. Duh. Do you always kick in open doors? The world is mad and does no sane things. Look around you. .
. What other priorities are there besiddes sleep and food? . Oh yes, fly, but we'll do that. .
. That doesn't fit here. SOTT SDE is not perfect. And what I ask for is a good release. Good packaging, good selection of music, good mastering. Then it will be perfect. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

. You still did not get it. The CD fitment might be annoying. The issue is that they did not understand the issues involved in releasing a box set. That is a huge problem. .
. Exactly. They display their level of udnerstanding with this release. .
. That is what I am saying. .
. Eventually when the heirs find out they will be served. .
. Hasn't his be the case since at least the 90's? I mean, why ridicule this? .
. I doubt you can explain the truth in that. . "Badly packaged items will cause issues. Not just with me, but worldwide." . You think that only you will get this SOTT SDE box set? It is a worldwide release. So it is a worldwide problem. What can you say against that? .
. Yes, I agree. .
. You don't get it. If you are still stacking your CD's/bluerays/etc then this is not a problem. But at a certain amount of media it becomes necessary to make thinks kinda efficient. You can guess at when this became a necessity. .
. I know my priorities quite well. .
. I am not a native speaker in that language so I doubt I read it before. I explained when things would be good and that the sum of good things would make it perfect. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

I can understand the frustration at the box being so large but between the choice of
1) Making the hardback book exclusive to vinyl edition and/or making some weird shrunk down version for the CD version. 2) Making 1 set of packaging for both the vinyl and CD versions.
I think the estate made the right choice. Nobody wants to have to spend $250 on the vinyl just to get the best booklet possible.

I think the estate made the right choice. Nobody wants to have to spend $250 on the vinyl just to get the best booklet possible. Maybe, just maybe, they could have sold the book separately while making the cd box fit a cd shelf. That would have made the cd package more affordable at the same time.

But I guess they had to make some decisions, and it is what it is. I'm really excited about it regardless. How long before it leaks?

I'm completely fine with the format of the packaging. This is one of my favorite albums ever, it's arguably Prince's magnum opus, and it deserves special treatment. They're pulling out all the stops with the big-ass book, the special box, the peach-and-black CD artwork... I don't see how any true Prince fan could get so bent out of shape about this. . Someone earlier in the thread mentioned how it's better to have a full-sized book than a shrunk-down CD-sized pamphlet. I agree. I loved the "1999" set, but reading that booklet with my 54 year old eyes was torture. Especially with the color of the font clashing with the colors of the backgrounds. . And I keep my actual CDs in sleeves in binders on my shelves, and store the jewel boxes and other packaging in plastic bins. I can go grab a CD off the shelf in three seconds. So once I get the boxset, I'll retrieve the discs, and safely store the packaging. . However, instead of packing the book away, I will probably keep it out with my other Prince books. I have a feeling I'll be flipping through it many times over the next year.

With all due respect though, just because you personally subjectively don't think the packaging suits your own personal wants for CD storage doesn't mean that that "did not understand the issues". There is no issue, only a small, small number of Prince fans who are getting their knickers in a twist over a trite personal preference because the Estate apparently always needs to be looked at as messing up Prince's legacy somehow [Edited 7/29/20 14:50pm]

. Wait. We've had three SDE releases. . PR was a disaster because of the 'overseen by Prince' nut-job that they called 'remastering'; even WB did not refuse it. 1999 was generally OK but hit with censorship due to lack of understanding of theatre, fiction, contex and such. SOTT will be hampered by the chosen form factor, however beautiful. . These are facts, not just me 'personally thinking'. Also I am thinking all the time, so please do not frame it as a rare occasion. .
. If you cannot se it that does not mean it is not there. The industry standard for CD's, DVD's, BluRays and such is a five inch disk in a standard packaging which for CD's is a jewel case, a cardboard `equivalent` or very similar. Ignoring this means taking a risk. .
. See above. It is not a pfreference. History really shows otherwise.
. Now you start to generalize. Now you try to make us think that my claims are baseless, fiction and not facts. You are now complaining about the shape, not the contents. .
. Did you check the paper work that is generated in the court(s)? Did you investigate the failed UMG deal? Did you check the huge fees generated by these lawyer leaches? Did you check the lack of planning w.r.t. the heirs finally getting a payout? . I.o.w.: what things are going OK in your eyes? .
. That is simply passing the music via a decent mastering engineer that is not a Prince yes-man without teh proper experience or gear. That is the way things are supposed to be done. .
. Again: what things are going OK in your eyes? .
. Yes, that is the shape of things. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

All I see are opinions being called facts, not vice versa in that last post. All of it
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
. If you call discernable things that are (not) on the disc opinions then what are you smoking? If you cannot hear the PR 'remaster' issue then why bother buying CD's? Why not stream mp3? If you do not care about censorship, then do read all the fake news. If you do not care about decent packaging standards then add some space to the house. . Warped senses of reality abundant, you appear to possess a few. . You simply dismiss reality. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
-Just because the packing doesn't meet your personal wants/"standards" doesn't mean there is an issue objectively. "Decent packaging standards", unless you can refer me to the site where "packaging standards" are universally agreed upon by the world and criteria is in place for judgement for all to agree on, are subjective - that is not disputable. . Standards are visible in the record stores. If you call that standard personal you are besides this reality. Good for you. .

It's hardly the first argument I've witnessed that was basically about "the size of the package," though usually people at least pretend it's about something else.
For what it's worth, I'm glad I'm getting the big book, since the 1999 book was nigh unreadable. That matters more to me than consistency of storage. And as for industry standards (since Udo keeps insisting this is more than his preference)--how many people actually buy in physical stores (the only place that would matter)--and every store I've been in recently has alternate shelves specifically for nonstandard packaging. I can't take any of this circling around the packaging seriously. Some of Udo's other complaints--particularly the Purple Rain related ones--make sense, but I think the pressure decisionmakers felt to get something out relatively quickly was understandable, and accounted for some of the problems. I wish they'd gone ahead and done their own remaster (even if they still released the Paisley one alongside it--it was the artist-approved one, after all).
