I'm all for the Estate moving beyond the 80's, but I don't feel like D&P is the album to achieve that. We can debate about other decades, but I think there is a general consensus that Gold is his best album of the 90's. They should start there. I get it that there may be some contractual issues, but do they want to make money or not?
[Edited 12/11/20 7:57am]
They believe they are going for the $ by following "best sellers" logic... problem is that logic really doesn't tell the whole tale.
.
Estate is likely feeling themselves because SOTT SDE sold better than they were expecting even following "best sellers" logic, but again, that project doing well has nothing to do with what sold in 1987 and has everything to do with what SOTT is regarded in the overall oevre of Prince and rock/popular music in general.
.
DnP by contrast, all about 1991 and nothing but the dollars and taste of 1991. .
Like your post alludes, it will do more to sully the uninitiated's view of "90s Prince" if anything... |

I hope this is true!
It makes sense as it was one of his best selling and most publicised albums, as well as being very good, plus it will be the 30th anniversary next year!
Exciting!

D&P was succesfull ok. But considering the promo and the hits that was on it, not so successful in fact. It s also a very bad catalogue seller. I think in the USA since 1993, it sold like 100.000 copies, maybe less . In the UK, it was certified 900.000 copies in 2001, but never reached the million mark, in almost 20 years! Even when Prince died, D&P ranked very low in the album charts worldwide. . I thought WB was to be stuck with movie soundtrack by 2021? Did they get an extra year ( because of the covid, for instance) ?. . If WB got an extra-year, then that could explain why they gave up, 3 years in a row, the, Parade SDE. . Maybe that's a way to release, at last! A show in a blu ray format. . But, as always, I Will believe in that release when I see it.
Thats true... But when you really think of it, no Prince album is really a good catalouge seller besides Purple Rain and TVBOP. Those are the only two that have sold steadily for the last 20 years. 1999 and SOTT due to their recent deluxe reissues, but even though 1999 and Diamonds & Pearls total sales surpass 7 million worldwide now, they were never great catalouge sellers either. Like I said most of Prince's albums were never catalogue sellers besides Purple Rain when you really think of it. |

I would only buy this if it included a full live show on dvd. This was the time where Prince's concerts became more interesting than his albums. (Not that his concerts weren't great before, but in the 80s, both concerts and albums were great.) If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am. |

If this turns out to be true, I'd be happy with that. D&P was a big album for Prince and I wonder if (as said above) that the Estate didn't want to get stuck in the 80s. Parade would have been cool too but this is fine. Other than Batman, isn't D&P one of the top 5 of Prince's best sellers? Makes sense to me if they wanted to mix things up a bit. Even after SOTT SDE, the only other era to reissue in my mind and to get away from the mid-80s would have been one of the first 3 albums.
For me, this was the era where I was fully on the Prince train anyway. I already was with Lovesexy/Batman/Grafitti Bridge but this is where I was flying my Prince freak flag. I'm looking forward to the reissue if it is true.
Yes. This move shouldn't surprise anybody. The estate has run through the Big Three and D&P is RIGHT THERE as the logical next step.

I think Parade is the better album by a mile but it also has the stink of the movie dragging it down and kind of sort of piled on the Prince backlash a little. Real music listeners were still on his jock but the one two punch of what came after Purple Rain thinned his following a bit and the mainstream never entirely quite came around until this album.
D&P was a return to a more commercial sound and had some ready made top 40 hits (Cream and the title track). "Gett Off" might be one of Prince's most blistering and fierce lead singles though looking back on it. It's pretty thick/dense and actually quite a bold choice for such a commercial album.
I recall being absolutely fucking floored when it dropped. |

Be interesting to hear some outtakes we know nothing about yet I think there was at least 1 pictured in the vault but I forgot the title. All those remixes though they will need 27 discs if they include a show, the alternate-early versions of songs a disc of outtakes and ALL-THOSE-DAMN-MIXES.
But..... I think we are due some 90's glam. Why not!
It would excite me more if they did not keep on passing over PARADE SDE.

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but since Universal now owns the rights to all the non-soundtrack albums, is the idea that the creators of the super deluxe are now going to work on projects for Universal and not WB? Wouldn't WB still want to get more Super Deluxes out there, or do super deluxes for Batman, Graffiti Bridge etc. now face the addtional hurdle of WB and Universal having to collaborate in order for vault material to be released? I'm trying to understand if the potential exists for both music labels to release super deluxes, or who exactly gets to decide that. Because clearly, if UMG now has all the power to decide what to do with the vault material, we might not be seeing super deluxe editions of Parade, Batman, GB and PR for a long, long time. |

D&P was also my best guess for the next one, it was so successful worldwide, had a huge global tour, lots of big singles and videos, and targets a slightly younger audience too perhaps. Great news if true, it's a fun album and a very iconic era for Prince. Not even Tony can ruin this one.
In some ways I feel like we've had a taste of the Parade era recently thanks to the SOTT SDE overlapping quite a bit with that period. So maybe best to leave that for a while, focus on a different era. |
