I can't speak for others but I sure do, saw him live in the late 80s but his best work will always be the 80s, especially from 80-87, better live performer then too and wasn't a trend chaser.

Throughout the 90s? He became a joke.

I recently listened to a diamonds and pearls concert and it isnt that great tbh. Some good renditions ofc, and its def enjoyable (my first prince show was this tour!), but as a whole, it's pretty conventional compared to the sound of his 80s tours.

I can see WB back burner-ing Parade again to squeak this one out before the Sony sale, but why D&P? They could give us an ATWIAD SDE (Raspberry Beret was huge!), and with their eventual Parade SDE they will have covered '82-'87!

To be fair, live concerts sounds flat if the sound and the picture are not top-notch.
I d like to think they go with D&P because the quality of the picture cAn be easily transfered to HD.
.
Because frankly, what they already released in dvd concerts is disgusting in term of picture, even the SOTT live. It distract from enjoying it.
The CDs live sounds very good though, and I enjoy them more.
Even the music videos they put on the dvd are more disgusting than what is on YouTube.
How can it be possible?
.
It s time to go HD, for once.

There’s a lot more Prince music in the 90’s without rap than music that has it so again. Lazy critique. Not only was everybody incorporating hip hop into their sound Prince music no matter how “trend chasing” you claim never sounded like the radio. It always sounded like Prince. Experimental don’t always mean good. It’s plenty of clunkers in the 80’s. You clearly just prefer pop/rock music apparently. When he went back to r&b and funk primarily and got a black band folks were up in arms. I also notice it’s just on this website this nonsense keeps coming up.

The bottom line is this: D&P was a huge hit and it put Prince back on the pop music map - he didn't exactly fall off the map anyway. But he also was still playing stadiums and arenas on that D&P tour. Why on Earth wouldn't the Estate and WB not do a SDE of it? Whether you like that album or not is irrelevant. Personally, I'm not a fan of the 1st album For You but I have it. Would I buy it if it had a SDE reissue? Not right away but yes I would one day.

Exactly. All of this

Fortunately, Prince was not one-dimensional unlike 90% of the major artists on the charts. He did a lot of things and for that we love him and his work but if he decided he wanted to go one direction, we all had an opoinion. For those of us who wanted the 80s freaky friday heyday, put yourself on the reverse. With D&P and Love Symbol, he went a little mainstream and those fans who "sorta" liked him, decided to buy those albums.

We all wanted him to be everything all the time and for that we need to cut him some slack. Other than a very select few artists, no one had a run like he did or a career like he did and I think we need to appreciate that.

Plus, he's not here to put new music out and the Estate has to make money somehow to pay for Paisley Park and whatever else.

Having said that, roll on D&P SDE.

That's hardly the bottom line. That's evidence that the album was successful in 1991 as a new pop album, not evidence that it would sell well as a legacy album to all the old dinosaurs who buy legacy boxsets.

I don't think ANY boxset sells well in the numbers that a new commercial pop album sells. Very few "new" buyers will get the boxsets anyway. We'll get it but the average person won't.

The other side is also real fans who won't buy it. I LOVE David Bowie but I haven't got any of the Bowie releases that have come out since he passed (and there have been a lot) except for the Legacy compilation and the Blackstar EP. And so yeah, even some serious Prince fans won't get that box set.

How much of it?

Yes I agree, and i'd wager the standard boxset-buying dad is more likely to buy an 80s album boxset before Diamonds and Pearls, and certainly anything Revolution related.

Don't get me wrong, personally i'm happy with either or both, I think D&P would make a great release, but I know many people who have no interest in Prince after the 80s.

Being succesful at the time isn't a particularly strong barometer for a successful reissue (although, unless they find a particulatly amazing hook that gets picked up in the media, obviously a D&P reissue will sell more than a New Power Soul reissue!)

Specious reason for why ppl dont like this era
How to explain why the gold era is so popular with fans? Still a black band
And prince still did plenty pop and rock in the 90s
Plenty on diamonds n pearls in fact.

Not really, for me at least.

He played less 'hits' back then. (also take the PP shows into account that cam before the tour)

He played more of the new stuff, covers, etc.

It was kinda experimental in certain areas.

Mostly hardocre fans knew the songs.

Other people complained he did not play Purple Rain at live shows.

That's why I don't understand the issue. I only find the issue on here. There's more music without Tony M./rap/hip-hop than with it but folks love to go down the "he was following trends" rabbit hole. No he just continued making whatever he wanted. If that meant r&b and funk primarily, so be it. Just say you didn't like it. Doesn't mean it wasn't good. All that quirky and experimental shit wasn't good either.

I always took D&P as great as SOTT, amd also as eclectic, a truly jukebox-album.
.
You have pop ( Thunder, Daddy Pop, Walk Don't Walk),
new rnb( D&P, Insatiable),
rock ( Cream, Live for Love),
jazz ( Strollin'),
folk/country ( Willing and Able),
hard-rock funk hip hop UFO ( Gett Off)
Funk ( I push)
Hip hop ( Jughead)
Old rnb/ soul ( Money don't matter 2Nite)
.

And every genre is always crossed-over with one another. Only aprince could do that.
I don't know what trends he was chasing, because at the time, acts released albums that were one-genre oriented ( a rap album like Public Enemy, a rock album like Nirvana...).
