I was thinking that several songs if included or excluded could mean something about a possible Parade SD.

Like if "All My Dreams" and "Others Here with Us" are on it would that mean that a Parade SD was less likely?

It's not public yet and possibly won't be before the official announcement.

AMD is a possible candidate because of DF, even though it's also a (better?) candidate for Parade Deluxe. OHWU has no business being on a SOTT Deluxe.

FWIW, I think anything with the Revolution -- save potentially earlier verisons of Strange Relationship, IGBABN, etc -- should be left off this super deluxe.

The collaborative stuff wth W&L really belongs on the Parade deluxe. I know there's so much stuff to draw from here and we want it all, but I'd much rather they focus on the stuff that came out of this era that he recorded alone or with the nascent SOTT band. Stuff like Yo Mister or Rebirth of the Flesh. This album was a very solitary piece of work, even though its earliest iterations were not.

And since we're still in the dreaming phase, I really really wish there would be a Blu-Ray Audio version with an additional 5.1 mix, like what the Beatles have been getting.

But most of all, I just want the original album to sound incredible. Whatever that takes -- brilliant remastering, even remixing -- it's time to make this genius-level album sparkle. The version on Spotify sounds awful and deserves a more enveloping presentation.

In my opinion, the most impressive thing in a reissue should be the sound of the original album. It should sound great. So while I want tons of discs to spend years of my life obsessing over, I most of all want the original album given a jaw-dropping treatment.

Why release something obscure when there isn't anything "regular"? Why immediately present a unicorn when you haven't even shown a horse?

.

Also, I doubt there are multitrack recordings of aftershows from that era.

Here's my logic on that.

We all know that the DVD will be the standard setlist from the Sign tour. Whatever show they go with. It doesn't really make much sense to release a different concert on CD that's basically the same from a different date.

This Sign Deluxe release should be all about legend building. Warner and the Estate should be pushing the narrative that this is Prince's greatest album. His most prolific period. Get the average listener outside of the Purple Rain bubble. Start schooling them on all the history behind this release, showing them a different side of Prince, training them that the aftershows were even better than the regular shows.

If they do it right, they will build a growing demand for this "obscure" stuff. Kind of similar to how everybody thought Jimi Hendrix's greatest album was Are You Experienced, now Electric Ladyland is getting the love. Haha. Or The Beach Boys again, everybody was all about the hits, then they built the legend of Pet Sounds/Smile and now the average listener is like "Oh hey, Wild Honey and Sunflower are actually great albums. We want everything from that period."

Of course, Warner and the estate could (and probably will) mess that all up but they seem to be finding a pattern for releases. Like I don't think anybody was clamering for the Detroit 2nd show but it was something they thought was great and something that wasn't circulating. So they went with it. Now that we're going into the Sign era, there's a bit more freedom. It isn't like the choice is "concert or rehearsal tapes"

You're not interested in finally seeing the six songs that were cut from the concert film?

Agree with you, but would gander that depends on whether W&L, Susan Rogers, Alan Leeds or any of the rewrite-the-script crew is involved.

absolutely, 100% "NO" on those configurations. we can make them ourselves if they just
include the missing tracks on the outtakes discs. it would be a waste of space with all of
those tracks in the vault that could be included instead of already released material. nod

That album on CD is one of those most in desparate need of a remaster... not "Turn the original one louder", but a remaster. Wish they would use someone other than the remastering engineer that ruined "Erotic City" and compressed and brickwalled "Darling Nikki" and "When Doves Cry" on the Purple Rain super deluxe re-issue though.

Damn, forgot "Adore" (Edit) 4:42 on the list of B-Sides, Edits and (Re-)Mixes. Then again this was only on The Hits 1, so perhaps it was only created for that release and thus technically not a "real" edit. And if you include it, the B-Sides, Edits and (Re-)Mixes list doesn't fit on a single CD.

You write this blog? I agree every unreleased track from every config of DF/Camille /CB should be there, however...
I'm of 2 minds about Feel U Up. I think the estate will keep it for Batman and that would be a respectable choice. Same with All My Dreams, not sure whether it should be there on with Parade.
As for Adore yeah, it was most likely edited for The Hits, this edit may of course have been done by P in 87 for some canceled promo but it's unlikely. So should it be there? I guess, and so should Power Fantastic following that logic (though the unedited version could be a nice addition). I mean better there than on the Symbol album or Come remasters. The DMSR edit was technically PR Era but they put it on 1999 so I guess retroactive mixes are included.
Truth is, if it really happens, Michael Howe certainly doesn't care about our wishlists and he'll just do what he wants to do, so I guess all we can do is wait...

I have to strongly disagree that Revolution material belongs solely to a PARADE release rather than inclusion on SOTT.

SOTT is the result of material that was mostly grown during the Revolution era and after the release of PARADE when the band was still intact. Sadly their contributions (particularly those of Wendy & Lisa) were erased on songs such as "Strange Relationship" (which you and rightfully agreed should have inclusion), but if DREAM FACTORY, an album with The Revolution had been released, 8 of SOTT's 16 tracks including the title song would have been a Prince & The Revolution release.

I respect your take. This is all of course my own wish list. They will do whatever is most commercially viable.

But if I ran the world (which I don't at all), I would probably release a whole other project called Dream Factory that had the overlapped SOTT/Parade songs alongside outtakes, likely in the final iteration Prince put together before he scrapped it. It would be wonderful for the world to imagine the Dream Factory as its own alternate universe album. The Parade Deluxe, imo, should be much more focused on the intense collaborative spirit he had, being the final Revolution album. If all this means two different releases with All My Dreams on them, so be it.

Most of all, I just want these Deluxe editions to enhance the album that is there, not to truncate or superficially touch upon whole other projects that were conceived. There's too much of a rich, sequential history here to curate which handful of songs belong on these Deluxe editions. If Prince was like Shakespare of pop music in the 80s, these are like different folios and quatros of his albums that deserve their own context. Just my two cents.

This sounds great. As much as I like the SOTT movie I consider it more a video that refers to the show than an actual impression of the REAL thing. To be able see a capture of the concert as it was, is great. The few minutes from Rotterdam that made it to television in Holland (Brandpunt was the name of the program) honestly was more interesting to me than the movie.
