gett Off, but they wouldn't know which album they came from. 'Round here, anyway.

I have friends and met people that don't give especially a shit about Prince, but they love D&P or Batman, just as any commercial album from any commercial artist.
Especially in France, these albums and singles are best known than those of Purple Rain or 1999.

All righty then. I'll take your word for it.

But D&P was one of Prince's most successful commercial endeavors, marked a "comeback" of sorts at the time and I feel safe saying that it was pretty mainstream in 1991. He was all over the TV (Arsenio Hall, The MTV Music Awards, Rock In Rio, The Special Olympics) and the songs from this record were pretty ubiquitous during that time. The splash he made baring his ass on MTV alone was a fucking tidal wave in terms of publicity.

D&P is right up there just behind 1999, PR and Batman as an album that everyone associates with him. I think more casual fans know about this one even over SoTT. It reached #3 on the charts and had 2 top 5 hits (Cream and the title track) plus it had 5 top 20 hits on the R&B charts.

People know this record.

If you don't mind me asking, how old are you?

Yes, in the early '90s the general public was very aware of Diamonds & Pearls. But they seem to have forgotten it. In 2020, if you ask the general publis to start listing Prince songs nearly all of them will be from 1999 or Purple Rain, with perhaps the addition of Raspberry Beret, Kiss and Batdance. Diamonds & Pearls just doesn't pop into Joe Public's mind.

Perhaps you can jog their memories by saying, "What about Diamonds & Pearls or Cream" and they may say, "Oh yeah, I forgot about those." But the point is, they aren't on the tip of anyone's tongues.

There are other non-D&P songs I could say the same thing about. Back in '87 everyone knew U Got the Look, but today that's not one that jumps into the mind of the general public. Like D&P, you might be able to job people's memories and it will come back to them. Another one: Partyman. In '89 everyone knew it. It was a major follow-up hit to Batdance. But most people seem to have forgotten it today.

Point being, just because a song/ablum was popular at one particular point in time, that doesn't mean it stuck it the consciousness of the general public.

Of course, but common', everybody knows Cream.

In France, it has always been one of the 3 Prince songs that were the most broadcast on radio/tv.
.
When Prince died, here were the ten best selling download of Prince in the French top singles ( of course TMBGITW wasn't available) :
.
#1 Purple Rain
#2 Kiss
#8 Cream
#11 When Doves Cry
#14 Sometimes it Snows in April

#15 SOTT
#25 I wanna be Your Lover
#27 Girls and Boys
#32 1999
#33 Diamonds and Pearls

.
So, no Raspberry Beret (#36), no Batdance (#39), but Cream in the top 3 Prince songs and D&P in the top 10.
Also charting that week from D&P :
.
#38 Money Don't Matter 2night
#97 Gett Off
.

Another lazy critique. Literally everybody started incorporating rap/hip-hop into their music because we see/saw how big it was getting. Michael Jackson was even doing it. It was inevitable regardless of you liking it or not

D&P is a great collection of overall very good songs, and enough eclectic to retain Prince fans'attention : funk, pop, classic and new rnb, jazz, rock... Surely it was even too eclectic for the mainstream audience. Or else, with 7 singles, it would have sold more than 7 millions worldwide.
.
But we already know this album. What matters is the unreleased material.
There will be great things, and clunkers as usual.
And 3 cds of remixes eek

I think this would be a mistake the more I think about it. It's not an album that has aged well other than the hits. It has some real garbage on it like "Push", "Jughead", "Walk Don't Walk" and "Live 4 Love" and none of the leaked outtakes are any good. This will not sell. I'm a huge fan but I have no interest in this. They should stick with classic Prince 1979-1989 before they get to this.

So this discussion tells me one thing.

New younger Prince fans who missed out on the golden ages of Princes career the 80s, they're looking forward to it.

Original Prince fans who lived through the 80s when he could do no wrong from Dirty Mind - Sign O'the times think it's a bad move and prefers Dirty Mind or Parade.

I happen to agree with the original fans. But Purple Rain, Batdance, Diamond and Pearls and Musicology were his high profile moments of his career.

But I feel sorry for 90s Prince fans. They have no idea what they missed out on when Prince was kicking ass throughout the 80s.

This will sell more or less what SOTT and 1999 deluxe sold.
These kind of releases at 150 bucks are not supposed to attract millions of people.
Especially if the estate/WB doesn't make at least cheap milusic videos as they did for Originals.
.
Maybe a simpler and cheaper boxset,( let s say Dirty Mind) could sell more.
CD1 : the album
CD2 : the outtakes
CD3 : a dvd live

Sell it at 50 bucks with a 100 pages booklet, and that will be more affordable for the fams who couldn't afford SOTT deluxe.

This theory is garbage. I'm not a new or young fan and this release is gonna be awesome.

You folks got your time to shine in your 80s bunker with hundreds of new tracks. Time to prove Prince wasn't on the dole by 1990.
