Would a tastefully done animated biopic be more appealing than live action?

I’m ok with biopics in general but don’t fancy a Prince one for two reasons.

1) I would struggle to accept anyone playing Prince because his whole look and aura is so ingrained in my psyche.

2) Trepidation on it being focused on the bad stuff at the expense of the work ethic and music.

Assuming that 2) could be allayed by a production coming from the right place, I started to wonder if an animated one could work, having seen Hollyrock and tales from the tour bus, I didn’t have the aversion to it that I did seeing Prince represented by a bad actor.

Then last night I discovered the Amazon Prime show “Undone” and found the animation style mesmerising. I thought, this is how to do it. Not just Prince but all the cast could look like themselves. They’d just need a good voice actor and someone that can carry their body like Prince to model it on. Live performances could be recreated in animation but with real soundboard live audio and Prince could be accurately represented at all ages.

Obviously, to do this well, the estate would need to be heavily involved but what an opportunity for a hits packaged with a vault disc to accompany it.

Now I know that I’m gonna get slammed for even suggesting this but that’s cool. It’s just something that I’d like to see myself.

Go check out “Undone” to see what I mean.

Thoughts?

Prince is just one of those people that I can't imagine someone acting as him being something that doesn't come off as cheesy - be it live action or even someone doing a voice to an animated Prince.

I would find almost like an abstract presentation the most appropriate. Where it is various Prince songs played chronologicaly with visual animations depicting key moments throughout Prince's life, that way the music speaks for itself and the dissonance of having someone else depicting him could be avoided

That’s an interesting idea. You could maybe have some animated parts with music over it?

We kinda have one

Purple Rain, no ?

Well I know it's not a biopic.

-

I never like biopics

Queen's?

Elton John's ?

Miles D's ?

The Door's ? etc

They're all ... shite.

I hate to say it but it's something I only watch

when there's nothing else on a long flight.

Scrolling through them, can't keep up with 120 minutes of it.

You forget about them instantly when it's done.

-

Only (Good) documentaries are the best.

Hell, imagine a broadway show of his life and work.

Thàt would be a musical blasphemy.

No real hunger for a biopic here, I wouldn't mind a film focusing on a certain event rather than his whole career though. Animated is good when it's done well, you could have a whole film done in the style of the Raspberry Beret video animated bits for example...

Eventually, there will be a biopic.

MY choice is to not show Prince at all; rather, show the events from his perspective (like he was looking at the scenes). No need to use his voice or imagined thoughts. It can be really straightforward yet artful. Maybe look down at his shoes, show his arms putting on a jacket, etc. A foggy mirror view, perhaps.

But NO ONE can portray that man. He was a one-of-a-kind.

I was just listening to How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore take 2 and International Lover live Studio take and imagining how call it would be with that high quality animation. All the cute spoken bits and what not.

What about if it incorporated a small club performance?

I reckon a doco interlaced with animated dramatisations would be pretty good actually.

an animated biopic would be so much better than a biopic starring Bruno Mars trying to play Prince

I’d have it as South Park animation before that!

Prince recorded nearly every aspect of his professional life. I would much rather see a wonderful documentary style/narration crafted around existing (rarely seen) footage.

it's just kicking the can down the hallway. If it is animated, who could voice Prince? For me, it wouldn't matter if it's animation or live action, it's about the script.

Yeah but I think it would easier to find someone to somewhat effectively voice it than look anything but naff in person. At least any musical parts including rehearsal scenes would be his voice. The script is very important though.

I just couldn’t take anything seriously that expected me to watch a live action actor as Prince.

1+ nod ...I hope a Prince biopic is never made. As some others have mentioned, I'd prefer a documentary style film with a narration.

maybe a woman should play Prince, that would be more convincing to me than a male actor 🤓

I was really looking forward to the netflix docuseries but I can’t help thinking that it will never be made.

Still being worked on? Who’s directing? Can’t find any info on it.

Thought it was on hold, potentially indefinitely.

Yes a documentary would be fantastic! A proper one with bandmates from all eras being interviewed and giving a good overview of his whole life

The thing with biopics is that unlike, for example, even Rocketman with Elton, Prince isn't here to weigh in on his mindset that would be the only way to truly inform the emotional parts of his life that would be key parts of a biopic. We would end up with a "Bohemian Rhapsody" situation where creative liberties with Prince's life would be taken and I am not super interested in that

Ezra Edelman is producing. It will take time but will be worth it.

I like this idea for it. AND agree that I just don't want to see anyone trying to be him. Just does not play well in my head.
