Not the biggest fan of this album but of course I will still buy it. It makes sense that this is the next one since it was so popular.

I'd rather they do Graffiti Bridge, or Batman even. Diamonds & Pearls isn't worth the price of a SD to me.

Like many on here I would be disappointed if the next SDE was Diamonds & Pearls.

However that's not to say the Estate couldn't / wouldn't make a great job of it. It could be that there's lots of goodies and alternative versions in the vault and they'll make it great.

Sign of the Times was a reasonable job, as was 1999. I'd take that sort of treatment with any of the remaining albums.

If it is D&P I would very much love a proper CD (or better) quality audio of the video version of Willing & Able to be included. I'm not a bootleg follower so I have no extensive knowledge or wishlist of non-released tracks. So if there are plenty that will make a nice surprise.

Despite the disappointment at the next one being D&P I'll still 100% buy it.

At this point in time and space I'll take any 'new' Prince music.

The SDEs I am really hopeful for are Come, The Gold Experience & Around the World in A Day. Then Parade. Add to that the Prince versions of the first two Time albums, the Jill Jones tracks he did and other standout tracks that ended up being released by other artists. I'd happily take an originals 2 as well. I didn't get offended by the Originals album (audio quality aside) - I'm still not completely sure why some on her found it so horrid. I still burst into applause each time I hear Baby You're a Trip.

Roll on 2021 releases.

Yes, Yes, YES to the video (audio) version of Willing & Able!!!!! I think it's one of Prince's best vocal performances ever!

I think Diamonds and Pearl's is as valid as any other album to receive a super deluxe release.

My preference would be Parade first but I'm still going to be super excited for this release if it happens.

I think it's a great album and the Vault tracks could be a real revelation.

D&P wouldn't be my first choice, but it'd be fun. I'd love to have a Super Deluxe for the Gold/Come/Chaos years. Unfortunately, this won't happen until the Most Beautiful Girl dispute is settled.

I think this would be a mistake the more I think about it. It's not an album that has aged well other than the hits. It has some real garbage on it like "Push", "Jughead", "Walk Don't Walk" and "Live 4 Love" and none of the leaked outtakes are any good. This will not sell. I'm a huge fan but I have no interest in this. They should stick with classic Prince 1979-1989 before they get to this.

That's my fear, as well. A lacklustre response to this set could cause them to scale back future releases of the really good stuff.

'Open Book', 'Get Blue' and 'Player' aren't any good? I beg to differ. There was some great material on the Diamonds and Pearls Beginnings bootleg also.

I agree but we already have these songs in decent quality. Meanwhile, we've never heard Call Of The Wild, Evolsidog, God Is Everywhere, Stella & Charles, Fun Love, etc...

So even though D&P is a great Prince era, there's no urge in releasing a SDE now as opposed to Parade IMO.

Someone on here said it best when D&P Beginnings was leaked and they heard Insatiable Original Recording

"He could tear the fucking sea with that falsetto"

That version proved his voice maybe was at his strongest at this time and dare I say in the Pop realm at that time?

I would add Eye Wonder. Truly, Get Blue and Eye Wonder are songs that could radio play today.

essays i hope to see in the D&P release

intro from dave chappele (new regular feature)

daphne brooks on how prince summarised the political moment of 1990/91 with thunder ("the religious mood of america was changing"), live 4 love ("prince prophesised the changing tide of public opinion on the gulf war") and insatiable ("a metaphor for america's voracious appetite for consuming the lives of its poorest, with prince taking the role of the nation and his lover the willing participant-cum-victim")

rakim (of eric b and rakim) explaining how he has long been a big tony m fan

a jeweller from mpls writing on how sales rocketed after the release of d&p

essay from the designer of the ass out pants ("he was so genius... originally the pants only had holes at the bottom for his feet, but just before i had finished the stitching, he came up to me and said, 'and what about my ass?')

daphne brooks on how assless pants represented a statement on princes politics ("with those pants, prince was saying to america, 'accept my ass or own your prejudices towards the black male posterior'")

duane tudahl with a minute by minute studio sheet of how jughead came together from early drafts through to the finished version, after originally being planned as the centrepiece of the album in an 18 minute extended version with each NPG member rapping 2-3 verses each, complete with images of the original jughead tape reels, since recorded over by prince, after he angrily exclaimed that if the longer version was to be released, the world would not recognise its greatness until he was dead and gone, like the graffiti bridge film, and he would rather delete it, then suffer mockery for the rest of his life instead

'Open Book', 'Get Blue' and 'Player' are mediocre at best. 'Open Book' retains a bit of charm, but the other two are a total snoozefest. Probably the most boring, mainstream and auto-pilot mode Prince.

I wouldn't take Funkenberry's word as gospel. Before SOTT was confirmed I remember him saying the estate wouldn't release it until they had the rights to the SOTT concert film which proved to be untrue.

Howe confirmed the estate genuinely tried/really wanted SOTT film in the set, so likely the intel was correct at that moment.
